Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Ledger

Daniel made it to the parking garage.

Security stopped him before he reached his car.

Nathan did not pursue him.

For once, he listened to Rebecca.

"Do not turn a financial investigation into an assault charge."

Detective Morales arrived forty minutes later.

Daniel requested a lawyer.

But he surrendered his phone voluntarily.

He also surrendered something else.

A safe-deposit key.

Nathan stared at it through the evidence bag.

"What bank?"

Daniel refused to answer.

His lawyer did not.

The key belonged to a private vault at Lakeshore Fiduciary Bank.

Police obtained a warrant after Daniel admitted the box contained corporate records connected to Edward's estate.

Inside was the ledger.

Not handwritten.

Encrypted.

Two USB drives.

Three paper account summaries.

And a letter from Edward.

Daniel,

If Margaret learns you have this, she will come for it. If Thomas learns, he may do the same. Give it only to Nathan when he finally stops protecting whichever Whitmore speaks most confidently.

Nathan read that line three times.

Claire sat beside him.

"Your grandfather knew you."

Nathan gave a tired laugh.

"Apparently."

The ledger showed more than diversion.

For seven years, money had moved from Whitmore Hospitality subsidiaries into consulting firms controlled by family-office entities.

Total: $23.7 million.

Some payments had legitimate descriptions.

Renovation advisory.

Brand licensing.

Strategic development.

But the vendors had few employees.

Money then moved into investment accounts.

Several were linked to Margaret.

Others were linked to Thomas.

Nathan stared.

"Both of them."

Rebecca nodded.

"Apparently."

Claire looked confused.

"So Margaret and Thomas were stealing together?"

"Maybe not together," Rebecca said.

The transaction dates mattered.

Margaret-linked withdrawals began seven years earlier.

Thomas-linked transfers began four years earlier.

Then Thomas's stopped abruptly.

Margaret's continued.

Daniel's lawyer requested a proffer meeting.

Daniel was scared enough to talk.

Nathan attended with Rebecca and Morales.

Daniel looked terrible.

"I didn't erase Edward's files because Margaret told me to."

Nathan said nothing.

"Thomas did."

Rebecca immediately asked, "How?"

"Thomas contacted me after Edward died. He said there were corrupt files in the audit server."

"Did you know they weren't corrupt?"

"Not at first."

"When did you learn?"

"The next day."

"And did you restore them?"

Daniel looked away.

"No."

"Why?"

"Margaret had already called."

Nathan leaned forward.

"What did she say?"

"That if I mentioned the files, she'd expose my role in Project Harbor."

Nathan felt disgust.

"You were negotiating the sale behind Edward's back."

Daniel nodded.

"Leonard told me the board authorized preliminary work."

"Did it?"

"Technically."

"Did Grandfather approve?"

"No."

Daniel's voice became smaller.

"He hated the idea."

Nathan looked at the ledger.

"Why are your fingerprints on the wine crate?"

"Because Edward showed it to me."

"When?"

"Two weeks before he died."

Nathan froze.

"Why?"

"He said the medallion would someday lead the right person to the trust papers."

Claire touched the pale-blue blanket beside Ava's stroller.

"The medallion."

Daniel nodded.

"Edward hid it in something that would stay with the baby."

"But Ava wasn't born."

"He knew Claire was pregnant."

Nathan looked at Claire.

They had told family early.

Edward had been ill but mentally sharp.

"Why the blanket?"

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Edward bought it."

Claire went still.

"What?"

Margaret had told them the blanket came from her.

A family gift.

Daniel shook his head.

"Edward chose it. He had the medallion sewn inside."

Nathan looked at Claire.

Another lie.

Small compared to millions.

Yet intimate.

Margaret had taken credit for Edward's final gift.

Daniel continued.

"He trusted Claire."

"Why?" Nathan asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"Because she challenged him."

Claire frowned.

"I barely spoke to him."

"You wrote him a letter."

Claire looked stunned.

"What letter?"

Nathan turned.

She looked embarrassed.

"Before we married."

"What did you write?"

Claire took a breath.

"Your grandfather offered me a prenuptial agreement."

Nathan knew that.

Claire had signed one.

"I wrote him because one clause would have allowed the family trust to control any inheritance left to our future children."

Nathan stared.

"You never told me."

"You were fighting with him already."

"What did you say?"

"That I would sign the prenup for myself but not surrender rights belonging to children who didn't exist."

Daniel nodded.

"Edward kept the letter."

Nathan sat back.

His grandfather had respected the person Nathan himself had repeatedly asked to tolerate Margaret.

That truth hurt.

Rebecca returned to the ledger.

"Why did Thomas receive money?"

Daniel rubbed his face.

"He discovered Margaret's diversion."

Nathan looked up.

"And then?"

"He blackmailed her."

Claire whispered, "So he's no better."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not exactly."

"What does that mean?"

"Thomas demanded money, yes."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"But he said he was recovering what Margaret had stolen from a trust meant for their sister."

Nathan frowned.

"What sister?"

Nobody had ever mentioned another Whitmore sibling.

Daniel looked surprised.

"You don't know?"

Nathan's entire body went still.

Thomas and Margaret had a sister.

Edward had another child.

And Nathan had never heard her name.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

"Her name was Evelyn."
