Chapter 13 - Emma and Celeste

The second email between Emma and Celeste was found on an archived server.
It had survived because Emma used an old Graywater address that Ryan never thought to search.
The subject line contained only one word.
Records.
Emma had written first.
Ms. Vale, I believe your withdrawn audit report intersects with fraudulent collateral documents involving property owned by my family trust. I would like to speak confidentially.
Celeste responded the same day.
I cannot discuss client materials.
Emma:
Then don’t discuss the audit. Discuss my forged signature.
Six hours later, Celeste agreed to meet.
They met at Graywater.
Ryan requested the old gate logs.
Celeste’s car had entered at 7:08 p.m.
Left at 9:41.
Ryan had been at a distribution conference in Atlanta.
Lucy had been two.
What happened during those two and a half hours remained unknown until Rachel remembered Emma’s journals.
She brought a box from storage.
Ryan had never read them after Emma died.
He had felt it would be an intrusion.
Now he opened the entry dated March 14.
Emma’s handwriting was weak but clear.
Celeste came tonight. Younger than I expected. Angry in a way I understand.
Ryan swallowed.
He continued.
Her father was used by Harold. She knows Adrian is stealing. She wants exposure. I want protection for Lucy.
The next lines were underlined.
She asked me what I would pay for silence.
Ryan stopped.
Rachel whispered, “Oh God.”
Emma continued:
I told her nothing. She said everyone pays eventually.
Ryan felt something inside him settle.
There it was.
The beginning.
Celeste had not merely transformed after Emma’s death.
She had already been willing to convert truth into leverage.
But the journal complicated even that.
Two pages later Emma wrote:
She came back after an hour. Apologized. Said she had spent years watching my family survive consequences that destroyed hers. She cried. I believed the tears.
Ryan stared.
Celeste had almost chosen differently.
Almost.
Emma and Celeste made an agreement.
Celeste would give Emma copies of the audit materials.
Emma would use them to protect Graywater and force Hale Meridian’s internal cleanup.
But before that could happen, Emma’s health collapsed.
She was hospitalized.
Then Adrian visited her.
The next journal entry was shorter.
Adrian begged me not to destroy the company. Said thousands of employees would pay for Harold’s crimes. I hate that he may be right for the wrong reasons.
Then:
Celeste has stopped answering.
Ryan closed the journal.
Rachel asked, “What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
David found part of the answer in financial records.
Three days after Emma’s hospitalization, Harold Hale had transferred $400,000 to Martin Vale’s surviving estate through an intermediary.
Celeste controlled the estate.
“Payment?” Rachel asked.
“Maybe.”
“For silence?”
Ryan nodded.
Then another transfer.
$200,000.
A month later.
Another.
Celeste had taken money from Harold.
Not millions.
Enough to bind herself.
Ryan understood the trap.
If she exposed the fraud, she would expose her own payments.
After Emma died, Harold retained control.
Celeste retained evidence.
Adrian kept stealing.
Years later, Harold died.
Celeste no longer needed him.
She needed Ryan.
So she entered his life.
Not with a gun.
Not with a threat.
With patience.
Dinner.
Laughter.
Shared grief.
She had once sat beside Ryan at Graywater and told him she wished she could have known Emma.
He had thought it was kindness.
Now he realized she had.
That revelation broke something quieter than rage.
His marriage had not been entirely fake.
He refused to believe every morning, every holiday, every moment was performance.
That would be easier.
No human being could sustain a lie that perfectly.
Celeste had laughed genuinely.
She had once sat all night beside Lucy during a fever.
She had cried when Ryan proposed.
She had been complicated enough to love them and still use them.
That made her more frightening.
A person did not need to feel nothing to do terrible things.
They only needed to decide something else mattered more.
That night Ryan received an email from Celeste.
Sent through attorneys, permitted under the order.
One sentence.
Emma understood me better than you ever did.
Ryan read it several times.
Then replied only through David.
Do not contact Lucy again.
Ten minutes later, another message arrived.
Not from Celeste.
May you like
From Marcus.
