Chapter 16 - The Signature That Could Ruin Him

The guarantee was for seventy-five million dollars.

It purported to make Nathan personally liable for certain Whitmore Hospitality debt if Project Harbor failed.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

Not electronic.

Handwritten.

Claire stared.

"That's yours."

Nathan felt sick.

"It looks like mine."

Rebecca asked, "Did you sign it?"

"No."

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

"Think."

Nathan thought.

Then remembered a stack of closing documents from eighteen months earlier.

Daniel had brought them to his house during Ava's pregnancy.

Nathan had signed dozens of pages.

Claire had complained.

"You don't even read those."

Nathan had replied, "Daniel does."

The memory hurt.

"I might have signed a signature page."

Rebecca's expression sharpened.

"Blank?"

"Not blank. But separated from the final document."

Marcus cursed softly.

Nathan's negligence had created another weapon.

"If authentic," Rebecca said, "you could face catastrophic exposure."

"Can Adrian enforce it?"

"We fight."

"Meaning?"

"Years."

Claire looked at Nathan.

This was the serious setback.

Even if Project Harbor died, Nathan could personally lose enormous wealth.

His attorneys advised settlement.

Meridian Crown offered one immediately.

Approve sale of the Grand.

Withdraw Evelyn-related claims.

Support trust release.

In exchange, Adrian would waive the personal guarantee and debt-default claims.

It was blackmail disguised as settlement.

Nathan received the term sheet at nine in the morning.

By noon Margaret's attorney called.

"Take it."

Nathan laughed.

"You've changed your tune."

"You can lose everything."

"I won't lose Claire."

Margaret went quiet.

Nathan continued.

"I won't sign away Ava's rights."

"You could lose your houses."

"Fine."

"Your shares."

"Fine."

"Your company."

"It's not mine."

Silence.

Margaret finally said, "Your father would never have said that."

Nathan looked out the window.

"That's the point."

The board meeting was scheduled for the next day.

Meridian Crown demanded a final answer.

Susan warned Nathan that directors might approve the settlement without him if liquidity risk became severe.

The independent trustee controlling Ava's governance rights would still need to consent to the release.

Rebecca believed the trustee would refuse.

Adrian knew that too.

So he filed an emergency court petition seeking authority to override the trust veto on grounds of corporate necessity.

The hearing was set for the same afternoon as the board meeting.

Everything converged.

Company.

Trust.

Forgery.

Debt.

Evelyn.

Ava.

Nathan could no longer solve one problem without confronting all of them.

At 11:30 that night, he sat beside Ava's crib.

Claire entered.

"You should sleep."

"Can't."

She sat beside him.

"What are you afraid of?"

He almost said losing the company.

That wasn't true anymore.

"Losing you again."

Claire looked at him.

"I didn't leave because you lost."

"I know."

"I left because you kept making every problem yours to control."

"I know."

"And tomorrow?"

Nathan looked toward their daughter.

"Tomorrow I tell the truth even if it destroys my leverage."

Claire took his hand.

That was the first time she had done it willingly since the cellar.

"You understand I still don't trust your instincts around your mother."

"Neither do I."

Claire almost smiled.

Nathan continued.

"And I don't trust my instincts around the company either."

"Better."

His phone buzzed.

Detective Morales.

They had completed forensic analysis of the seventy-five-million-dollar guarantee.

Nathan answered.

"Tell me."

Morales said, "Your signature is genuine."

His stomach dropped.

Claire watched his face.

"But the document isn't."

Nathan froze.

"What?"

"The signature page was scanned from another agreement you legitimately signed. Paper fibers, printer pattern, and document metadata don't match."

Nathan stood.

"Who created it?"

"We traced the PDF."

Silence.

Then Morales said:

"Adrian Cole's office."

Nathan closed his eyes.

There it was.

The final forged weapon.

Morales continued.

"And federal agents are executing a search warrant tomorrow morning."

"When?"

"Before your hearing."

Nathan looked at Claire.

Adrian believed tomorrow would force Nathan to surrender.

May you like

Instead tomorrow would expose everything.

The confrontation was no longer avoidable.
