Chapter 19 - What Celeste Wanted First

The charity auction had been held for a children’s hospital foundation.

Ryan remembered it vividly because Lucy, then three, had spilled apple juice on his tuxedo before he left.

Celeste had laughed at the stain when they met.

He had assumed coincidence.

Adrian now told him otherwise.

Celeste had attended because David Chen’s former law partner, Samuel Kessler, was scheduled to be there.

Kessler later founded Kessler Fiduciary Services.

Ryan’s stomach tightened.

“She was targeting the trust before she met me.”

Adrian nodded.

“She wanted access to Emma’s records.”

“Why?”

“To prove Graywater had been used illegally as collateral.”

“That would help Lucy.”

“At first.”

Ryan stared.

Adrian continued.

“Celeste wanted leverage against the family. If she controlled proof that Harold forged Emma’s signature, she could force restitution for what happened to Martin.”

“Then she met me.”

“Yes.”

“And married me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you warn her away?”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“I was already compromised.”

Ryan felt no surprise anymore.

Only exhaustion.

Celeste’s original motive had not been simple greed.

She wanted evidence.

Then revenge.

Then money.

Then control.

By the time she married Ryan, those motives had fused.

He wanted to hear it from her.

His attorneys said no.

Detective Benton said absolutely not.

Then Celeste requested a settlement conference in the divorce case.

Legally supervised.

Ryan agreed.

They met in separate conference rooms first.

Then, for twenty minutes, with attorneys present, face-to-face.

Celeste wore black.

No visible bruise remained.

Ryan had not seen her in weeks.

She looked tired.

Human.

That almost made him angrier.

She looked at him.

“How is Lucy?”

“You don’t get to ask.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“I think about her every day.”

“That does not help her.”

“No.”

Ryan studied her.

“Did you ever love her?”

Celeste’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Then explain the chain.”

Her eyes filled.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“I was angry.”

“At a five-year-old?”

“At everything.”

“Not an answer.”

“She heard Marcus. Nora challenged me. The trust plan was collapsing. Your mother threatened to tell you. Adrian was panicking. Lucy kept looking at me like she knew.”

“She was five.”

“I know.”

“You keep saying that now.”

Celeste wiped one tear away.

Ryan felt nothing like forgiveness.

She continued.

“The first time I used the cuff, I told myself it was for ten minutes.”

He looked away.

“She had tried to go toward the lake—”

“Stop.”

Celeste fell silent.

“Do not use one thing she did months earlier to make this sound connected to safety.”

Her mouth closed.

Ryan leaned forward.

“You wanted control.”

Celeste nodded once.

“Yes.”

“That is the truth.”

“Yes.”

“Why her?”

“I needed the house quiet. I needed everyone quiet.”

Ryan stared.

“So you made the smallest person pay.”

Celeste looked down.

“Yes.”

The admission was almost unbearable.

Then she whispered, “I hated your family before I knew you.”

Ryan said nothing.

“I hated Graywater. I hated the company. I hated photographs of all of you smiling while my father died believing he was a fraud.”

“And me?”

“At first you were access.”

The truth landed even though he expected it.

“Then?”

“I loved you.”

Ryan’s expression did not change.

“I did.”

“You loved what you could control.”

“No.”

“You drugged my trust in myself. You forged records. You isolated Lucy.”

“I didn’t drug you.”

“You encouraged medication when you knew what it did to me.”

“I used what you were already taking.”

She heard herself.

Her face changed.

Ryan sat back.

Celeste whispered, “That sounded terrible.”

“It was terrible before you said it.”

She covered her mouth.

For the first time, Ryan saw not calculation but recognition.

Late.

Useless.

Real.

Celeste said, “Marcus kept saying we were too far in to stop.”

“You could have stopped every day.”

“I know.”

“What do you want now?”

“To keep Marcus from going to prison.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“Of course.”

“He has children.”

“So did I.”

Celeste froze.

“So did you,” Ryan repeated. “You lived with one.”

Tears slid down her face.

Ryan stood.

The conference was over.

As he reached the door, Celeste said, “Ryan.”

He stopped.

“There’s one document Marcus doesn’t know I kept.”

Ryan turned.

“What?”

“The original Alder Crest account book.”

“Where?”

She looked at her attorney.

Then back at him.

“Graywater.”

Ryan felt his pulse change.

May you like

“Where?”

Celeste whispered, “Inside Emma’s piano.”
