Chapter 5 - The Blue Scarf

The person at Lily’s balcony never got inside.
A motion sensor had activated the lights, and Maria had called police after seeing a figure retreat across the lawn.
No one was caught.
But footprints remained in the wet soil.
Daniel returned with Elena in a second car.
Lily was sitting in the library with a detective.
When she saw Daniel, she jumped down.
“Dad!”
Then Elena entered.
Lily stopped.
Every adult in the room became silent.
Elena did not move closer.
“Hi, Lily.”
The child stared.
Her lower lip trembled.
“Mom?”
Elena nodded.
Lily looked at Daniel first.
That hurt him.
“Is she really Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she was coming?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I met her tonight.”
Lily’s eyes changed.
“You found her and didn’t tell me?”
There was no accusation louder than that quiet question.
“I was going to explain.”
Victoria had said similar things.
Lily turned away from him.
Elena crouched.
“You don’t have to hug me.”
Lily looked at her.
“Did you leave me?”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I left the house.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Elena answered anyway.
“Yes. I left you.”
Lily’s shoulders shook.
“Why?”
“Because I was scared and I made a terrible decision. I thought I was protecting you. I was wrong.”
Lily started crying.
Elena did too.
Then Lily crossed the room and hit her mother once in the chest with both small fists.
“You were supposed to come back!”
“I know.”
“You promised!”
“I know.”
Lily hit her again.
Elena let her.
Then Lily collapsed into her arms.
Daniel turned away.
Maria was crying silently.
Later, after Lily fell asleep beside Elena in the guest room, Daniel met Maria in the kitchen.
“What happened before the balcony?”
Maria hesitated.
“Lily was looking for something.”
“What?”
“The blue scarf.”
Daniel remembered Victoria’s closet.
Police had already restricted access to Victoria’s belongings pending her retrieval through counsel, but Daniel called Detective Nora Bennett and explained.
Bennett arrived before midnight.
With Daniel, Elena, and Maria present, police opened the dressing-room closet.
The blue box remained on the upper shelf.
Inside was Elena’s scarf.
Elena lifted it carefully.
“This disappeared from my office the week before our separation.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why would Victoria keep it?”
Elena turned it over.
One corner had been cut and resewn.
Maria noticed first.
“That stitching is new.”
Police photographed it before opening the seam.
Inside was a small encrypted USB drive.
Everyone stared.
Elena whispered, “Thomas.”
“Your investigator?”
She nodded.
“He gave me a drive exactly like this. I thought Grant took it.”
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Lily found the scarf.”
Maria understood.
“That is why Victoria punished her.”
The next morning, Daniel received another blow.
Mercer Development’s board placed him on paid administrative leave.
Grant issued a polished statement citing “temporary governance safeguards during a personal and internal compliance matter.”
Daniel read it at the breakfast table.
Elena watched him.
“You lost the CEO role?”
“Temporarily.”
“Because of me.”
“No. Because I handed Grant ammunition.”
Rachel Dunne arrived with a digital forensic specialist.
The USB required a password.
Elena tried old combinations.
Nothing.
Daniel tried dates.
Nothing.
After three failures, the drive imposed a delay.
“We shouldn’t keep guessing,” the specialist warned.
Lily sat on the stairs listening.
“What was Mr. Thomas’s dog’s name?”
Elena turned.
“What?”
“When you met him. In the picture. There was a dog.”
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“Victoria showed me pictures and said Mom loved another family more.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“What dog?”
Lily thought.
“Baxter.”
Elena looked at the specialist.
“Try BAXTER, then the date Thomas and I first met.”
It worked.
Folders appeared.
Contracts.
Bank instructions.
Vendor spreadsheets.
Audio files.
A directory named ALDER.
Daniel opened it.
A spreadsheet listed payments totaling $6.84 million.
Beside each transfer was an authorization field.
E. MERCER
But another column contained login-origin metadata.
Every approval had been created from the same device ID.
Daniel recognized it.
“That’s not Elena’s computer.”
Rachel asked, “Whose?”
Daniel looked at Elena.
Neither wanted to say it.
The device belonged to Grant.
Then a second file appeared.
A scanned agreement showing Alder Crest’s beneficial ownership.
Grant Kessler — 60%.
The remaining 40% belonged to an LLC called VLK Capital.
Rachel searched.
VLK.
Victoria Louise Kane.
Victoria’s maiden name.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“She was stealing from the company before we were even together.”
Elena shook her head.
“Keep looking.”
Rachel opened another folder.
Inside were photographs from the estate security system.
Victoria and Grant.
Meeting under the oak tree.
Kissing.
Exchanging envelopes.
Dates spanning years.
Daniel’s face hardened.
Then the forensic specialist opened the newest file.
It had been added only six weeks earlier.
A draft agreement titled:
STERLING VALE ACQUISITION — VOTING SUPPORT AND CHANGE-OF-CONTROL COMPENSATION.
Grant would receive $12 million after the merger.
Victoria would receive $8 million through a consulting entity.
Daniel whispered, “She was selling my company.”
Elena corrected him.
“Our daughter’s company too.”
Daniel looked at her.
Lily’s grandfather had placed twenty-two percent of Mercer Development’s nonpublic shares into an irrevocable trust for Lily.
The trust could not simply be taken from her.
But in a merger, those shares could be converted to cash or new securities.
And Daniel, as one of the trustees, had been encouraged for months by Victoria to approve Grant’s “strategic transaction.”
Daniel suddenly understood.
“She kept telling me the merger would secure Lily’s future.”
Elena’s expression became grim.
“No.”
She pointed to the agreement.
“It would secure Victoria’s.”
A final document sat at the bottom of the directory.
A draft petition for probate court.
Rachel read the heading.
Petition to Remove Trustee for Incapacity and Appoint Successor.
The trustee they intended to remove was Daniel.
The proposed successor was Grant Kessler.
Attached to the petition were photographs of Daniel drinking at business dinners, private medical records, and statements claiming he suffered uncontrolled rage.
The most recent exhibit had been added yesterday.
A still image from the garden.
Daniel confronting Victoria.
The moment his arm was extended toward her.
Taken out of context, it looked like he was attacking his wife.
Elena whispered, “They were preparing to take Lily’s trust away from you.”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Lily stood there.
She had heard everything.
And in her hands was a small object Daniel had never seen before.
A silver key.

“I found this with Mom’s scarf,” she said.
“Victoria told me if I ever showed anyone, she would make you disappear too.”
