Chapter 5 - Eleven Days

The document fragment changed the custody fight.

Not legally.

Not yet.

But psychologically.

Daniel spent the night thinking about his father.

Thomas Mercer had been stern, disciplined and often emotionally distant, but unlike Margaret, he had never treated money as proof of moral worth.

Before his death from pancreatic cancer, Thomas had asked Daniel one strange question.

Are you building a life you actually want, or one your mother understands?

Daniel had been thirty-five then.

He and Maya had been together only six weeks.

Daniel never told his father about her.

At least he thought he hadn't.

Nora arranged for a forensic document examiner to preserve the fragment.

Then she filed Daniel's response to Margaret's guardianship petition, attaching Dr. Cho's medical documentation and requesting that Margaret and Vanessa receive no unsupervised contact with Lily while the investigation continued.

Margaret retaliated within hours.

A statement appeared in the financial press.

Mercer Development CEO Takes Temporary Leave During Private Family Matter.

Harmless words.

Then anonymous sources began telling reporters Daniel had experienced an "incident involving aggression."

By noon the company's share price had slipped four percent.

Peter Hale called.

"This is becoming public."

"My daughter already experienced the private version."

"I understand."

"No, Peter. You don't."

The chairman was silent.

Daniel softened slightly.

"Who authorized the statement?"

"Margaret."

"Without board approval?"

"She said it was necessary."

Daniel looked at the calendar.

Ten days until the proxy agreement expired.

"What is she trying to make the board do?"

Peter didn't answer.

Daniel understood.

"Remove me permanently?"

"I've heard discussions."

"About appointing Vanessa?"

Another silence.

That answer was louder.

Daniel ended the call.

Vanessa had spent fourteen years inside Mercer Development but never risen above senior vice president because Thomas had considered her reckless with debt.

After his death, Margaret had pushed repeatedly for Vanessa to receive more power.

Daniel had resisted.

He had believed it was business.

Now he wondered whether Lily had become collateral damage in something much older.

That afternoon, Lily woke from her nap screaming.

Daniel ran into the bedroom.

"No dark room!"

He gathered her into his arms.

"No dark room. You're here."

She cried against him.

He sat on the floor until her breathing slowed.

Then Lily pointed at the closet.

"Rabbit."

Her stuffed rabbit lay beside her.

Daniel picked it up.

"This rabbit?"

She shook her head.

"Other rabbit."

Daniel frowned.

"You have another one?"

"Blue rabbit."

He remembered.

Maya had bought Lily two stuffed rabbits before she was born.

One pink.

One blue.

The blue rabbit had disappeared months ago.

"Where is it?"

"Grandma took."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"When?"

Lily shrugged.

"Grandma angry."

"Why?"

"Rabbit had Daddy."

Daniel didn't understand.

"What did it have?"

"Daddy."

She touched the rabbit's belly.

Daniel examined the pink toy.

There was a zipper beneath its fabric.

Inside was a small voice recorder Maya had installed so Daniel could record messages when traveling.

He had forgotten about it.

Before Maya died, Daniel had recorded himself saying:

Good night, Lily. Daddy loves you.

The pink rabbit still played it.

Maybe the blue one contained another recording.

"Who recorded the blue rabbit?"

"Mama."

Daniel froze.

Maya had recorded messages too.

He vaguely remembered her mentioning it.

After her death, he couldn't bear to listen.

Margaret had offered to pack Maya's belongings.

Daniel had let her.

Another mistake.

He called Mara.

"Do you know where Lily's blue rabbit went?"

"I saw Mrs. Mercer take it."

"Where?"

"Basement archive."

Of course.

Daniel called Nora.

Within an hour she had drafted a preservation demand ordering Margaret, Vanessa and the estate staff not to destroy, move or alter any potential evidence connected to Lily or Thomas's papers.

Margaret called immediately.

Daniel answered for the first time.

"What are you doing?" she demanded.

"Protecting my daughter."

"You're humiliating your father."

"My father is dead."

"And you're destroying everything he built."

"No. I'm discovering what you buried."

Silence.

Daniel continued.

"Where's Lily's blue rabbit?"

Margaret's breathing changed.

There it was again.

Fear.

"I have no idea."

"Mara watched you take it."

"Mara is a disgruntled servant."

"Housekeeper."

"Do not correct me."

"I should have corrected you years ago."

Margaret's voice dropped.

"You think Maya loved you?"

Daniel's throat tightened.

"Careful."

"She lied to you."

"About what?"

"Ask Nora Walsh to investigate your perfect Maya."

Daniel stood.

"What did Maya lie about?"

Margaret laughed without humor.

"You still don't understand."

"Then explain it."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because in ten days, none of this will matter."

Daniel looked at the calendar.

"You keep making the same mistake, Mother."

"What mistake?"

"Thinking the eleventh day belongs to you."

He ended the call.

That evening, Nora arrived carrying a newly obtained copy of Thomas Mercer's probate inventory.

She placed it beside Daniel.

"There was a sealed supplemental trust."

Daniel looked up.

"Beneficiary?"

"Not publicly listed."

"Trustee?"

Nora's expression hardened.

"Gerald Pike."

Daniel stared at the name.

"Can we get the document?"

"Eventually."

"How eventually?"

"We request it formally. If Pike refuses, we go to court."

Daniel paced.

"What triggers the trust?"

"That's the interesting part."

Nora pointed to an old probate notation.

The trust remained sealed until the occurrence of one of two events.

Daniel's fortieth birthday.

Or confirmation that Daniel had a biological child.

Daniel looked toward Lily's bedroom.

"But Lily was born more than two years ago."

"Exactly."

The trust should already have opened.

It hadn't.

Someone had kept it closed.

Daniel's phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

The blue rabbit.

It was sitting on a metal table.

Below it were six words.

DROP THE AUDIT OR LOSE THIS FOREVER.

Daniel showed Nora.

She read it once.

Then said, "Now we know somebody is scared."

Daniel stared at Maya's rabbit.

"No."

His voice became cold.

May you like

"Now we know somebody has evidence."
