Chapter 13 - Blue Harbor

Blue Harbor Investigations no longer existed.

Its former owner did.

Gavin Ross lived in coastal Maine.

He denied knowing Vanessa.

Until Keene showed him the wire transfer.

Then he asked for a lawyer.

Federal financial investigators had now joined the case because of the Swiss accounts.

Gavin negotiated.

He admitted Vanessa hired Blue Harbor to locate Caroline.

“We found her.”

Adrian gripped the table.

“Where?”

“Rockland.”

“When?”

“About eighteen months after she disappeared.”

“Was she alive?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s eyes closed.

Caroline had been alive only eighteen months ago.

Gavin continued.

“She was working under another name.”

“What name?”

“Anna Bennett.”

“Doing what?”

“Bookkeeping for a marine supply company.”

“Did you speak to her?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

Gavin hesitated.

“No.”

“Charles?”

“No.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Then what happened?”

“We surveilled her for six days.”

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“We were private investigators hired to locate an adult.”

“You knew she was missing nationally.”

“We knew.”

“And you took Vanessa’s money.”

Gavin looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“What happened on day six?”

“She disappeared.”

Adrian stared.

“Again?”

“We arrived at her apartment. Gone.”

“Signs of struggle?”

“No.”

“Did she know you were watching?”

“Probably.”

“Why?”

Gavin opened his old file.

On the fifth day Caroline had left a note beneath the windshield wiper of the investigator’s car.

Tell Vanessa she still hasn’t found the right copy.

Adrian almost smiled.

Even hunted, Caroline had fought.

Gavin continued.

“We told Vanessa.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked what copy.”

“And?”

“We didn’t know.”

“Then why seven hundred fifty thousand dollars?”

Gavin looked at Keene.

“Because she wanted the report destroyed.”

“Did you destroy it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Everyone in this conspiracy seemed to understand insurance.

Gavin surrendered photographs.

Caroline walking beside Rockland Harbor.

Caroline buying groceries.

Caroline mailing a package.

Caroline alive.

Adrian touched one image.

She looked thinner.

Her hair shorter.

But it was her.

Sophie was shown only one photograph after a therapist approved it.

She touched Caroline’s face.

“Mommy got short hair.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Maybe she liked it.”

Sophie considered.

“I like long.”

Adrian laughed through tears.

The package Caroline mailed became the next clue.

Gavin’s surveillance log recorded the post office and approximate time.

Postal records did not preserve address details that long.

But security footage from an adjacent bank showed Caroline exiting with a padded envelope.

On the side, handwritten:

R. SLOAN.

Rebecca stared at the photograph.

“Me?”

“Did you receive anything?” Keene asked.

“No.”

They searched Rebecca’s old office mail logs.

A package from Maine had arrived.

It was signed for by a temporary receptionist.

Then transferred internally.

Recipient:

Rebecca Sloan.

Delivery status:

Forwarded to Whitmore Hospitality legal department per executive legal-hold request.

Adrian slowly turned toward Vanessa’s former position.

“She intercepted it.”

Rebecca nodded.

Vanessa had been general counsel.

Keene obtained archived mailroom security.

A staff note survived.

Package collected by D. Price.

Damon.

During interrogation, Damon initially denied remembering.

Then prosecutors reminded him cooperation affected sentencing.

He broke.

“Yes.”

“What did you do with it?”

“Gave it to Vanessa.”

“What was inside?”

“I didn’t open it.”

Keene confronted Vanessa.

This time, evidence surrounded her.

The assault on Sophie.

Caroline’s necklace.

Disposable phone.

Swiss payments.

Intercepted package.

Vanessa’s attorney requested a break.

Vanessa refused.

She looked at Adrian through the interrogation-room glass.

She could not see him.

But she knew he was there.

“I opened the package.”

Keene said nothing.

“There was a flash drive.”

“What was on it?”

“Financial records.”

“What else?”

“A video.”

Adrian’s heart pounded.

“What video?” Keene asked.

Vanessa stared at the table.

“Caroline.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Vanessa’s voice became quiet.

“She said Charles had ordered Damon to follow her from Ashcroft. She said she had copied the Geneva records.”

“And?”

“She said she had proof Charles was planning something bigger.”

“What?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“The Midtown Crown deal.”

Adrian knew it.

A $1.2 billion redevelopment planned around three Whitmore properties.

The deal remained active today.

Charles had pushed aggressively to close it.

Vanessa continued.

“Caroline said the project debt would bankrupt the company if occupancy fell even ten percent.”

Adrian stared.

That was impossible.

Unless Charles had hidden side guarantees.

Keene asked, “Where is the flash drive?”

Vanessa looked up.

“I gave it to Charles.”

“Where is it now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Caroline say where she was going?”

“No.”

“Did she mention Sophie?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Vanessa whispered, “She said she was coming home.”

Adrian’s breath stopped.

“When?”

“Soon.”

“What did you do?”

Vanessa looked toward the mirrored glass.

May you like

For the first time, her composure disappeared completely.

“I told Charles.”
