Chapter 2 - The Woman on the Memory Card

Elias survived.
Before the ambulance arrived, hotel security sealed the dressing room.
That worried Adrian immediately.
The order had not come from him.
“Who authorized lockdown?” he demanded.
Damon Price, Whitmore Grand’s director of security, answered calmly.
“Ms. Crane.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She sat near the mirror holding ice against her cheek.
“You gave an order after I told you not to leave my sight?”
“I was protecting Sophie.”
Adrian laughed without humor.
“You were holding a burning straightener beside her face twenty minutes ago.”
Damon glanced toward Vanessa.
Adrian saw it.
A fraction of a second.
Recognition.
Communication.
“Damon,” Adrian said, “give me your access card.”
“Sir?”
“Now.”
Damon hesitated.
Adrian held out his hand.
“I own this hotel.”
“Whitmore Hospitality Holdings owns it.”
“And I control fifty-one percent of Whitmore Hospitality.”
“For now,” Vanessa said quietly.
Adrian turned.
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing.”
He took Damon’s card.
“Leave.”
Damon did.
Adrian locked the dressing-room door.
Sophie sat curled on the sofa with Milo pressed against her chest.
Adrian connected the microSD card to his laptop using a photography adapter from the suite office.
One video file appeared.
Date:
October 14, three years earlier.
Two days before Caroline vanished.
Adrian stared at the file.
Vanessa stood.
“Don’t.”
He clicked PLAY.
Caroline Whitmore appeared.
Alive.
Adrian’s chest tightened so suddenly he could barely breathe.
She stood inside this exact dressing room.
Her brown hair was tied back.
She wore the cream blouse Adrian remembered from Sophie’s second birthday dinner.
Caroline looked directly into the camera.
“If Adrian is watching this, then something happened before I could tell him myself.”
Adrian gripped the table.
Sophie climbed down from the sofa.
“Mommy.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Caroline continued.
“I found transfers from Whitmore Renovation Services into four consulting companies that do not appear to have employees.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She said nothing.
Caroline named the companies.
Hartwell Advisory.
North Coast Design.
Merritt Strategic.
Calderon Services.
Adrian knew all four.
They had received tens of millions in renovation contracts.
Caroline continued.
“The invoices were approved by Charles Whitmore and reviewed by Vanessa Crane.”
Adrian went rigid.
Charles.
His uncle.
Chairman of Whitmore Hospitality.
The man who had raised Adrian after Adrian’s father died.
Vanessa whispered, “Caroline misunderstood.”
The video continued.
“I estimate at least forty-two million dollars has been diverted.”
Adrian’s face drained.
Caroline leaned closer to the camera.
“Vanessa knows I found it.”
The room became silent.
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked away.
Caroline continued.
“She told me I would destroy Adrian if I exposed the fraud because several approvals carry his electronic signature.”
Adrian whispered, “What?”
Vanessa said quickly, “She was paranoid.”
Onscreen Caroline reached down.
She held up printed emails.
“I checked the signature logs. Adrian did not personally authorize at least eleven transactions.”
Adrian remembered those years.
Expansion.
Seven properties purchased in eighteen months.
He had delegated enormous power.
To Charles.
To Vanessa.
To finance.
Caroline’s eyes were tired.
“I made a mistake too. I waited too long because I believed I could collect enough evidence to protect Adrian from the scandal.”
Sophie moved closer to the laptop.
Caroline’s voice softened.
“If Sophie ever sees this, sweetheart, none of this is your fault.”
Sophie’s face crumpled.
Adrian lifted her onto his lap.
Caroline continued.
“There is another copy of the evidence inside the hotel.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
Adrian raised one hand.
“Don’t.”
Caroline said, “Elias knows where the first key is.”
Adrian’s heart pounded.
“And the second key…”
The video distorted.
Static.
Then returned.
Caroline was no longer alone.
Someone stood behind her.
Only part of the figure was visible.
A woman.
Green silk blouse.
Vanessa.
Sophie whispered, “That’s her.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
Onscreen Vanessa said, “You shouldn’t be recording.”
Caroline turned.
“You shouldn’t be stealing.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
“You think Adrian will choose you?”
“This isn’t about my marriage.”
“It always is.”
Caroline stepped toward her.
“You’ve spent two years telling my husband I’m suspicious because I’m threatened by you.”
“You are threatened by me.”
“No.”
Caroline’s voice became quiet.
“I’m threatened by what he becomes when he listens to you.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Caroline continued.
“If anything happens to me, Sophie gets my shares.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What shares?”
“My father’s original stake.”
Adrian looked sharply at the laptop.
Caroline’s father had helped finance the Whitmore Grand’s expansion decades earlier.
Caroline held eighteen percent of Whitmore Hospitality in a family trust.
Adrian had assumed those shares would pass through her estate.
Caroline smiled coldly at Vanessa.
“And Adrian won’t control them.”
Vanessa went still.
“What?”
“I changed the trust.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Caroline continued.
“If I die or disappear under suspicious circumstances, voting authority goes to an independent fiduciary until Sophie turns twenty-five.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“You did that without telling Adrian?”
“I did it because Adrian trusts the wrong people.”
The video shook.
Then Vanessa said something that made Adrian’s skin go cold.
“You’d better hope he never finds out how right you are.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Sophie whispered, “Daddy?”
Adrian realized tears were running down his face.
He closed the laptop.
Vanessa spoke first.
“You need context.”
Adrian stood.
“Context?”
“Caroline was preparing to divorce you.”
He froze.
Vanessa watched the pain land.
“You didn’t know?”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Get out.”
“She had a lawyer. She was going to take Sophie and leave.”
“Get out.”
“She thought you were involved in the theft.”
Adrian slammed his palm onto the table.
“GET OUT!”
Sophie jumped.
Adrian immediately regretted shouting.
He crouched.
“I’m sorry.”
Vanessa stood.
“You can throw me out, but you need to understand something.”
Adrian looked at her.
“If Caroline’s trust amendment exists, your control of Whitmore Hospitality may already be invalid.”
Adrian stared.
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“Which means Charles will move against you the moment he learns you found that card.”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Charles Whitmore.
Adrian looked at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
She smiled sadly.
“He already knows.”
