Chapter 12 - The First Mercer Secret

Daniel’s father, Richard Mercer, had died eight years earlier.

He had built Mercer Development from a regional construction company into a national real-estate empire.

Daniel remembered him as demanding, charismatic, and impossible to challenge.

The photograph showed Richard at the estate twenty-two years ago.

Victoria was around sixteen.

Beside her stood Pauline Kane.

Daniel had no memory of either woman.

Maria did.

She stared at the photograph for a long time.

“Pauline worked here.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“Only for one summer. In the household office.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I didn’t recognize Mrs. Victoria when she joined your company. She was a child then.”

Elena studied Maria.

“What happened?”

Maria looked uncomfortable.

“Your father dismissed Pauline.”

“Why?”

“I never knew.”

Thomas Vale did.

His old investigation files contained a reference Daniel had never seen.

Pauline Kane had worked as Richard’s administrative assistant during a contested land acquisition.

Afterward she sued Mercer Development privately for unpaid compensation and wrongful termination.

The case settled under confidentiality.

Rachel found public docket references but not sealed terms.

Rebecca obtained consent from the company to review old archived legal files through independent counsel.

The answer arrived the next day.

Pauline had accused Richard Mercer of promising her a one-percent carried interest in a major development project.

Richard denied it.

The dispute settled for $180,000.

Daniel frowned.

“That’s it?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No. There’s more.”

During the dispute, Pauline alleged Richard used her as an intermediary for questionable cash payments to a local land consultant.

No criminal case followed.

But internal notes showed Richard had quietly reimbursed the company.

Daniel stared.

“My father?”

Elena said nothing.

Daniel suddenly understood another piece.

Victoria had grown up believing the Mercer family had humiliated her mother.

The financial scheme had not begun only as greed.

It began as revenge.

Rachel found an old email Victoria wrote to Grant years before joining Mercer Development.

My mother cleaned up Richard Mercer’s mess and got thrown away. His son lives in that mansion like none of it happened.

Grant replied:

Then make the son pay retail.

Daniel read the sentence repeatedly.

Victoria had targeted him before she met him.

Elena leaned against the desk.

“That explains the hatred.”

“Not Lily.”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the garden.

“She punished my daughter for something my father did before Lily was born.”

Elena’s voice was cold.

“People who build their lives around revenge eventually need everyone else to remain guilty.”

The email chain deepened.

Grant and Victoria began with vendor fraud.

At first, the amounts were smaller.

Then they discovered how little oversight Grant faced.

Alder Crest grew.

Victoria entered Mercer Development.

She studied Daniel and Elena’s marriage.

She fed Daniel concerns about Elena.

She fed Elena fears about Daniel.

Then the theft became millions.

The marriage collapsed.

Victoria married Daniel two years later.

But one question remained.

Why Grant?

Rachel answered it.

Grant’s father had been a minority contractor ruined during Richard Mercer’s aggressive expansion.

Grant had grown up with his own grievance.

Two angry children had become wealthy adults capable of revenge.

And then revenge became business.

Daniel looked at the records.

“They told themselves this was justice.”

Elena nodded.

“Until stealing six million felt justified.”

“Then twelve.”

“Then the company.”

“Then Lily.”

Silence.

The shareholder vote was six days away.

Sterling Vale continued pretending negotiations remained normal.

Grant did not know Carter was cooperating.

Victoria remained free on bond but barred from Lily.

Pauline Kane disappeared from her Connecticut address.

Bennett obtained records showing she had flown to Florida.

Law enforcement knew where she was.

Then a new attack landed.

An anonymous package reached several Mercer shareholders.

Inside were copies of Daniel’s divorce affidavit, the Ridgeline agreement bearing his real signature, and photographs of him drinking at industry events.

A letter warned:

Daniel Mercer has concealed his own financial misconduct while using a family crisis to seize control of the company.

Two elderly family shareholders called Daniel demanding answers.

One threatened to vote for Grant.

The evidence against Daniel was misleading.

But not entirely false.

He had signed carelessly.

He had sworn damaging statements against Elena.

He had been drinking heavily during the months after his father died.

His weaknesses were real.

Victoria’s genius had always been attaching lies to truths.

That night, Daniel found Lily beneath the oak tree.

He panicked.

“Lily.”

She turned.

“I’m okay.”

He hurried to her.

“You shouldn’t be out here alone.”

“I wanted to see it.”

“The tree?”

She nodded.

Daniel sat beside her.

“Do you want it cut down?”

Lily looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because bad things happened here.”

She touched the rough bark.

“The tree didn’t do them.”

Daniel stared at her.

No.

It had not.

Lily looked upward at the security camera.

“Can we keep the camera?”

“You want it?”

“It told the truth.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“We keep it.”

She looked at him.

“Dad?”

“What?”

“Mom said Grandpa did something bad.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then nodded.

“It looks like he did.”

“Was he bad?”

Daniel remembered what he had told her.

People were not simple.

Neither were families.

“He did something wrong. Maybe more than one thing.”

Lily considered that.

“Then we don’t have to pretend because he died.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No.”

They did not.

His phone rang.

Rebecca.

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, Grant has petitioned the Delaware Court of Chancery for expedited relief validating the merger voting commitments.”

“What?”

“He’s trying to get a ruling before shareholders meet.”

“Using the forged proxy?”

“Yes.”

“Then we challenge it.”

“We are.”

She paused.

“But he attached something else.”

“What?”

“A declaration from Victoria.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Rebecca continued.

“She claims Elena offered to withdraw her fraud allegations three years ago in exchange for ten million dollars.”

Elena was standing behind him now.

She heard.

Her face changed.

Daniel asked, “Is it false?”

Elena did not answer.

May you like

And Daniel knew immediately.

Not completely.
