Chapter 18 - The Red Room

The “red room” was not red anymore.
It had once been Graywater’s photography darkroom.
Owen remembered that the service staff still called it that even after the walls were painted cream and the room became storage.
Police searched it with a warrant.
Behind a loose electrical panel they found a network drive.
Owen had hidden it there.
“I copied the camera system after I realized someone installed devices without telling me.”
The drive contained six months of recordings.
Celeste had deleted clips from the cloud account.
Owen had preserved local backups.
Ryan was not allowed to view everything.
Some footage involved Lucy.
Prosecutors protected it.
But David was permitted to review relevant excerpts.
One showed Celeste in Ryan’s office with Marcus.
She held Ryan’s hardware token.
Marcus said, “Once the trust is under independent administration, Graywater can’t block the refinancing.”
Celeste replied, “Ryan will contest it.”
“He’ll be fighting the board, the domestic case, and the loans.”
“He always fights.”
Marcus smiled.
“Then give him something to hit.”
Ryan stopped the video.
He stood.
David said quietly, “Sit down.”
Ryan did not.
He walked to the window.
His slap was still his responsibility.
But now the plan was explicit.
Celeste had wanted a violent incident.
Not necessarily the chain scene.
Something.
Anything.
A shove.
A broken object.
A threat.
She had studied him long enough to know grief and fear made him volatile.
The next clip was worse.
Two days before dinner.
Lucy stood near the office door.
Celeste noticed her.
“What did you hear?”
Lucy said nothing.
Celeste crouched.
“Did you hear Uncle Marcus?”
Lucy nodded.
“What did he say?”
“I don’t know.”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“Liar.”
Lucy whispered, “Daddy says lying is bad.”
For one second Celeste closed her eyes.
When she opened them, she looked almost wounded.
Then she said, “Your daddy lies all the time.”
Lucy shook her head.
Celeste grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of frame.
Ryan could not continue.
David stopped playback.
“You don’t need to see the rest.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No.”
Ryan looked at him.
David held his gaze.
“This is evidence, not punishment for you.”
Ryan sat slowly.
That sentence stayed with him.
Evidence, not punishment.
He had been using every revelation to punish himself.
For Denver.
For the marriage.
For the slap.
For not knowing.
Some guilt was deserved.
Not all guilt was useful.
Another clip showed Margaret entering the pantry and taking the basement key.
Another showed her slipping it into Lucy’s apron.
Marcus was in the dining room.
He had not noticed.
Margaret’s cowardice remained real.
So did her attempt to help.
Then came the crucial recording.
Celeste and Adrian in the basement three weeks earlier.
Adrian held a scanned trust amendment.
“You can’t use this.”
Celeste said, “Why?”
“Because I made it after Emma died.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
Adrian.
The forged document had originally been created by his brother.
“For what?” Celeste asked.
“Dad wanted a contingency file in case Rachel challenged the company debt against Graywater.”
Celeste stared.
“You forged Emma’s signature?”
“Dad told me to.”
“And Margaret’s seal?”
“Scanned.”
Celeste laughed softly.
Not kindly.
“You people really did build this family out of paper.”
Then Adrian said, “Destroy it.”
Celeste folded the document.
“No.”
“Celeste.”
“This may be the only honest thing your family ever made.”
She kept it.
Years later, she tried to use it.
The conspiracy widened again.
Harold had started it.
Adrian enabled it.
Celeste weaponized it.
Marcus monetized it.
Margaret hid it.
Ryan benefited from the empire built above it while knowing none of the details because he had rarely asked.
There were no clean hands.
Only different degrees of dirt.
That evening Detective Benton called.
They had located Adrian.
Alive.
In a cabin owned by a friend near Green Bay.
He had not fled the country.
He had been drinking heavily.
His overseas transfer had gone to an account created by Marcus.
Adrian claimed Marcus told him the money was needed for legal defense and urged him to disappear because federal agents planned to arrest him immediately.
“Is he cooperating?” Ryan asked.
“Now he is.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Adrian had run.
But he had not vanished by accident.
Marcus had pushed him.
Another pressure point.
Another manipulated weakness.
The next morning, Adrian asked to see Ryan.
Ryan almost refused.
Then agreed.
His brother looked smaller in the interview room.
“I’m sorry.”
Ryan sat opposite him.
“Which part?”
Adrian’s mouth trembled.
“All of it.”
“That’s too large an answer.”
“I forged Emma’s trust amendment.”
“I know.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Then there’s one more thing you need to know.”
Ryan waited.
Adrian looked at him.
“Celeste didn’t come to the charity auction to meet you.”
Ryan frowned.
“She came to meet Lucy’s trust attorney.”
Ryan’s blood ran cold.
May you like
“What?”
“You were the opportunity she didn’t expect.”
