Chapter 10 - Claire Leaves

Claire moved into Diane's house with Ava.

Nathan hated every minute of it.

He did not stop her.

That was new.

Margaret would have called it weakness.

Edward might have called it wisdom.

Nathan simply called it consequences.

He slept alone at the hotel.

The next morning Rebecca gave him a choice.

"The board is meeting Friday."

"About Project Harbor."

"And your employment."

Nathan looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"Leonard is circulating concerns about your judgment."

"Because I exposed the transaction?"

"Because you stormed into a meeting, accused the CFO, and created what they're calling reputational instability."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"They're using my reaction against me."

"Yes."

"Like Margaret used Claire's resistance."

Rebecca looked at him.

"Be careful with that comparison."

He stopped.

She continued.

"Claire was physically restrained. You were not."

"You're right."

"Good."

She handed him a draft statement.

Nathan hated it.

Measured language.

No accusations.

No emotion.

He wanted to call Leonard a thief.

Instead he spent four hours documenting conflicts.

That night Diane called.

"Come over."

Nathan arrived expecting Claire.

Instead Diane sat alone in the kitchen.

Ava slept upstairs.

Claire was showering.

Diane placed an old cedar box on the table.

"I think this is what you're looking for."

Inside were Rose Rivers's papers.

Adoption records.

Letters.

A small hospital bracelet.

And one envelope addressed to Rose from Margaret Whitmore.

Unopened.

Nathan stared.

"She never opened it?"

Diane shook her head.

"My mother hated whoever sent it."

"Did she tell you why?"

"She said rich people had tried to buy her twice."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Twice.

First through adoption.

Then through Margaret's five-million-dollar trust.

Diane opened another folder.

Rose had hired a lawyer in her twenties to investigate her birth.

The lawyer traced Evelyn.

Rose learned Evelyn had died.

She also learned Evelyn had revoked adoption consent.

The report contained copies of court filings.

Margaret's signature appeared on an affidavit submitted during the adoption finalization.

It stated Evelyn remained willing to relinquish the child.

But Evelyn had already signed a revocation.

Nathan felt sick.

"Margaret lied to the court."

Diane looked at him.

"Your mother?"

"Yes."

"Then why are you surprised?"

The question was brutal.

Diane had always distrusted Margaret.

Nathan had always thought she was prejudiced against wealth.

Maybe she simply saw clearly.

Claire entered wearing sweatpants and stopped.

"What is that?"

Diane told her.

Claire sat slowly.

Nathan did not touch her.

She read Margaret's old affidavit.

Her eyes filled.

"She did the same thing."

Nathan nodded.

"She decided the mother didn't matter."

Claire looked toward the ceiling where Ava slept.

"That's why she said I lost the right to call Ava mine."

Nathan felt the cellar return.

Margaret had not invented that cruelty that night.

She had carried it for decades.

Claire looked at him.

"What are you going to do?"

Nathan answered immediately.

"Give this to Rebecca and Morales."

"And the company?"

"Whatever happens."

Claire studied him.

"Really?"

"Really."

The documents could reopen legal claims against the Whitmore estate.

They could invalidate old transfers.

They could expose Edward too.

Whitmore Hospitality's reputation could collapse.

Nathan no longer cared enough to bury it.

That mattered.

Claire saw it.

But trust did not return instantly.

"I want space."

He nodded.

"I'm not taking Ava from you."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Nathan looked at her.

After everything his family had done, perhaps she had a right to ask.

"Yes," he said. "And if you ever think I'm using the company to pressure you, leave again."

Claire almost smiled.

"That's a strange marriage vow."

"I've had a bad week."

She laughed despite herself.

Then Ava cried upstairs.

Both parents moved at once.

They stopped.

Looked at each other.

Claire said, "I'll get her."

Nathan sat back down.

Another small act of not controlling.

His phone vibrated.

Thomas.

A single message:

Leonard knows Diane has Rose's papers. Do not stay there tonight.

Nathan immediately stood.

Claire saw his face.

"What?"

He showed her.

Seconds later, the lights in Diane's house went out.

Not a neighborhood outage.

May you like

Only their house.

And outside, a dark SUV stopped across the street.
