Chapter 13 - Daniel’s Prediction

Claire read Daniel’s page alone first.
She asked everyone else to step outside the boathouse.
Even Harrison.
Especially Harrison.
Daniel’s handwriting shook slightly.
His heart condition had worsened by then.
Claire,
I am writing something I hope will never matter. Richard Cole has been assigned by Vale’s network to study Bennett family decision-making. I have no evidence he intends physical harm. This is a financial and governance scheme. But people who want control rarely describe themselves accurately.
Claire swallowed.
If Cole enters your life after I am gone, do not assume I predicted romance. I did not. I predict access. Grief creates access. Foundations create access. Trust creates access.
Claire stopped reading.
Grief creates access.
Richard had met her ten months after Daniel’s death.
At the lowest point of her adult life.
He remembered Daniel’s birthday without Claire telling him.
At the time she thought it was sensitivity.
Maybe he had read a file.
Claire forced herself onward.
Vale believes the Bennett structure can be captured without stealing ownership. He does not need Mia’s money in his name. He needs appointment power, investment discretion, and silence.
Exactly what Natalie later described.
I have copied evidence into the bracelet archive and boathouse case. I have also asked Harrison to remove Vale from the trust structure.
Then:
There is one fact I cannot resolve. Someone inside the Bennett Foundation is feeding Vale current information. It may not be Evelyn Marsh. Her access is legal-record focused. The foundation source knows Claire’s schedule, Mia’s events, donor relationships, and internal politics.
Claire went cold.
A second source.
Not Evelyn.
Still inside the foundation.
She called Harrison back.
He read the page.
“So someone here was helping them years ago.”
“And maybe still is.”
They reviewed Daniel’s photographs.
One showed Vale meeting Evelyn.
Another showed Natalie.
A third showed Richard entering Stonebridge.
Then one photograph changed everything.
A younger Richard stood outside the Bennett Foundation loading dock.
Beside him was foundation trustee Martha Pierce.
Claire stared.
“Harrison.”
“I see it.”
Martha had spent the last week demanding Claire step aside.
Maybe because she feared instability.
Or maybe because she was the hidden source Daniel never identified.
Claire did not call her.
She learned.
Instead, Espinoza requested records.
Martha’s foundation email contained little.
Her personal financial disclosures showed investments in Stonebridge funds years earlier.
Not illegal.
But relevant.
Then Leah found consulting payments from an entity controlled by Vale to an art-advisory company owned by Martha’s sister.
$620,000 over eight years.
Martha’s lawyer immediately claimed they were legitimate art-market services.
Claire waited.
The most important evidence came from Daniel’s digital recorder.
A conversation recorded at a foundation luncheon four years earlier.
Martha’s voice.
Claire trusts people emotionally. After Daniel, she’ll trust anyone who makes her feel protected.
Vale answered.
Then we wait.
Claire’s hands went cold.
Martha had predicted her vulnerability while Daniel was still alive.
Richard had been selected to exploit it after his death.
Daniel had not been paranoid.
He had been watching a plan develop around his wife.
Maya said, “This is enough for the board to investigate Martha.”
“Not enough to accuse her publicly.”
“Correct.”
Claire almost smiled.
“I’m learning.”
The board placed Martha on administrative leave pending review.
She responded immediately.
Not with denial.
With a threat.
She called Claire personally.
“You have no idea what Daniel did.”
Claire said, “Everybody keeps saying that.”
“He destroyed people.”
“Financially?”
“Professionally.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Ask Natalie why she really stayed in Vale’s organization.”
Claire frowned.
“She was blackmailed.”
“That is one version.”
“What is yours?”
Martha laughed bitterly.
“Daniel threatened to send her father to prison.”
Claire went still.
“Natalie’s father?”
“Yes.”
“Who was he?”
May you like
Martha whispered:
“The original custodian of Mia’s trust.”
