Chapter 8 - The Silence at the Table

Margaret came to Rachel’s house that evening.

Rachel did not want to let her in.

Ryan did.

Not because he had forgiven her.

Because he wanted answers.

Margaret entered carrying a small overnight bag.

“I brought Lucy’s clothes.”

Ryan looked at it.

“From Graywater?”

“Yes.”

“You went there?”

“Celeste allowed me.”

The word allowed made his stomach turn.

Margaret sat at the kitchen table.

She looked twenty years older than she had at the dinner.

Ryan remained standing.

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

Margaret stared at her hands.

“There isn’t an answer that makes me decent.”

“Try anyway.”

“She had shown me documents about Harold.”

“You already knew what Harold did.”

“Not all of it.”

“What didn’t you know?”

Margaret swallowed.

“That Emma’s signature had been forged.”

Ryan froze.

“She showed you?”

“Three days before dinner.”

“And you said nothing.”

“She said if I interfered with how she handled Lucy, she would release everything.”

Ryan’s voice sharpened.

“So you traded Lucy for Dad’s reputation.”

Margaret flinched.

“I told myself the cuff was temporary.”

“You saw a metal restraint on your granddaughter.”

“She said it was used only when Lucy tried to leave the house.”

“And you believed that?”

“No.”

There it was again.

No.

Margaret had known.

Maybe not the full truth.

Enough.

“Why were you all at dinner?”

Margaret looked away.

“Celeste invited us.”

“For what?”

“A family agreement.”

Ryan sat across from her.

“What agreement?”

“She said Hale Meridian was in danger. She said you were making reckless decisions because you were exhausted. The Denver merger. The loans.”

“What did she want you to sign?”

Margaret’s mouth trembled.

“A statement supporting temporary board oversight.”

Ryan stared.

“By Adrian?”

“And Marcus as outside restructuring adviser.”

Ryan laughed softly.

“That dinner was a board coup.”

Margaret began crying.

“I didn’t sign.”

“You sat there while my daughter served dinner in a chain.”

“I froze.”

“You chose.”

The distinction struck her.

Ryan saw it.

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

He expected denial.

Instead Margaret whispered, “I chose.”

Silence settled.

Then Rachel came downstairs holding Lucy’s laundry.

She paused when she saw Margaret.

“Lucy’s asleep.”

Margaret stood.

“May I see her?”

“No.”

Ryan looked at Rachel.

She did not soften.

Margaret picked up her coat.

At the door, she turned to Ryan.

“There’s something else.”

He almost laughed.

“What?”

“Harold kept a private ledger.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Celeste has it?”

“She had photographs. Not the original.”

“Who does?”

Margaret’s face changed.

“I think Owen knows.”

After she left, Ryan called Owen.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

David located him through a mutual contact.

Owen had not gone home.

His truck had been found at a motel near Lake Geneva.

Ryan and David drove there with Detective Benton.

Room 14 was empty.

No blood.

No overturned furniture.

Owen’s coat hung behind the door.

His wallet sat beside the bed.

Detective Benton frowned.

“Maybe he left voluntarily.”

“Without his wallet?”

She did not answer.

Ryan saw a motel notepad beside the lamp.

One sheet had been removed.

He tilted it toward the light.

Writing pressure had marked the page beneath.

David used the side of a pencil to shade over it.

Letters appeared.

317 — NOT THE DOOR. LOCKER.

Ryan stared.

“What locker?”

Benton photographed the note.

“Do you know anything associated with 317?”

“The key Lucy gave me had that number.”

“And the key opened the basement.”

“Yes.”

“But maybe the tag wasn’t identifying the door.”

Ryan felt a slow chill.

The brass key had remained in police evidence after the Graywater search.

Detective Benton called the property room.

While she spoke, David checked his phone.

“Ryan.”

Something in his voice made Ryan turn.

A news alert.

Hale Meridian shares were private, but the company’s debt had publicly traded notes.

The story about Ryan striking Celeste had spread.

Now a second article had appeared.

HALE MERIDIAN CEO FACES QUESTIONS OVER UNDISCLOSED DEBT AND FAMILY TRUST ASSETS.

Ryan read the first paragraph.

The article cited anonymous internal documents.

Loan records.

The same forged loan records Celeste had filed in court.

Someone was leaking them deliberately.

His phone rang.

The chairman of Hale Meridian’s board.

Ryan answered.

“Thomas.”

The chairman’s voice was careful.

“The board wants you to take a temporary leave.”

Ryan looked at David.

“Because I slapped Celeste?”

“Because of everything.”

“I didn’t authorize those loans.”

“Then the investigation will show that.”

“And until then?”

Silence.

Ryan understood.

Celeste had wanted him away from Graywater.

Now she was pushing him out of his company.

The chairman said, “Ryan, please don’t make us vote.”

Ryan stared at the imprint on the motel paper.

“Schedule the vote.”

He ended the call.

David looked at him.

“That may not be smart.”

May you like

Ryan folded the shaded sheet.

“I’m done helping people hide.”
