Chapter 8 - The Box Maya Left

The storage unit had been paid automatically for almost three years.
From an account Daniel didn't recognize.
Because it was rented under Maya's name, police needed time to clarify access.
Nora found a faster lawful route.
Daniel was administrator of Maya's estate on Lily's behalf.
By evening they were standing inside Unit 214.
There were only four boxes.
One drafting tube.
A winter coat.
And the blue stuffed rabbit.
Daniel stopped at the doorway.
For several seconds he couldn't move.
He picked up the rabbit.
Pressed its belly.
Static crackled.
Then Maya's voice filled the small concrete room.
"Hi, Lily."
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had not heard Maya's voice in two years.
"If you're hearing this, your daddy is probably traveling and pretending he isn't checking his phone every eleven minutes."
Daniel laughed once through sudden tears.
Maya continued.
"Tell him I said to relax."
The recording was ordinary.
Tender.
Nothing about the trust.
Nothing about Margaret.
When it finished, Daniel pressed the rabbit against his forehead.
Nora quietly examined the boxes.
"We can stop."
"No."
Daniel wiped his face.
"Keep going."
The first contained architectural plans.
Thomas Mercer's private office renovation.
Maya had indeed worked for him.
The second contained invoices and correspondence.
The third held photographs.
The fourth was locked.
The key from Claire's apartment opened it.
Inside lay a notebook.
Maya's handwriting covered the first page.
THOMAS MERCER — PRIVATE MEETINGS
Daniel sat on the floor.
Entry after entry documented Maya's renovation meetings with Thomas.
At first, everything concerned architecture.
Then the tone changed.
Thomas had discovered Maya was dating Daniel.
Instead of disapproving, he had apparently been amused.
One entry quoted him:
Margaret will hate you. Do not mistake that for evidence you've done something wrong.
Daniel almost heard his father's voice.
Several pages later:
T. says he changed the child trust. Wants Daniel's future children outside Margaret's control. G.P. furious.
Gerald Pike.
Another:
G.P. says trust creates "unnecessary fragmentation." T. says that's the point.
Then:
T. asked me to witness inventory of original papers because he doesn't trust G.P. anymore.
Daniel looked at Nora.
"Why Maya?"
"Because she was there. Maybe because your father trusted someone outside the family."
The final relevant entry was dated four days before Thomas's death.
T. too weak to sign. G.P. brought papers anyway. Margaret came after. Heard them arguing. T. said, "You will not rewrite me after I'm dead."
Daniel swallowed.
Below that Maya had written:
Need to tell Daniel. T. asked me to wait until he is gone. Says Daniel needs to grieve father before fighting mother. I hate this.
Daniel turned the page.
Two weeks after Thomas died:
Gerald says amendment is valid. It isn't. I saw Thomas's hand. He couldn't hold a pen.
Then:
Margaret offered me $5m to leave Daniel. Now I understand why. If Daniel and I have a child, the trust activates. She doesn't know I'm pregnant.
Daniel covered his mouth.
Maya had known.
She had discovered the pregnancy before telling him.
She had known Lily would trigger the trust.
Next entry:
Told Margaret no. She called me a thief. Said any child of mine would never be a Mercer.
Then:
I need independent copies somewhere safe. Claire may help. She hates Gerald. Not sure I trust her.
Claire.
Daniel kept turning pages.
The entries stopped one month before Maya's accident.
Nora examined the remaining contents.
Bank statements.
Copies of Thomas's trust.
Emails between Pike and Margaret.
Nothing proving involvement in Maya's death.
Daniel felt both relieved and unsettled.
"Why did Claire hide this for years?"
Nora said, "We need to ask her."
"She disappeared."
"Maybe she isn't running from us."
Daniel looked at her.
"Maybe she's running from Margaret."
Inside the drafting tube they found one final item.
A signed letter from Thomas.
Addressed to Daniel.
The seal had never been broken.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then someone has failed to give it to you when they should have.
He stopped.
His hands trembled.
Nora waited silently.
Daniel continued.
I have spent much of my life confusing control with protection. Your mother is better at this mistake than I ever was.
The trust I created is not primarily money. It is distance. I want your future family to possess something Margaret cannot threaten, borrow against, condition, or take away.
Daniel breathed through the pain in his chest.
Then came the final paragraph.
If you ever become a father, do one thing better than I did: when your child reaches for you, choose the child before the company, before the name, before me.
Daniel stared at the words.
He thought of the dining room.
The pan.
Lily's arms around his neck.
He had chosen her.
Too late to prevent what happened.
But not too late for what came next.
Nora removed another folded paper from the box.
Her expression changed.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"This is a transfer schedule."
He read it.
Over seven years, nearly thirty-four million dollars had moved from the dormant child trust reserve into entities linked to Mercer Development projects.
Daniel's throat tightened.
"That's what Margaret is hiding."
"Maybe."
Nora pointed to one recipient.
V Holdings LLC.
Daniel recognized the initial.
Vanessa.
The amount transferred to it was nine million dollars.
Daniel stared at the number.
Then his phone rang.
Peter Hale.
His voice sounded shaken.
"Daniel, you need to get here."
"Where?"
"The office."
"Why?"
"Vanessa just told the board you stole thirty-four million dollars from your father's trust."
Daniel looked down at the document in his hands.
The stolen money.
May you like
She was accusing him first.
