Chapter 6 - The Daughter Erased from the Family

Bianca—Nathan's grandmother—had been dead for twelve years.

Edward had rarely discussed his marriage.

Nathan had always believed Margaret and Thomas were his only children.

The truth was hidden in old county records.

Evelyn Rose Whitmore.

Born between Margaret and Thomas.

Died at twenty-nine.

Nathan found the death certificate himself.

Cause: complications following childbirth.

Child's name: blank.

Claire stared at the record.

"She had a baby."

Nathan looked at Rebecca.

"Why isn't the child listed?"

"Could have been stillborn. Could have been private adoption. Could be incomplete records."

Thomas knew.

He agreed to meet them with his lawyer present.

Nathan placed Evelyn's death certificate on the table.

"Tell me."

Thomas looked tired.

"Your mother will hate me for this."

"That has stopped mattering."

Thomas looked at Claire.

"Evelyn was our sister."

"What happened to her baby?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"She lived."

Nathan went still.

"Who?"

"A girl."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

Thomas explained.

Evelyn had become pregnant by a married man.

Edward considered it a scandal.

Margaret was twenty-five then and already working in the family office.

She helped arrange a private adoption.

Evelyn regretted it almost immediately.

She demanded her child back.

Edward refused to help.

Evelyn spiraled into depression and physical illness after complications from delivery.

She died five months later.

Claire looked horrified.

"And Grandfather just erased her?"

Thomas's voice broke.

"Yes."

Nathan stared.

"Why did you blackmail Margaret?"

"Because years later I found documents showing the adoption was never properly finalized."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Explain."

"Consent paperwork was defective. Evelyn had revoked consent before finalization."

Claire whispered, "Then the adoption may have been challenged."

"At the time, yes."

"Where was the child?"

Thomas shook his head.

"Margaret wouldn't tell me."

Nathan felt the room closing.

"What does this have to do with Ava?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Everything."

Edward spent his final years trying to repair what he had done.

He modified the Whitmore Family Heritage Trust.

The Preservation Share was not merely designed for Nathan's future child.

It was designed to protect any descendant outside Margaret's control.

Nathan frowned.

"Any descendant?"

Thomas nodded.

"If Evelyn's daughter or her descendants were ever found, they had a claim too."

Rebecca's expression sharpened.

"That could dilute Ava's forty-one percent."

"Yes."

Nathan suddenly understood Margaret's fear.

If Evelyn's line resurfaced, Margaret could lose not merely Project Harbor.

She could lose a large portion of family control.

Claire asked, "Did Edward find Evelyn's daughter?"

Thomas hesitated.

"I think so."

Nathan leaned forward.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Thomas."

"I swear."

"What did he tell you?"

"Only that she'd been closer to the family than any of us realized."

Silence.

Claire frowned.

"Closer?"

Thomas nodded.

"He said Margaret would recognize the truth if she ever saw the seal."

The silver medallion.

Nathan pulled it from his pocket.

Thomas stared at it.

"That's not merely Grandfather's seal."

"What is it?"

"It belonged to Evelyn."

Nathan looked down.

The crest showed the Whitmore "W" beneath a small rose.

He had assumed the rose was decoration.

Thomas touched the air above it.

"Edward gave each child a variation. Margaret's had ivy. Mine had an oak leaf. Evelyn's had a rose."

Claire whispered, "Then he hid Evelyn's medallion in Ava's blanket."

Nathan looked at her.

Why?

Ava began fussing in her stroller.

Claire lifted her.

Thomas watched them.

Then his expression changed.

Not recognition exactly.

Something closer to fear.

Nathan noticed.

"What?"

Thomas shook his head.

"Nothing."

"You've done enough hiding."

Thomas looked at Claire.

"What's your mother's maiden name?"

Claire frowned.

"Rivers."

"Her mother's?"

Claire's face changed.

Nathan turned.

"What?"

"My grandmother was adopted."

Nobody spoke.

Thomas slowly sat back.

"What was her first name?"

"Rose."

Nathan stared at Claire.

She stared back.

"No."

Rebecca immediately said, "We are not jumping to conclusions."

Claire whispered, "My grandmother was Rose Rivers. She never knew her biological family."

Thomas looked stunned.

"Evelyn's daughter was named Rose."

The room went silent.

Nathan felt something dangerous building.

A DNA twist would be cheap without records.

Rebecca clearly thought the same.

"We verify documents first. Adoption records. Probate files. Birth records. No assumptions."

Thomas nodded.

Claire looked at Ava.

"If it's true..."

Nathan understood.

Claire could be Evelyn's granddaughter.

Ava could descend from both Nathan and Evelyn's line.

That would explain Edward's extraordinary trust design.

Not because of coincidence.

Because he had discovered who Claire was before Nathan married her.

Nathan remembered Edward's hostility toward the wedding.

Then his sudden change months later.

He had assumed Claire won him over.

Maybe Edward had recognized the history he buried.

Nathan stood.

"I need Margaret."

Thomas shook his head.

"She'll deny it."

"Then I'll make her deny it on record."

Before he could call Morales, Claire's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Claire opened it.

Her mother, Diane Rivers, stood outside her suburban home.

Someone had taken the picture less than an hour earlier.

Below it:

STOP ASKING ABOUT EVELYN OR YOUR MOTHER LEARNS WHAT THE WHITMORES DO TO WOMEN WHO WON'T SIGN.

Claire's face drained.

Nathan read the message.

The cellar had not been about history.

The person threatening them was active.

And they knew exactly what Margaret had done to Claire.
