Chapter 15 - The Night Caroline Came Back

Sophie remembered fragments.

A woman emerging from the wardrobe.

Short hair.

Cold hands.

Crying.

Milo.

“She kissed my bunny,” Sophie said.

Adrian sat beside her on the carpet.

“Did she say where she was going?”

“No.”

“Did she say anything about Daddy?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said Daddy has to wake up.”

Adrian looked away.

Even then Caroline had hoped.

Sophie continued.

“She put something in Milo.”

“The card?”

“Maybe.”

“When did she leave?”

“When the knocking came.”

Adrian turned.

“What knocking?”

“Three knocks.”

The same sound.

The passage signal.

Someone had come for Caroline.

“Who?”

“I hid.”

“What did you hear?”

“A man.”

“Do you know who?”

Sophie shook her head.

“He said, ‘Charles is waiting.’”

Adrian’s face hardened.

Caroline had returned.

Visited Sophie secretly.

Hidden the microSD inside Milo.

Then followed someone into the passage.

Maybe voluntarily.

Maybe because she had no choice.

Elias examined old maintenance logs from the night of the false fire alarm.

One unusual entry appeared.

Service elevator B manually overridden at 12:18 a.m.

Authorized credential:

D. PRICE.

Damon.

Confronted again, Damon finally admitted more.

“I took Caroline downstairs.”

“Where?” Keene asked.

“Loading dock.”

“Was Charles there?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Damon rubbed his face.

“Caroline got into Charles’s car.”

“Willingly?”

“She wanted something.”

“What?”

“Her original files.”

“Why would Charles have them?”

“He said he’d trade.”

“For what?”

“The trust amendment.”

Adrian understood.

Caroline had retrieved the original.

Charles wanted it destroyed.

He offered evidence in exchange.

“Where did they go?”

Damon stared at the table.

“The old river warehouse.”

Whitmore Hospitality owned a disused logistics property along the Hudson.

Police searched.

The building was nearly empty.

But in an upstairs office they found traces of old occupancy.

Coffee cups.

A broken recorder.

A dried blood spot beneath a desk.

Forensics later matched it to Caroline through personal items preserved from the investigation.

Adrian sat in his car when Keene told him.

“Blood?”

“Small amount.”

“Was she killed there?”

“We don’t know.”

They found no body.

No evidence of fatal injury.

They found something else.

A bullet lodged in a wall.

Adrian went pale.

Keene warned, “Do not jump to conclusions.”

“Someone fired a gun.”

“Yes.”

“At a place Caroline was taken.”

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The next discovery came from the broken recorder.

Its memory chip was damaged but recoverable.

Audio specialists extracted eighty-seven seconds.

Charles’s voice.

“Give me the amendment.”

Caroline:

“Give me the files.”

Charles:

“You think Adrian will thank you?”

Caroline:

“This isn’t for Adrian.”

Charles:

“Then who?”

Caroline:

“My daughter.”

A crash.

Then Charles:

“You’re destroying the family.”

Caroline laughed.

“No. I’m stopping you from selling it.”

Then another voice.

Damon.

“Sir, put the gun down.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Charles:

“She’s leaving with nothing.”

Caroline:

“Watch me.”

A gunshot.

Sophie was not allowed anywhere near the recording.

Adrian listened twice.

Then refused again.

Damon cried when Keene played it.

“You fired?” she asked.

“No.”

“Charles?”

“Yes.”

“At Caroline?”

“He fired into the wall.”

“Why?”

“To scare her.”

“Did he shoot her?”

“No.”

“What happened to her blood?”

“She cut her hand on broken glass.”

“Then where did she go?”

Damon answered.

“I helped her escape.”

Keene stared.

“What?”

“After Charles fired, I realized he’d lost it.”

Damon wiped his eyes.

“I opened the back service door.”

“Where did Caroline go?”

“She ran toward the river road.”

“Did Charles follow?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I was done.”

Adrian whispered behind the glass, “So Charles was the last person with her.”

Keene nodded.

The case against Charles was becoming serious.

Then everything collapsed.

At 4:00 p.m., federal agents executed search warrants on Charles’s office and home.

Charles was gone.

His private jet had departed Teterboro forty minutes earlier.

Destination filed:

Montreal.

But the flight changed course after takeoff.

The transponder later showed it heading toward a private airfield in northern Maine.

Near the last place Caroline had lived.
