Chapter 15 - The Witness Who Chose Fear

Rosa Delgado entered the district attorney’s office through a side door.

She cried before she sat down.

Emily watched through a video link from another room because investigators did not want witnesses influencing one another.

Rosa clasped her hands.

“Mr. Mercer said I would lose everything.”

Detective Bennett asked, “What did he threaten?”

“My job. My reputation.”

“Did you steal from the Mercer home?”

“No.”

“Did he accuse you?”

“He showed me photographs of jewelry in my locker.”

Emily stared.

Rosa continued.

“It was not mine.”

“Who put it there?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why did you sign the affidavit?”

Rosa began shaking.

“He said if I told police what I heard, he would report me for felony theft and sue me.”

“Did he give you money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-five thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“He called it severance.”

“Did you understand it was in exchange for changing your statement?”

Rosa whispered, “Yes.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Detective Bennett leaned closer.

“Tell me what you actually heard outside Sophie’s room.”

Rosa closed her eyes.

“Mr. Mercer said, ‘Not the face. Emily will see it.’”

Emily stopped breathing.

“And?”

“Vanessa said, ‘Then tell me what you want me to do.’”

“And Mr. Mercer?”

Rosa opened her eyes.

“He said, ‘Make her afraid to talk.’”

That was the corroboration prosecutors had needed.

Michael’s role was no longer abstract.

He had instructed intimidation of his own daughter.

But the victory lasted less than three hours.

Nora called Emily into her office.

“The injunction hearing is tomorrow.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Emily stopped.

“The judge denied our request for an immediate temporary restraining order.”

“Why?”

“He wants an evidentiary hearing.”

“When?”

“Forty-eight hours.”

“And the sale?”

“Argent Peak scheduled the shareholder vote for tomorrow afternoon.”

Emily stared.

“They’re trying to close the governance step before the judge rules.”

“Yes.”

“Can they?”

“With the disputed proxy, they claim Michael can vote your sixty-one percent.”

“But it’s invalid.”

“We believe so.”

“Then stop saying believe!”

Nora stood.

“Because courts exist precisely for situations where two sides say opposite things with confidence.”

Emily turned away.

“How can Michael still control anything?”

“Because documents have force until challenged.”

The lesson was unbearable.

A lie on paper could move millions while truth waited for a hearing date.

That evening, Emily met Vanessa for the first time since the bedroom.

The meeting occurred legally with both attorneys present and prosecutors aware.

Vanessa wore no makeup.

She looked smaller.

Emily did not care.

Vanessa began.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily held up one hand.

“No.”

Vanessa stopped.

“You don’t get to start with the sentence you want to feel better about.”

Vanessa’s eyes reddened.

“I deserve that.”

“This isn’t about what you deserve.”

Emily leaned forward.

“Tell me exactly why you hit Sophie.”

Vanessa looked at her attorney.

He nodded.

“I found the box in Sophie’s wardrobe.”

“You went there to steal it.”

“Yes.”

“Sophie came in.”

“Yes.”

“She saw the photograph.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She picked up the burner phone.”

Emily’s chest tightened.

“Was it unlocked?”

“Yes.”

“What did she see?”

Vanessa began crying.

“What?”

“A video.”

Emily’s voice sharpened.

“What video?”

“Michael talking to me about you.”

“What did he say?”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“That we needed one incident involving Sophie.”

Emily went still.

“One incident?”

“Something that made you react violently.”

The room became silent.

“He expected me to hurt Sophie?”

“No. He wanted me to provoke an argument. Say Sophie had misbehaved. Make you furious at me while I recorded it.”

“But you hit her.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Sophie saw the video and said she was telling you.”

“So you tried to silence her.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“Twice.”

“Yes.”

“Michael watched.”

Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”

“Did he try to stop you?”

“No.”

Emily sat back.

The answer was somehow worse in person.

Vanessa reached into her attorney’s folder.

“There’s something else.”

She slid over a printed still from the video Sophie had seen.

Michael was holding the forged proxy.

Behind him stood Thomas Reed.

And beside Thomas was Victor Lang.

All three men were visible.

All three looking directly at the document.

Vanessa said, “The original video is on the backup drive.”

Nora stared.

“That puts all three together.”

Vanessa nodded.

Emily looked at her.

“Why record them?”

Vanessa answered without pride.

“Because by then I knew Michael would sacrifice anyone before he sacrificed himself.”

Emily leaned closer.

“You were right.”

May you like

Vanessa looked at her with hollow eyes.

“So were you.”
