Chapter 16 - The Offer

At 7:03 the next morning, Michael sent Emily a settlement proposal.

He wanted her to withdraw all challenges to the Argent Peak transaction.

He wanted her to acknowledge the proxy.

He wanted a mutual non-disparagement agreement.

In return, he would waive claims against her separate property and consent to Emily having sole residential custody of Sophie.

Emily read it twice.

Then a third time.

Nora watched her.

“He’s selling his daughter.”

“He would call it settlement leverage.”

“I don’t care what he calls it.”

The message attached from Michael was shorter.

Sign by noon. You keep Sophie. Fight me, and we both know what custody litigation can do to a child.

Emily stared at the words until they stopped looking like language.

Her phone rang.

Michael.

Nora shook her head.

Emily answered anyway and put it on speaker.

“You have until noon,” Michael said.

Emily’s voice was calm.

“You’re trading custody for my vote.”

“I’m ending this.”

“No. You’re pricing Sophie.”

“Stop dramatizing.”

“You always say that when the truth sounds ugly.”

Michael exhaled.

“Argent Peak closes the deal. The company survives. You keep the mansion and your daughter.”

“My company is worth more than your deal.”

“Not after the last two weeks.”

“Because you damaged it.”

“Because you couldn’t control yourself.”

There was the manipulation again.

But it no longer worked.

Emily said, “You watched Vanessa hit Sophie.”

Silence.

“And now you want me to reward you for offering not to fight for custody?”

“I’m trying to spare her.”

“You could have spared her in the bedroom.”

Michael disconnected.

At 9:00 a.m., the district attorney executed search warrants at Michael’s apartment, Thomas Reed’s home, and Victor Lang’s law office.

At 10:15, Argent Peak announced it intended to proceed with the shareholder vote.

At 11:30, Emily’s legal team still did not have an injunction.

At 11:58, Michael texted:

Last chance.

Emily deleted the message.

At noon, the offer expired.

At 12:07, Michael’s lawyer filed an emergency application accusing Emily of refusing a settlement that would “reduce emotional harm to the minor child.”

Nora threw the papers onto the table.

“He planned the optics.”

“Of course he did.”

At one, Daniel called.

“We found something in the mansion security archive.”

Emily stood.

“What?”

“The hallway video is gone.”

“We knew that.”

“But the deletion log isn’t.”

“Who deleted it?”

“Administrator request from Michael’s phone at 6:21 p.m. the night Sophie was hit.”

Emily stared.

Five minutes after her emergency call.

“He deleted it after the police were coming.”

“Yes.”

“Can you recover it?”

“Video, maybe not.”

“Maybe?”

“The local recorder overwrites image blocks.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“But audio is stored separately.”

She opened them.

“You have audio?”

“Fragments.”

“From the hallway?”

“And Sophie’s room. The microphone was part of the environmental alarm system.”

Emily’s heart hammered.

“Play it.”

“I sent it to Nora.”

Nora’s laptop chimed.

They opened the file.

Static.

Footsteps.

Vanessa’s voice.

“She saw the phone.”

Michael:

“Then take it.”

Sophie crying.

Vanessa:

“She won’t stop.”

Then Michael’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Do it before Emily gets back.”

A pause.

“No marks this time.”

Emily stopped breathing.

The audio continued.

Sophie screamed.

Then Vanessa shouted, “You said scare her!”

Michael answered, “I said keep her quiet!”

Nora covered her mouth.

But the recording was not finished.

A minute later:

Vanessa: “Reed gets the company. You get your payout. What do I get if Sophie talks?”

Michael: “You get nothing if Emily doesn’t sign.”

Vanessa: “And if she does?”

Michael: “Then I take Sophie in the divorce and Emily spends the next two years proving she isn’t crazy.”

Silence filled the room.

Emily felt no triumph.

Only horror.

Michael had not improvised cruelty.

He had planned around it.

Nora immediately forwarded the audio to prosecutors and the judge handling the corporate injunction.

At 2:40 p.m., twelve minutes before the Argent Peak shareholder meeting was scheduled to begin, the court clerk called.

Nora listened.

Then looked at Emily.

“We have a hearing.”

“When?”

“Now.”

Emily grabbed her coat.

Nora stopped her.

“This changes everything.”

Emily looked back.

“No.”

She thought of Sophie against the glass wardrobe.

Michael standing still.

Vanessa smiling because she believed silence had won.

“This proves what everything always was.”

They entered the courthouse knowing there was no settlement left to make.

No marriage left to save.

No compromise that could protect Sophie.

The final confrontation had become unavoidable.
