Chapter 13 - Vanessa's Choice

Daniel did not race to the estate.

He called Ruiz.

Then Nora.

Then the investigators.

Vanessa kept texting.

Hurry.

Daniel replied only once.

Leave the documents alone. Leave the room.

Vanessa answered:

If I walk away, she'll destroy everything.

Daniel typed:

Do not commit another crime trying to fix the first one.

Police arrived before Margaret could burn the boxes.

The furnace itself had not been used in years, but a metal barrel, lighter fluid and shredded records told a clear story.

Margaret claimed she was disposing of old personal papers.

Investigators secured what they lawfully could under warrants related to the expanding fraud case.

Vanessa agreed to give a statement.

Daniel did not attend.

He refused to let her cooperation become a family reconciliation performance.

The next morning she asked to see him.

Nora arranged the meeting at her office.

Vanessa looked smaller without Margaret beside her.

Daniel felt no sympathy.

She began, "I didn't hit Lily with the pan."

"I know."

"I never planned to."

"You stood over a terrified two-year-old holding it."

Vanessa looked down.

"I wanted to scare her."

"Congratulations."

She flinched.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Why?"

"Mother said Lily needed to stop thinking the estate belonged to her."

Daniel stared.

"She's two."

"I know."

"You keep saying that as though knowledge helps you."

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel remained unmoved.

"What happened before I came in?"

"Lily asked for more bread."

"And?"

"I told her no."

"Why?"

"Mother said she was becoming entitled."

Daniel almost couldn't process it.

A toddler asking for bread.

Entitled.

"Then what?"

"Lily reached for the basket. It fell."

"The chair?"

"She backed into it."

"The pan?"

"I picked it up because she wouldn't stop crying."

"To scare her quiet."

Vanessa nodded.

"What had you done before?"

Silence.

"Vanessa."

"I took food away."

"What else?"

"Made her stand in the hall."

"Basement."

Vanessa covered her face.

"Twice."

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Did Mother know?"

"Yes."

"Did she order it?"

"She said Lily needed consequences."

"For what?"

"Being difficult."

"She's two."

Vanessa cried harder.

Daniel felt nothing except grief for the sister he had once believed he knew.

"Why did you hate Maya?"

"I didn't hate her at first."

"What changed?"

"Mother told me Maya knew about the trust before she became pregnant."

Daniel stared.

"So?"

"She said Maya got pregnant deliberately."

Daniel shook his head.

"Maya didn't even tell me she knew about the trust."

"Mother said Maya wanted the money."

"And you believed her."

"Yes."

"Even after Maya died?"

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel understood something ugly.

"Then Lily became easier to blame."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

"Did you ever ask yourself why Mother needed you angry?"

No answer.

Daniel sat back.

"Because while you blamed a dead woman and a baby, Margaret transferred nine million dollars into your companies."

Vanessa looked startled.

"I thought those were loans."

"From whose money?"

Her face drained.

"I didn't know."

"Exactly."

Margaret had purchased Vanessa's loyalty with money stolen from the trust Vanessa believed Lily was stealing.

The elegance of the manipulation almost impressed Daniel.

Almost.

Vanessa took out her phone.

"I have recordings."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Of Mother?"

"For years."

"Why?"

"Because I stopped trusting her six months ago."

"Yet you kept hurting Lily."

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Daniel did not rescue her from the silence.

"What do the recordings contain?"

"Her conversations with Gerald. Some about transfers."

"Anything about Maya's accident?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"One conversation."

Daniel's heart changed rhythm.

"Play it."

Vanessa opened a file.

Margaret's voice:

You were supposed to frighten her, Gerald, not follow her through a storm.

Pike answered:

I needed the papers.

Margaret:

And did you get them?

Pike:

No. She drove like a lunatic when she saw me.

Margaret:

Then thank God the police believed the truck caused it.

Daniel stopped the recording.

He couldn't breathe.

Nora immediately said, "This does not prove they caused the crash."

Daniel nodded mechanically.

But it proved Pike had followed Maya that night.

And Margaret knew.

Vanessa whispered, "There's more."

Pike's voice resumed.

If Maya had just pulled over—

Margaret:

Stop. I don't want details. I told you to recover Thomas's papers. I did not tell you to chase a pregnant—

Pike:

She wasn't pregnant. The child was already born.

Margaret:

You know what I mean.

The recording ended.

Daniel stood and walked to the window.

Maya had seen Pike following her.

Maybe she drove faster.

Maybe fear changed her choices.

The truck had still crossed the intersection illegally.

But perhaps Maya would have approached it differently if she had not been fleeing.

Cause became morally complicated even if legal responsibility remained uncertain.

Daniel turned.

"When did you record that?"

"Seven months ago."

"You knew Gerald followed Maya?"

"I didn't understand what they meant."

"You never asked me?"

"I was afraid."

There it was.

The family disease.

Fear.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"You will give every recording to investigators."

"I will."

"You will testify truthfully about Lily."

"Yes."

"You will never contact her unless a court and her therapist eventually agree it's appropriate."

Vanessa started crying again.

"Daniel—"

"No."

"She's my niece."

"You surrendered that privilege every time she looked at you for mercy and you used her fear."

Vanessa nodded.

Daniel gathered his papers.

As he reached the door she whispered, "I'm sorry."

He stopped.

Did not turn.

"Be sorry enough to tell the truth when it costs you."

Then he left.

That afternoon, the proxy agreement expired.

For the first time since Thomas's death, Margaret no longer controlled Daniel's voting rights.

At 4:02 p.m., Daniel submitted a resolution removing the Mercer Family Trust's special influence over company governance pending investigation.

At 4:11, Peter Hale called.

"You have enough votes."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Margaret's reign over the company had ended.

But at 4:18, Nora received an emergency notification.

Margaret had transferred nearly all liquid assets from three family-controlled accounts that morning.

"Where did it go?" Daniel asked.

Nora stared at the tracing report.

"Not where."

She looked up.

"To whom."

"Who?"

May you like

"Gerald Pike."
