Chapter 12 - What Lucy Had Learned to Hide

Lucy stopped speaking about Celeste outside therapy.

That frightened Ryan more than nightmares would have.

She spoke about cartoons.

Pancakes.

Snow.

A classmate named Molly who ate glue despite being told not to.

But when anyone mentioned Graywater, Lucy became quiet.

Dr. Ruiz explained that silence could be protective.

“Children sometimes divide experience into safe subjects and unsafe subjects.”

Ryan sat opposite her.

“How do I get her to trust me?”

“You stop making trust something she has to prove.”

He nodded.

“She thinks I approved the punishment.”

“She is testing whether your behavior now matches what you say.”

That hurt.

It was also fair.

Ryan changed his schedule.

He had no executive office to return to anyway.

He walked Lucy to preschool.

He learned how she liked apples cut.

He sat on the floor while she built crooked towers from blocks.

He also began therapy himself.

Not because a judge ordered it.

Because the slap at Graywater remained inside him like a crack.

He had spent years believing he was different from Harold because he did not intimidate people physically.

One open hand had destroyed that certainty.

Meanwhile, the criminal investigation widened.

Nora gave prosecutors photographs.

Three bruises on Lucy’s upper arm from separate dates.

A picture of the cuff in a linen closet.

A text from Celeste:

Do not interfere with how I correct her again or you will be replaced.

Nora had responded:

Ryan would never allow this.

Celeste:

Ryan already did. Ask him if you don’t believe me.

Nora had tried.

Her calls to Ryan’s hotel were redirected.

His assistant had been told by Celeste that “family matters” should go through her.

Ryan fired no one.

His assistant cried when she learned what the messages had actually hidden.

“I thought I was protecting your negotiations.”

Ryan answered, “So did I.”

That sentence followed him everywhere.

Everyone had believed they were protecting something.

A company.

A reputation.

A marriage.

A deal.

And a five-year-old girl had paid for all of it.

One evening Lucy sat on Rachel’s living-room carpet with three dolls.

She placed one doll beneath a chair.

Another stood beside it.

The third was hidden behind a toy sofa.

Ryan watched from the kitchen.

Lucy made the standing doll say, “Tell the truth and nobody loves you.”

Ryan’s breath caught.

He did not interrupt.

The hidden doll whispered, “I know.”

Lucy repeated the scene.

“Tell the truth and Daddy goes away.”

“I know.”

Ryan looked at Rachel.

She had heard too.

Later, with Dr. Ruiz’s guidance, Lucy revealed that Celeste had told her Ryan would be arrested if she spoke about the cuff.

“Because Daddy hits people when he’s angry.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Celeste had said that before Ryan slapped her.

The narrative had been planted in advance.

She expected violence.

Or intended to provoke it.

David warned him not to jump too far.

“Planning to portray you as unstable is not proof she planned the dining-room confrontation.”

Ryan nodded.

He wanted evidence, not assumptions.

Then the evidence arrived.

Nina called.

Ryan’s sister-in-law had been nearly silent since the dinner.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A group chat.”

Ryan’s stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“Celeste, Marcus, Adrian, your mother, and me.”

“I’m not in it.”

“No.”

“What was it for?”

“The dinner.”

Nina sounded ashamed.

“Celeste said you were under pressure and she wanted the family aligned before you came back. Most of it is schedules and legal documents.”

“And?”

“There’s a message from that afternoon.”

Nina forwarded screenshots.

Celeste had written at 4:42 p.m.:

Ryan may arrive before midnight. If he sees resistance from Lucy, do not intervene. He needs to understand how difficult she has become.

Marcus replied:

Keep it controlled.

Adrian:

This is insane. Take the restraint off before dinner.

Celeste:

Then you explain why she stole the key.

Margaret:

Celeste, enough.

Celeste:

No. Tonight everyone chooses a side.

Ryan stared at the words.

The family had known Lucy would be restrained.

Some had objected.

No one had stopped the dinner.

Then Nina sent one final screenshot.

A private message Celeste had sent her two minutes before Ryan walked in.

If Ryan loses his temper, let the camera run.

Ryan sat down.

May you like

The slap had been his choice.

But Celeste had been waiting for it.
