Chapter 17 - The Last Road North

Police found tire tracks leaving Lake Mercer Lodge.

Two vehicles.

One belonged to Charles’s rental company.

The second was unknown.

Snow had begun overnight, obscuring direction.

Inside the lodge investigators found Caroline’s recent fingerprints.

Fresh food.

Medication.

A laptop charger.

She had been living there.

Maybe weeks.

Maybe months.

Adrian stared at photographs Keene sent.

A woman’s coat.

Books.

A framed photograph of Sophie printed from an online school page.

Caroline had watched her daughter from afar.

On the kitchen shelf sat twenty-three letters addressed to Sophie.

Never mailed.

Adrian could not read them yet.

Keene found another item.

A satellite phone.

Broken deliberately.

The last outgoing call went to Rebecca’s office two days earlier.

No connection.

Charles had found Caroline before she could reach them.

Road cameras showed a black SUV leaving Rangeley at 9:18 p.m.

Charles was visible driving.

A second figure sat in the passenger seat.

Female.

Short hair.

Caroline.

Alive.

Adrian cried when he saw the still image.

Not quietly.

Not elegantly.

Three years of grief and shame collapsed inside him.

Rebecca held his shoulder.

“She’s alive.”

Adrian nodded.

“Sophie.”

They told her with a therapist present.

“Mommy is alive?”

“We believe so.”

“Can she come home?”

Adrian’s voice broke.

“We’re trying.”

Sophie hugged Milo.

“I told you.”

Adrian laughed through tears.

“You did.”

The SUV was traced south.

Charles was not fleeing Canada.

He was returning toward New York.

Why?

Nina Patel supplied the answer.

Midtown Crown’s lender demanded physical delivery of an original side letter by midnight the following day.

Without it, the lender reserved rights to suspend funding.

Charles had taken Caroline because she knew where the original was.

He needed her.

That meant she was alive for a reason.

It also created a deadline.

Police established road surveillance.

At 4:30 p.m., the SUV appeared near Albany.

Then vanished after switching plates in a parking structure.

Charles knew security.

Damon had taught him.

Vanessa asked to cooperate formally.

Prosecutors offered no immunity for Sophie’s assault, evidence tampering or financial crimes.

They offered consideration for substantial assistance.

Vanessa accepted.

Her motive was partly survival.

Partly revenge against Charles.

Maybe a fragment of guilt.

She gave investigators a list of properties Charles used privately.

One stood out.

A decommissioned Whitmore conference center in the Catskills.

It had a private records vault.

Caroline had hidden documents there years earlier.

Charles knew.

Maine police coordinated with New York.

Keene prepared a tactical operation.

Adrian was excluded.

This time he did not argue.

Then Sophie said something unexpected.

“Mommy won’t put it in the vault.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“The paper.”

“How do you know?”

“Mommy said grown-ups always look in boxes.”

Sophie touched Milo.

“She hides things in toys.”

Adrian stared.

The original microSD.

The paper code.

Milo.

Caroline had always used ordinary objects.

“What did she hide at the lodge?”

Police reviewed evidence photographs.

Children’s toys?

None.

Then Adrian remembered his grandfather’s fishing lodge.

A carved wooden loon sat above the fireplace.

It appeared in an old family photograph.

In the new police images, the loon was gone.

Keene alerted teams.

They searched the lodge grounds.

Found fresh footprints leading to a boathouse.

Inside a storage locker sat the carved loon.

Hollow.

Inside were documents.

The original lender side letter.

Copies of Swiss account records.

And a notarized affidavit signed by Caroline six weeks earlier.

Charles never found it.

He had abducted Caroline for information she no longer carried.

That changed the confrontation.

Nina immediately sent certified copies to the lender and federal regulators.

Midtown Crown funding was suspended.

Whitmore Hospitality issued an emergency market notice.

Charles’s financial plan began collapsing.

Rebecca smiled for the first time in days.

“He has no reason to hold her now.”

Keene looked grim.

“That can make him more dangerous.”

At 7:22 p.m., Charles called Adrian.

Directly.

“You ruined everything.”

Adrian pressed record.

“No.”

“You sent the documents.”

“Yes.”

“You always were ungrateful.”

“Where is Caroline?”

Charles laughed softly.

“You finally care?”

“I always cared.”

“No. You cared when it was comfortable.”

The words hurt because they were partly true.

Charles continued.

“Caroline knew you were weak.”

“Where is she?”

“You want her?”

“Yes.”

“Come to the place where this started.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Whitmore Grand?”

“Midnight.”

“Police will be there.”

“Then you’ll never see her.”

The line ended.

Adrian immediately sent the recording to Keene.

She called.

“You are not going alone.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked toward Sophie.

This confrontation would not be solved by rage.

Not this time.

At 11:40 p.m., police surrounded the Whitmore Grand discreetly.

Adrian entered through the main lobby.

Three years earlier, fabricated footage had shown Caroline walking out through those doors.

Tonight Adrian walked in to bring her back.
