Chapter 9 - Inside the Oak

They waited until morning.

Detective Bennett insisted on being present.

So did Elena.

Daniel did not argue.

Three years earlier, after one of Victoria’s threats, Elena had hidden a second digital recorder inside a narrow cavity where an old lightning scar split the oak trunk.

“I planned to come back the next day,” Elena said.

“But Victoria caught you.”

“Yes.”

The cavity was still there.

So was a small waterproof pouch.

Daniel pulled it free.

Inside lay a recorder and a folded piece of paper.

The paper had deteriorated at the edges, but the writing remained legible.

Elena recognized it.

“I didn’t put this here.”

Daniel unfolded it.

There were numbers.

Dates.

Initials.

GK — 60

VLK — 40

R — SIGN

E — OUT

D — CONTROL

L — TRUST

Rachel stared.

“That looks like a plan.”

Daniel pointed to R.

“Ridgeline?”

“Possibly.”

Elena looked at the last line.

“Lily.”

No one spoke.

The recorder still powered on.

Its final audio file was dated the night after Elena’s last secret visit.

That made no sense.

Elena had already left.

Bennett pressed play.

Footsteps.

Wind.

Then Grant’s voice.

“She came back.”

Victoria answered.

“I handled it.”

“How?”

“You don’t need to know.”

“Victoria.”

“I said I handled it.”

Grant sounded angry.

“If Elena talks, Alder Crest is finished.”

“She won’t.”

“How can you guarantee that?”

A pause.

Then Victoria said, “Because Daniel signed the affidavit, and she finally understands he will always choose whoever makes him feel least guilty.”

Daniel lowered his head.

The recording continued.

Grant said, “What about the child?”

“She’s four.”

“She saw Elena.”

“She’ll forget.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Children can be taught which memories cause pain.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel stopped the audio.

He could not bear another second.

Lily had not been punished randomly.

Victoria had been conditioning her for years.

Questions about Elena brought fear.

Memories brought punishment.

Silence brought relief.

Daniel walked away from the tree.

He made it to the stone wall before punching it.

Pain shot through his hand.

Elena grabbed his wrist.

“Stop.”

“I let her into Lily’s life.”

“Breaking your hand doesn’t help Lily.”

“She lived in my house.”

“Yes.”

“She slept beside me.”

Elena’s expression was hard.

“And you still think this is about how betrayed you feel.”

Daniel stared.

Then he understood.

He looked toward the mansion.

Lily stood at an upstairs window with Maria.

Small.

Watching.

Daniel lowered his hand.

“You’re right.”

Elena released him.

They played the remaining recording inside.

Grant and Victoria discussed money, but one name appeared repeatedly.

Sterling Vale.

Sterling Vale Capital was the private-equity group seeking to acquire Mercer Development.

Grant called someone named “Carter.”

“Carter wants the shareholder package clean.”

Victoria replied, “He’ll get it once Daniel is boxed in.”

Daniel knew Carter Wren, Sterling Vale’s managing partner.

He had negotiated directly with him.

Had Carter been part of the fraud?

Rachel cautioned them.

“Don’t assume.”

Daniel had learned the cost of assumptions.

Instead, Rebecca contacted Sterling Vale’s outside counsel privately.

The response came that evening.

Carter Wren requested a meeting.

He arrived at Rebecca’s Manhattan office visibly furious.

“I did not know about Alder Crest,” he said.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Did you know Grant would receive twelve million?”

“Yes. Change-of-control compensation was disclosed.”

“Victoria’s eight million?”

Carter stopped.

“What eight million?”

Elena slid the agreement across.

Carter read it.

His face darkened.

“This is not our agreement.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“What’s different?”

“Our deal pays no consulting fee to VLK or anything related to Victoria Mercer.”

“So this is forged?”

“Partially. Someone modified a legitimate draft.”

Daniel sat back.

Grant and Victoria were not merely profiting from the merger.

They were secretly diverting additional money from the sale.

Carter continued.

“If this is authentic, I will suspend negotiations.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Everyone looked at him.

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“What are you doing?”

“Grant thinks he’s winning.”

“That is not a reason to let a transaction continue.”

“No. But if Carter publicly walks now, Grant starts destroying whatever we haven’t found.”

Rachel nodded slowly.

Daniel continued.

“Let him believe the vote is still happening.”

Elena stared at him.

Three years earlier, Daniel would have charged forward.

Now he was learning to wait.

Carter agreed to cooperate through counsel.

The shareholder meeting remained scheduled.

For the first time, Daniel had an ally Grant did not know about.

Then Detective Bennett called.

The forensic interviewer had completed Lily’s formal interview.

There was enough evidence for police to seek an arrest warrant against Victoria for offenses related to child endangerment and assault.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“When?”

“Possibly tomorrow.”

Bennett paused.

“But there’s another issue.”

“What?”

“Victoria’s attorney just delivered materials claiming Maria abused Lily.”

Daniel stood.

“That’s insane.”

“I think so too. But there’s video.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Bennett continued.

“It appears to show Maria grabbing Lily and forcing her into a closet.”

Daniel looked at Maria across the room.

Maria’s face drained.

“That never happened.”

May you like

Bennett said quietly:

“Then someone has been editing more than bank records.”
