Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Version of Love

Police placed Diane Rivers under temporary protection.

Claire refused to tell her mother everything over the phone.

"Not until we know what's true."

Diane sensed enough to be frightened.

"What did those people do?"

Claire closed her eyes.

Nathan heard the question from across the room.

Those people.

Not our family.

Not the Whitmores.

Nathan had always assumed Claire's mother disliked Margaret because of class differences.

Now he wondered whether Diane knew more.

Margaret was formally charged with unlawful restraint and related offenses after prosecutors reviewed the cellar evidence and Claire's statement.

Her attorneys secured pretrial release with no-contact conditions.

She was prohibited from contacting Claire or Ava directly.

Within six hours, Nathan received a message through Margaret's lawyer.

Margaret requests a family meeting concerning trust administration.

Rebecca laughed when she saw it.

"Absolutely not."

Nathan wanted the meeting.

He got it through counsel at a neutral conference center.

Margaret sat across from him with two attorneys.

She looked immaculate.

No remorse.

Nathan placed Evelyn's medallion on the table.

Margaret's face changed.

"You knew what it was."

Silence.

"You knew Claire's grandmother was Evelyn's daughter."

Margaret's lawyer interrupted.

"Do not answer."

Margaret ignored him.

"I suspected."

Claire was not present.

Nathan had asked her.

She refused.

"I've spent enough time in rooms where your mother decides what my life means."

Nathan understood.

He continued alone.

"When did Grandfather find out?"

Margaret looked at the medallion.

"Three years ago."

"How?"

"Private investigator."

"Why was he investigating Claire?"

"He investigated everyone you dated."

Nathan almost laughed.

"Of course he did."

Margaret's eyes sharpened.

"Your grandfather built something enormous. He didn't leave succession to romance."

"What did he discover?"

"That Claire's grandmother was Rose."

Nathan waited.

Margaret looked away.

"Rose was Evelyn's child."

There it was.

Not DNA.

Not coincidence.

A documented family secret.

Nathan felt a strange sadness for Claire.

Her grandmother had lived and died without knowing—or publicly acknowledging—where she came from.

"Did Diane know?"

"No."

"Did Claire?"

"No."

"Why did Edward change the trust?"

Margaret's jaw tightened.

"Guilt."

"He wanted Evelyn's descendants protected."

"He wanted to punish me."

Nathan stared.

"Why would protecting Evelyn's family punish you?"

"Because he blamed me."

"For the adoption?"

Margaret's eyes flashed.

"I was twenty-five."

"You arranged it."

"I followed my father's instructions."

"Did Evelyn revoke consent?"

Margaret did not answer.

Nathan leaned forward.

"Did she?"

"Yes."

"Did you tell Edward?"

Silence.

That was enough.

Nathan felt sick.

"You knew Evelyn wanted her daughter back."

"I knew she was unstable."

"She had just given birth and lost her child."

"She was irrational."

Nathan heard Claire's voice in his memory.

She said Ava belongs to this family. Not to me.

Margaret had done it before.

Different generation.

Same justification.

Control disguised as protection.

"You did to Evelyn what you tried to do to Claire."

Margaret recoiled.

"That is not true."

"You decided a mother didn't deserve her child."

"I protected the family."

"And Evelyn died."

Her face tightened.

"You think I don't know that?"

For the first time, pain broke through.

Nathan stared at her.

"You loved her."

Margaret's eyes filled.

"She was my sister."

"Then why?"

Margaret whispered, "Because our father told me if I helped Evelyn keep the baby, he would cut all of us off."

There it was.

Money.

Again.

Inheritance weaponized into obedience.

"I was twenty-five," Margaret said. "Thomas was twenty-two. Our mother was sick. I thought I was holding the family together."

"And after Evelyn died?"

"I couldn't undo it."

"You could have found Rose."

Margaret's face twisted.

"Do you think I didn't try?"

Nathan stopped.

"What?"

"I found her when she was nineteen."

His heartbeat changed.

"What happened?"

"She refused me."

Margaret stared at the table.

"She said she had parents."

Nathan imagined a young Rose approached by an elegant stranger carrying shame and money.

"What did you do?"

"I left."

"That's it?"

"No."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I created a trust for her."

Nathan frowned.

"What trust?"

"Five million dollars."

"Did she take it?"

"No."

"Where did the money go?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Back into the family office after she died."

Nathan leaned back.

A five-million-dollar trust.

Returned.

Then diverted?

"Is that the money Thomas was 'recovering'?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Thomas convinced himself it belonged to Rose's descendants."

"Did it?"

"Morally? Maybe."

"Legally?"

Margaret's attorney said, "We are done discussing historical assets."

Nathan ignored him.

"Did Grandfather know about the five million?"

"Eventually."

"And he created the Preservation Share."

"Yes."

"Why forty-one percent?"

Margaret's face hardened.

"Because he wanted Claire's branch to have enough voting power to block me."

"You mean Evelyn's branch."

Margaret looked away.

Nathan understood.

His mother could not even say it.

Then he asked the question that mattered now.

"Who sent the threat to Claire?"

"I don't know."

"Who knew what happened in the cellar?"

"My lawyers. Thomas. You. Claire. Police."

"And whoever was already coming downstairs."

Margaret looked at him.

"Thomas told you he came alone?"

"Yes."

She smiled coldly.

"Nathan, Thomas has never done anything alone."

A chill moved through him.

"Who works with him?"

Margaret leaned back.

"Ask him who paid his debts."

"What debts?"

"Not gambling."

Her voice dropped.

"Blackmail."

Nathan stared.

"Thomas wasn't recovering Rose's money."

May you like

Margaret smiled bitterly.

"He was selling silence."
