Chapter 9 - The Accused

The strategy was obvious.
Make Daniel the thief before he could expose the theft.
By the time he reached Mercer Development, three directors had copies of a report showing transfers supposedly approved under Daniel's electronic authorization.
The signatures looked legitimate.
The access logs came from his executive credentials.
Margaret sat quietly while Vanessa spoke.
"My brother has been under extraordinary pressure for years."
Daniel entered.
Vanessa stopped.
He placed Maya's notebook on the table.
"Keep going."
Margaret stared at the notebook.
For the first time Daniel saw genuine fear on her face.
Vanessa recovered.
"We're discussing financial irregularities."
"So am I."
Pike stood.
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Sit down, Gerald."
"I'm general counsel."
"Not for long."
Pike remained standing.
Daniel connected his laptop to the screen.
Nora had warned him not to disclose everything.
Only enough.
A transfer authorization appeared.
"Apparently I approved this."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You did."
Daniel enlarged the digital certificate.
"My credential."
"Exactly."
"Used at 2:14 a.m. on February fourth."
Vanessa shrugged.
"You work late."
"I was in Tokyo."
Margaret said, "You have remote access."
"I did."
Daniel changed the screen.
A travel-security report appeared.
"But on that date my hardware authentication token was locked inside the Tokyo office's secure cabinet because I'd reported it malfunctioning."
Peter leaned forward.
Daniel continued.
"The transfer originated from headquarters."
Silence.
"The credentials were cloned."
Pike said, "That's speculation."
"Then you'll welcome the forensic audit."
Margaret stood.
"No company devices leave this building."
Daniel looked at her.
"Nobody asked them to."
Nora entered with two forensic accountants and an independent cybersecurity firm authorized under the board's emergency compliance provisions.
Peter Hale had approved them minutes earlier.
Margaret turned on him.
"You authorized this?"
Peter's face hardened.
"I authorized preservation."
Vanessa looked suddenly uncertain.
The company wasn't automatically obeying Margaret anymore.
Daniel placed Maya's notebook beside Pike.
"Recognize the handwriting?"
Pike did not touch it.
"No."
"Maya documented your attempt to change Thomas's trust after he became physically unable to sign."
"Her diary proves nothing."
"Then you're not worried."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Are you?"
Pike's face reddened.
Margaret interrupted.
"This is grotesque. You're using a dead woman's private writings to attack your family."
Daniel turned.
"You used my daughter."
Margaret stared at him.
He did not raise his voice.
That frightened her more.
"You had two years to leave Lily alone."
"She should never have been part of this."
Daniel heard the admission hidden inside the sentence.
"Part of what?"
Margaret realized too late.
Nobody moved.
Daniel repeated, "Part of what?"
She sat.
"Nothing."
The forensic team began imaging relevant devices.
Vanessa reached for her phone.
One investigator stopped her.
"Please don't alter or delete company data."
"It's my personal phone."
"Then keep it."
She shoved it into her bag.
Daniel watched.
That evening, Nora received confirmation from an independent accredited lab.
Lily was Daniel's biological daughter.
Daniel had submitted his sample and Lily's through a documented legal process after the forged report surfaced.
The result was greater than 99.99 percent.
Daniel stared at the paper.
He had not needed it emotionally.
But legally, it destroyed Margaret's manufactured uncertainty.
He carried Lily into the kitchen afterward.
She wanted pancakes for dinner.
Daniel made terrible pancakes.
She ate two.
"Daddy circle bad."
He looked at the misshapen pancake.
"That is a very advanced artistic shape."
"Bad circle."
Mara laughed from the counter.
For fifteen minutes the world felt normal.
Then Nora called.
"Cybersecurity found the cloned credential."
"Where?"
"On a laptop assigned to Claire Donnelly."
Daniel froze.
"Claire?"
"Yes."
The woman who had hidden Maya's evidence.
The woman who had sent the photograph.
The woman who had vanished.
Daniel tried to understand.
"Was Claire stealing the money?"
"We don't know."
"Can you trace where the laptop was used?"
"Mostly headquarters."
"Mostly?"
"One login came from the Mercer estate."
"When?"
"The night before Maya died."
Daniel said nothing.
Nora continued quickly.
"Daniel, that does not connect the login to the accident."
"I know."
But his mind had already gone there.
Maya driving home in rain.
A truck crossing the intersection.
An accident investigated and closed.
"Who was logged in?"
"We don't know."
"Find Claire."
"Ruiz is trying."
Daniel hung up.
Lily had fallen asleep at the table, cheek against her folded arm.
Daniel lifted her gently.
As he carried her toward the bedroom, his phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A voice message.
He played it quietly.
Claire Donnelly's voice whispered:
"Daniel, I didn't steal your father's money."
Static.
"I helped hide Maya's box because she asked me to."
A breath.
"But your mother found out."
Another pause.
"And if Margaret knows you have the notebook, you need to understand something."
Claire's voice began trembling.
"Vanessa hurting Lily was not the plan."
Daniel stopped walking.
"The plan was to make you believe you couldn't keep her."
May you like
The message ended.
