Chapter 16 - The Day Adrian Lost Everything

Charles struck before disappearing.

At 9:00 a.m., the Whitmore Hospitality board voted.

Adrian was removed permanently as chief executive.

Seven votes to two.

The company announced Charles would remain chairman “remotely” until legal questions were resolved.

Adrian lost executive authority.

His company email.

His office.

His security access.

Then came court.

Vanessa’s lawyers presented photographs of the two slaps Adrian had given her.

She had filed a civil protection petition and assault complaint.

Adrian did not deny striking her.

The judge issued a temporary no-contact order between Adrian and Vanessa.

That alone did not threaten Sophie.

Then Charles’s attorneys introduced a sworn statement claiming Adrian’s emotional instability endangered the child and the trust.

Worse, they produced audio.

Adrian’s furious phone call after Sophie was photographed.

If anyone comes near her, I will bury all of you.

Another clip.

I swear I’ll destroy Charles.

Another.

Vanessa deserves whatever happens next.

Adrian stared.

Real words.

Ripped from context.

His lawyer argued.

Rebecca argued.

The judge did not remove Sophie from Adrian.

But she temporarily appointed an independent guardian ad litem and ordered that Sophie remain away from hotel properties connected to the criminal investigation.

Caroline’s trust voting interest remained frozen.

Charles’s strategy had worked.

Adrian could not use the shares.

He could not control the company.

He could not enter the Whitmore Grand without permission.

And because the criminal investigation was active, police told him not to travel to Maine after Charles.

Adrian sat outside court.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

Rebecca sat beside him.

“What now?”

“I don’t know.”

“You always know.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“That was the problem.”

Sophie stayed with him.

That mattered.

But every other structure of his life had collapsed.

That evening another blow arrived.

Nina Patel called.

“Midtown Crown closed.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

“Charles’s lawyers used delegated authority signed before the board vote.”

“How?”

“They refinanced through an offshore lender.”

“Amount?”

“Eight hundred sixty million.”

Adrian felt sick.

“What collateral?”

“Five hotel operating companies.”

If the deal failed, Whitmore could lose nearly a third of its cash-generating portfolio.

Charles had turned escape into a financial detonation.

Adrian called the board chair.

No answer.

Called lenders.

No authority.

Called company counsel.

They refused to speak.

Powerlessness was new.

And brutal.

Then Vanessa called Rebecca.

Not Adrian.

The no-contact order remained active.

Rebecca put her on speaker with consent.

Vanessa sounded terrified.

“Charles is going to kill Caroline.”

Adrian stood.

Rebecca said, “Explain.”

“He found her.”

Silence.

Adrian’s entire body went cold.

“How do you know?” Rebecca asked.

“Blue Harbor had an old contact in Maine. Charles paid him last month.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“Then why say kill?”

“Because Caroline has the only original document that can unwind Midtown Crown.”

“What document?”

“A side letter.”

Nina leaned closer to the speaker.

“What side letter?”

Vanessa answered.

“Charles guaranteed the loan using assets he didn’t legally control. Caroline copied the lender agreement and obtained proof the lender knew.”

“That could trigger fraud claims,” Nina said.

“And invalidate parts of the collateral structure.”

Adrian whispered, “Where is Caroline?”

Vanessa cried.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca’s voice hardened.

“Stop saying that.”

“I only know Charles flew north.”

“We know that too.”

Vanessa inhaled.

“There’s a place.”

“What place?”

“A Whitmore fishing lodge.”

Adrian froze.

“My grandfather’s?”

“Charles bought it through a shell company after the family sold it.”

Adrian remembered childhood summers.

Lake Mercer Lodge.

Remote woods outside Rangeley, Maine.

No cell service in many areas.

Private airstrip forty miles away.

Rebecca asked, “Why would Caroline go there?”

Vanessa whispered, “Because that’s where she hid the last copy.”

Adrian stood.

Police needed warrants.

Federal coordination.

Maine authorities.

Hours.

Charles already had a head start.

Detective Keene called moments later.

“Do not go.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“If she’s there—”

“Do not go.”

“You’re asking me to wait again.”

“I’m asking you not to destroy an active operation.”

Adrian looked at Sophie sleeping down the hall.

Three years ago he had reacted emotionally and believed Vanessa.

Now emotion told him to run.

Evidence told him to coordinate.

He made the harder choice.

“Tell me what you need.”

Keene paused.

“Finally.”

Within an hour, federal agents, Maine State Police and local authorities were moving.

Adrian remained behind.

At 11:47 p.m., Keene called.

“They reached the lodge.”

Adrian stood.

“And?”

“No Charles.”

His hope fell.

“No Caroline?”

Keene paused.

“There are signs someone was there very recently.”

“What signs?”

“A fire still warm.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Keene’s voice changed.

“Caroline’s compass symbol is carved into the kitchen table.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

May you like

Under it, someone had carved three words.

HE FOUND ME.
