Chapter 4 - The Woman Daniel Blamed

Daniel did not tell Lily he was meeting her mother.
That became his second mistake in twenty-four hours.
He told himself he was protecting her.
He told himself he needed facts first.
But as he drove toward Stamford after sunset, he knew the truth.
He was afraid.
Afraid Elena would prove Victoria had destroyed their family.
More afraid she would prove Daniel had helped.
The meeting place was a quiet apartment above a closed bookstore.
Daniel climbed the stairs and knocked.
Elena opened the door.
For several seconds neither spoke.
She was thirty-nine now.
Her dark hair was shorter. There were lines beside her eyes Daniel didn’t remember.
But she was Elena.
Alive.
Real.
Standing six feet away.
Daniel’s first emotion was anger.
His second was grief.
“You left her.”
Elena flinched.
“Come inside.”
“You left Lily.”
“I know.”
“She was four.”
“I know how old my daughter was.”
“Then why?”
Elena closed the door.
“Because I was a coward.”
Daniel had expected excuses.
That answer stopped him.
She continued.
“And because Victoria and Grant made sure every choice looked worse than leaving.”
Daniel placed the ledger copy on the table.
“Start talking.”
Elena sat but he remained standing.
“Four years ago I noticed duplicate vendor payments. Construction consulting contracts, environmental reviews, land-option fees. Small enough individually to disappear inside projects worth hundreds of millions.”
“Alder Crest.”
“That was one company. There were five.”
“And you think Grant controlled them?”
“I know he did.”
“Proof?”
“I had proof.”
“Had?”
“Victoria found out.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Victoria worked investor relations.”
“She also had access to your calendar, your devices, your office, and Grant.”
“What does that mean?”
Elena looked at him.
“They were sleeping together.”
Daniel laughed involuntarily.
“No.”
“I saw them.”
“When?”
“Before you and I separated.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You accused me of an affair.”
“Because you were photographed meeting Thomas Vale.”
“Thomas was helping me trace the vendor network.”
Daniel remembered the pictures.
Elena entering a hotel lounge with Thomas Vale, a corporate investigator.
Victoria had brought them to Daniel personally.
“She told me—”
“I know what she told you.”
Elena’s bitterness sharpened.
“She told you everything.”
Daniel looked away.
“What happened after you found Alder Crest?”
“I copied records. Grant discovered the access. Two days later, company money moved using my credentials.”
“Your electronic approvals.”
“They weren’t mine.”
“IT verified them.”
“Grant supervised the forensic review.”
Daniel went still.
Elena leaned forward.
“Then Victoria came to me beneath the oak tree.”
“The recording.”
“You found it?”
“Part.”
“What did you hear?”
“She threatened you about Lily’s trust.”
Elena’s face changed.
“She said if I exposed Grant, they would make the fraud look like mine. She showed me draft criminal referrals, bank records, messages supposedly between me and Thomas.”
“Why didn’t you go to police?”
“I tried to go to outside counsel.”
“And?”
“She had something else.”
Elena stood and walked to the window.
“Your signature.”
Daniel felt cold.
“On what?”
“A certification to First Continental Bank.”
He remembered.
A financing certificate for Mercer Tower.
“I signed dozens.”
“This one stated that certain project funds had not been diverted to related-party entities.”
“They hadn’t.”
“They had. Grant moved them.”
“Then Grant committed fraud.”
“Yes. But the certification carried your signature. Victoria told me if I exposed them, Grant would produce records making it look as if you knew.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You believed her?”
“She had internal emails.”
“Forged?”
“I didn’t know.”
“So you sacrificed your marriage?”
“No.”
Elena turned.
“I sacrificed you first. Then Lily.”
Her eyes filled.
“And I have hated myself for the second one every day.”
Daniel’s anger returned.
“You could have told me.”
“I did tell you Grant was stealing.”
“You also lied about meeting Thomas.”
“Because Thomas said if Grant knew we were investigating, he would destroy the evidence.”
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“So you kept secrets and expected blind trust.”
“Yes.”
“That’s not how marriage works.”
“I know.”
The truth landed between them.
Neither had been innocent.
Daniel had distrusted.
Elena had concealed.
Victoria had exploited both.
Daniel finally sat.
“Why did you disappear?”
“After the divorce mediation, Victoria came again. She said Grant was prepared to make a federal criminal referral unless I signed the settlement and stopped fighting for primary custody.”
Daniel’s face drained.
“You agreed.”
“I thought you were safe. I thought Lily was safe with you.”
“You had supervised visitation available.”
“For two months.”
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“I canceled those visits because you stopped appearing.”
“I appeared.”
“No.”
“Daniel, I came to the visitation center four times.”
He stared.
“You weren’t there.”
“I was told you canceled.”
“By whom?”
Elena’s answer came quietly.
“Victoria.”
Daniel stood.
“She wasn’t Lily’s guardian.”
“She was becoming yours.”
He paced.
“Why the secret visits?”
“I learned Victoria was screening mail and changing staff access. Maria helped me enter through the garden twice.”
“Lily saw you?”
“Once.”
Daniel thought of Lily saying Victoria told her Mom never came back.
“What happened?”
“I told Lily I loved her. I promised I was trying to fix things.”
“And then?”
“Victoria caught me leaving.”
“The oak recording.”
“Yes.”
Daniel ran a hand across his face.
“Why haven’t you contacted Lily since?”
“I have.”
“What?”
Elena opened a drawer.
Inside were returned envelopes.
Birthday cards.
Letters.
All addressed to Lily.
Several were marked undeliverable.
Daniel picked one up.
The address was correct.
Someone had redirected them.
Elena watched him.
“I sent twenty-seven.”
Daniel’s hands began to shake.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Maria.
Come home. Someone tried to enter Lily’s room through the balcony. Police are here.
Daniel looked at Elena.
She read his expression.
“What happened?”
He showed her.
Elena grabbed her coat.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“That’s my daughter.”
“She doesn’t know I found you.”
Elena stared.
“You didn’t tell her?”
Daniel looked away.
Elena’s voice broke with fury.
“After everything Victoria did to control what Lily knows, you decided to control it too?”
Daniel had no answer.
Then another message arrived.
May you like
From Victoria.
You should have left the past buried. Now everyone loses.
