Chapter 10 - The Edited Truth

The video looked real.

That was the terrifying part.

Maria appeared in a hallway.

Lily struggled.

Maria grabbed her shoulders.

A closet door opened.

Lily disappeared inside.

The clip ended.

Victoria’s attorney claimed the recording proved Daniel had wrongly blamed Victoria while protecting a longtime employee.

Maria watched once.

Then shook her head.

“I remember that day.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?”

“Lily was hiding.”

“From Victoria?”

“Yes.”

Maria pointed at the screen.

“The linen closet has another door inside the laundry room. Lily entered from there. I found her. I was pulling her out, not putting her in.”

“Can we prove it?”

Maria looked at Daniel.

“The laundry camera.”

They searched the archive.

Missing.

Of course.

Rachel requested raw files from the estate’s cloud-security vendor rather than the local system.

The vendor preserved automatic backups for ninety days before overwriting.

The incident was eighty-six days old.

Four days from disappearance.

The raw footage arrived hours later.

It showed everything.

Victoria shouting at Lily downstairs.

Lily running into the laundry room.

Maria finding her inside the closet.

Maria kneeling, comforting her, then guiding her out through the hallway.

The clip Victoria submitted had reversed part of the sequence and removed context.

Daniel stared at the editing report.

“She manufactured child abuse evidence against Maria.”

Bennett nodded.

“And that makes me very interested in everything else she has submitted.”

Victoria was arrested the following morning.

She surrendered through counsel.

No handcuffed spectacle.

No shouting reporters.

Just a woman in an expensive beige coat entering a courthouse with three attorneys.

She posted bond the same day.

Conditions barred her from contacting Lily or entering the estate without permission.

When reporters surrounded her, she said only:

“I love my family, and the truth will come out.”

Daniel watched from the estate.

Lily was drawing beside him.

“What’s she saying?”

“Nothing you need to hear.”

Lily looked up.

“Is that another secret?”

Daniel stopped.

Then he turned off the television.

“No.”

He explained in simple words.

Victoria had been arrested.

She would have lawyers.

A court would decide what happened.

Lily listened carefully.

“Can she come back?”

“Not now.”

“Never?”

Daniel refused to promise what he did not control.

“I will do everything legally possible to keep you safe.”

Lily seemed dissatisfied.

But she nodded.

Later, Elena found Daniel alone.

“You answered her honestly.”

“I’m trying.”

“That’s new.”

He looked at her.

She almost smiled.

Almost.

Rachel’s forensic team found another important discrepancy.

The electronic messages that had supposedly shown Elena planning to flee with Thomas had been exported from Daniel’s old phone.

But the message database contained no originals.

Only screenshots.

The screenshots had metadata showing they were created on Victoria’s company laptop.

Elena sat down.

“All those years.”

Daniel looked sick.

“I destroyed our marriage over screenshots.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“We destroyed our marriage over distrust. The screenshots were tools.”

He nodded.

It hurt.

But he nodded.

Then Rachel uncovered something worse.

Victoria had not only fabricated evidence against Elena and Maria.

She had been building a file on Lily.

School reports documenting “emotional instability.”

Private therapist notes.

Photographs of tantrums.

Emails from Victoria describing aggression that Lily’s teachers did not corroborate.

Rebecca recognized the strategy.

“She was creating a paper trail.”

“For what?” Daniel asked.

“To support removing Lily from the home. Boarding school, therapeutic placement, perhaps eventually arguing Daniel should not act alone as trustee because of family instability.”

Elena whispered, “She wanted Lily out of the way.”

Daniel walked to the window.

The oak tree stood motionless.

Behind him, Rachel opened one more recovered email.

Victoria to Grant.

Once the girl is placed, D will sign anything to get peace back.

Grant responded:

And Elena?

Victoria:

She already learned peace has a price.

Daniel’s rage became quieter now.

More dangerous.

Not violence.

Precision.

“Send everything to Rebecca.”

Rachel nodded.

“And Bennett?”

“Everything.”

Elena watched him.

“What are you planning?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The shareholder meeting.”

“You’re still going?”

“I’m a shareholder.”

“Grant suspended you.”

“He didn’t suspend my ownership.”

Elena understood.

Daniel continued.

“For years they won because we reacted separately. You hid. I attacked. Maria stayed silent. Lily was frightened.”

He looked at the recovered files.

“They knew exactly how each of us would behave.”

“So?”

“So we stop behaving predictably.”

His phone rang.

Carter Wren.

Daniel answered.

“Daniel, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Grant just sent Sterling Vale a revised voting certificate.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Carter continued.

“It claims Mercer Development already has commitments representing fifty-eight percent of shares.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so.”

“Whose votes?”

Carter sent the document.

Daniel opened it.

His own shares were listed as committed.

So were Lily’s trust shares.

His signature appeared on both.

Daniel stared.

“I never signed this.”

Elena leaned over.

At the bottom was a notarization.

The notary was someone Daniel knew.

Someone who had worked at the estate for years.

Maria looked at the name and whispered:

“Oh, God.”

Daniel turned.

“Who is she?”

May you like

Maria’s face went pale.

“Victoria’s mother.”
