Chapter 8 - Adrian’s Mistake

Adrian lost control.
Again.
He called Damon.
No answer.
He called Charles.
Charles answered.
“You threatening my daughter now?”
Charles sounded tired.
“Think before you speak.”
“Damon sent me a photo of Sophie.”
“How would I know?”
“Because he works for you.”
“He worked for the company.”
Adrian shouted, “If anyone comes near her—”
“Listen to yourself.”
Charles’s calmness made Adrian angrier.
“You sound unstable.”
Adrian froze.
Charles continued.
“Exactly what the board is documenting.”
The call ended.
Adrian realized too late that Charles had provoked him.
Worse, Adrian had called from his normal line.
If Charles recorded it, his rage could be used against him.
Rebecca confirmed it an hour later.
“He filed your voicemail with the court.”
Adrian stared.
“What court?”
“His attorneys are seeking temporary control over Caroline’s business interests, claiming you’re emotionally incapable of protecting Sophie’s trust.”
“He baited me.”
“And you took it.”
Adrian walked away.
Rebecca did not soften.
“You keep giving them weapons.”
He turned.
“My child was threatened.”
“Yes.”
“And I’m supposed to remain calm?”
“You’re supposed to remain useful.”
That hurt.
Because Caroline had said similar things.
Adrian looked toward Sophie sleeping on Rebecca’s office sofa.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Stop trying to win every fight personally.”
He hated the advice.
He followed it.
For the next forty-eight hours, Adrian did not contact Charles or Vanessa.
He hired independent security for Sophie.
He voluntarily surrendered company access during the board investigation.
He reported his two slaps against Vanessa to police and gave a full statement.
Vanessa pressed charges.
Adrian did not fight the factual basis.
“She slapped my daughter and threatened her with a heated appliance,” he told investigators.
“I reacted physically. I should not have.”
The prosecutor ultimately treated the matter as a misdemeanor assault allegation pending review.
Headlines became brutal.
WHITMORE HEIR ADMITS STRIKING FIANCÉE.
His company stock dropped eleven percent in two days.
Banks called.
Investors demanded answers.
Charles looked stronger.
Vanessa appeared publicly with makeup covering her bruises.
She said:
“I remain deeply concerned about Sophie and Adrian’s emotional state.”
Adrian watched from Rebecca’s office.
He nearly threw the remote.
Sophie walked in.
“Daddy?”
He turned off the television.
“Yes?”
“Is Vanessa sad?”
He hesitated.
“She may be.”
“Because you hit her?”
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
“Was that bad?”
He crouched.
“Yes.”
“But she hit me.”
“I know.”
“Then why was yours bad?”
Adrian took a long breath.
“Because hurting someone because you’re angry doesn’t become right just because they did something wrong first.”
Sophie thought about this.
“Then Vanessa was wrong too.”
“Yes.”
“More wrong?”
Adrian almost smiled.
“This isn’t a contest.”
She looked unconvinced.
Then climbed into his lap.
“Mommy didn’t like contests.”
He froze.
“How do you remember that?”
“She said when I cried because I lost blocks.”
Adrian held her tighter.
Sophie had memories he had never asked for because talking about Caroline hurt too much.
His avoidance had cost him pieces of his wife.
That night he asked Sophie gently, “Did Mommy ever say anything else about Milo?”
Sophie nodded.
“She said if she went away, Bunny knows the hotel.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
They examined Milo.
The microSD had come from one seam.
Another seam along the belly felt strange.
Rebecca carefully opened it.
Inside was a narrow strip of paper wrapped in plastic.
Three numbers.
19-12-23.
Room 1912.
Room 23?
No.
Adrian stared.
Then he remembered old hotel engineering codes.
19-12-23 meant:
Floor 19.
Service room 12.
Access node 23.
The old passage map.
Elias was still recovering but confirmed it.
“Node 23 is a junction behind the ballroom.”
“What’s there?”
“An old document lift.”
“Where does it go?”
“Basement archive.”
Adrian and Keene followed the passage under warrant.
At node 23 they found a mechanical lift shaft.
Inside the rusted carriage sat a metal document box.
Caroline had hidden it there.
The lock was broken.
Someone had opened it recently.
Most contents were gone.
But one envelope remained beneath the lining.
Addressed to Adrian.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Vanessa kissing Charles Whitmore.
On the back Caroline had written:
They are not lovers.
They are partners.
Follow the money through Geneva.
Adrian stared at the image.
Keene asked, “Geneva?”
Adrian whispered, “Whitmore Hospitality has a Swiss insurance subsidiary.”

The company handled high-value property risk.
And Charles controlled it personally.
