Chapter 7 - Alder Crest

Marcus Vale’s office occupied the top floor of a renovated brick building in Milwaukee’s Third Ward.
Alder Crest Advisory presented itself as discreet.
The lobby was quiet.
The receptionist wore gray.
The walls displayed expensive photographs of bridges, ports, and rail yards.
Ryan did not go there.
He sent auditors.
Three of them.
Independent.
David Chen insisted.
“Do not confront Marcus while there’s a domestic restraining order involving his sister. Do not give them another photograph they can use.”
Ryan hated the advice because it was good.
Instead, he worked from Rachel’s dining table while Lucy stayed at preschool for a half day.
By noon the audit team had traced $4.6 million in Hale Meridian payments from Alder Crest into two entities.
North Channel Management.
Red Pike Holdings.
Red Pike owned a condominium in Miami.
North Channel owned nothing visible.
Then David found its manager.
Adrian Hale.
Ryan drove to Chicago.
Adrian refused to see him.
Ryan entered anyway.
His brother stood behind his desk.
“You can’t keep doing this.”
“North Channel.”
Adrian’s face emptied.
Ryan shut the door.
“How much?”
“Ryan—”
“How much did you take?”
Adrian sat.
“Over the years?”
Ryan’s stomach tightened.
“Yes.”
“Maybe three million.”
“Maybe?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know how many millions of dollars you stole?”
“I paid some back.”
“That does not improve the sentence.”
Adrian rubbed both hands over his face.
“I had debt.”
“Gambling?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Ryan looked away.
Adrian had always been the controlled brother.
The dependable one.
The one who teased Ryan for taking risks.
“How long?”
“Fifteen years.”
Ryan almost laughed.
“Fifteen.”
“I stopped.”
“You opened another company.”
“Because Celeste made me.”
“No. She blackmailed you. That explains what she did. It does not explain what you did.”
Adrian’s eyes flashed.
“You think you’re so different?”
Ryan stepped closer.
“I’m waiting.”
“Dad used your reputation to clean his mess. Every lender meeting, every magazine profile, every board dinner. Ryan the genius son. Ryan the ethical son. Meanwhile I handled the garbage.”
“You stole.”
“I covered Dad first.”
“And then you stole.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s voice broke.
Ryan hated that he still felt sorry for him.
“How did Celeste become involved?”
“She found the vendor scheme during the audit.”
“Why did she withdraw her report?”
“Because she confronted Dad.”
“Harold?”
Adrian nodded.
“He showed her documents proving her father’s company had falsified maintenance logs.”
“So Martin Vale was guilty?”
“Partly.”
“Partly?”
“Dad had pressured subcontractors to defer repairs and then blamed Martin when regulators started asking questions.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
It was exactly the kind of compromise Harold would have called survival.
“What did Celeste want?”
“At first? The truth.”
Ryan looked at him.
“She wanted Dad to admit what he’d done publicly.”
“And?”
“He refused.”
“What happened?”
“Her father died six months later.”
“How?”
“Heart attack.”
Ryan exhaled.
No murder.
No mystery.
Just damage.
Adrian continued.
“Celeste came back different. She took copies of everything she had. She let the audit close. Then she waited.”
“For what?”
“For us to need her.”
Ryan thought of the charity auction.
“She met me deliberately.”
“I assume so.”
“You knew?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you know?”
“Before the wedding.”
Ryan’s face went numb.
“You knew before I married her.”
Adrian stood.
“I told her if she hurt you—”
Ryan grabbed the front of Adrian’s shirt.
Then stopped.
He released him.
He would not repeat Graywater.
Adrian straightened his collar.
“You think not hitting me makes you better?”
“No.”
Ryan’s voice was low.
“It keeps me from becoming useful to you.”
He walked out.
In the elevator, his phone rang.
Rachel.
He answered instantly.
“What happened?”
“Lucy’s okay.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Rachel continued.
“But someone came to the preschool.”
His body went cold.
“Who?”
“Celeste.”
The elevator doors opened.
Ryan did not move.
“She has a restraining order against me. She is not supposed to—”
“It doesn’t prevent her from approaching Lucy.”
“She’s not Lucy’s legal parent.”
“She told the school she was there to drop off a birthday gift.”
“What did Lucy do?”
“She hid under a table.”
Ryan stepped into the lobby.
Rachel’s voice shook with anger.
“The school called me. Celeste left before police arrived.”
“Did she touch her?”
“No.”
“Did she say anything?”
Rachel hesitated.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“She told Lucy to remember what happens to people who open locked doors.”
Ryan stopped walking.

The message was not for Lucy.
It was for him.
