Chapter 10 - The Plan

Claire contacted Nora the following morning.
Not Daniel.
That was deliberate.
She was in Philadelphia, staying with a college friend whose address she refused to disclose.
She agreed to speak over encrypted video with Nora and Officer Ruiz present.
Daniel sat across from the screen.
Claire appeared exhausted.
"I've worked for Margaret eighteen years."
"Then start with the truth," Daniel said.
Claire nodded.
"Your mother knew about Thomas's trust before he died."
"How?"
"Gerald told her."
Pike.
Again.
"What did they do?"
"After Thomas died, they used the amendment to block activation."
"Forged amendment."
"I believe so."
"You believe?"
"I never saw Gerald sign Thomas's name. But I saw him bring Margaret the amendment afterward."
Daniel kept his expression controlled.
"And the stolen money?"
Claire looked down.
"Margaret called it temporary reallocation."
"Thirty-four million dollars."
"Some went into Mercer projects. Some went to Vanessa's businesses."
"Why use my credentials?"
"Because if the trust ever activated and the records were examined, you would appear responsible."
Daniel stared at her.
"They prepared to frame me years ago?"
"Yes."
"Before Lily existed?"
"Before they knew about Lily."
The scope widened again.
Thomas had created a system to protect Daniel's future family.
Margaret had created one to preserve her control.
"When Maya became pregnant?"
Claire exhaled.
"Margaret panicked."
"Why didn't she simply challenge the trust?"
"Because litigation would expose the amendment."
"So she wanted Maya gone."
"Yes."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Five million."
Claire nodded.
"When Maya refused?"
"Margaret started talking about proving the baby wasn't yours."
"The fake DNA report."
"That came later."
"Who created it?"
"Gerald arranged it."
"Did Vanessa know?"
"Not everything."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What did Vanessa know?"
Claire hesitated.
"That Lily's existence weakened Margaret's control and threatened certain transfers."
"And what was the plan to make me think I couldn't keep Lily?"
Claire's face twisted with shame.
"After Maya died, Margaret expected you to rely on her."
"I did."
"She encouraged your travel."
Daniel remembered.
You need to get back to work, Daniel. Routine will save you. Lily has all of us.
Margaret had repeated it for months.
Claire continued.
"She wanted Lily dependent on the family household."
"Why?"
"Eventually Margaret planned to convince you that Lily needed a stable maternal guardian."
"Vanessa?"
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
"Margaret."
He stared.
"She wanted me to give her guardianship?"
"Partial guardianship. Educational and financial authority at first."
Daniel felt sick.
"If I signed?"
"Margaret believed she could argue the child trust should be controlled through Lily's guardian."
Nora spoke.
"Legally questionable."
"Gerald believed it could create enough delay to keep control while they restructured the assets."
Daniel said, "So they frightened a toddler."
Claire shook her head quickly.
"No. Margaret wanted Lily unsettled around you."
"What does that mean?"
"Tantrums after you returned. Sleep problems. Attachment issues. Things Margaret could point to and say your inconsistent presence was harming her."
Daniel's hands clenched.
"And Vanessa?"
"Vanessa went further."
"How much further?"
"I don't know."
"Don't lie."
"I truly don't."
Claire began crying.
"I heard Vanessa bragging that Lily was becoming afraid of the estate. I told Margaret."
"What did Margaret say?"
Claire looked directly at Daniel.
"She said fear would make the transition easier."
Daniel stood and walked away from the camera.
Nora continued questioning.
"Why help Maya?"
Claire wiped her face.
"Because I knew Gerald was changing documents."
"Why hide the box?"
"Maya was scared."
"Of Margaret?"
"Of Gerald."
Daniel turned back.
"Why?"
Claire hesitated.
"Because Gerald followed her."
The room went silent.
"Before the accident?"
"Yes."
"Did Margaret order it?"
"I don't know."
"Did Gerald cause the crash?"
"I don't know."
Daniel forced himself not to turn uncertainty into certainty.
"Tell Ruiz everything you know."
"I will."
Claire produced emails, calendar records and internal memos she had preserved.
Enough to trigger broader financial inquiries.
Not enough to prove a crime concerning Maya's death.
The meeting lasted two hours.
At the end, Daniel asked one final question.
"Why disappear now?"
"Margaret called me after the dinner."
"What did she say?"
Claire swallowed.
"She knew Mara had recorded Vanessa."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"And?"
"She told me to prepare documents showing you had authorized strict discipline for Lily."
Daniel stared.
"Fabricated documents?"
"Yes."
"You refused."
Claire nodded.
"Then Margaret said she'd make sure the missing trust money was traced to me."
Daniel almost laughed.
Everybody was disposable to Margaret.
Even loyal servants.
Especially loyal servants.
After the call, Nora said, "The guardianship petition is weakening."
"Good."
"But the financial case is becoming more serious."
"Also good."
"For you, perhaps. For the company, no."
Daniel looked through the window.
Mercer Development employed twelve thousand people.
His mother's crimes could damage people who had nothing to do with the family.
That was her shield.
She had always hidden personal control behind institutional survival.
"Protect the employees."
"How?"
"Separate the company from the family trust."
Nora studied him.
"That could trigger a war."
"We're already in one."
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
She spoke carefully.
"Until now, you've been defending yourself and Lily."
"What changes?"
"You would be attacking the structure that gives Margaret power."
Daniel thought about Thomas's letter.
Distance.
Something Margaret couldn't threaten.
He nodded.
"Then we change it."
That night, Daniel received a court notification.
Margaret had amended her guardianship filing.
She was no longer seeking temporary shared authority.
She wanted emergency full custody of Lily.
And attached to the filing was a photograph.
Daniel holding the frying pan in the dining room.
It had been taken at exactly the right angle.
Lily was hidden behind him.
Vanessa appeared to be recoiling.
Margaret lay on the floor.
Daniel looked violent.
The caption beneath it read:
Daniel Mercer threatening family members in the presence of his minor child.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Someone at the table had taken it.
One of the silent relatives had not merely watched.
May you like
They had prepared evidence against him.
