Chapter 12 - The House With the Locked Nursery

Daniel’s mother had not died in a hospital.

Evelyn Cross died in the Pacific Heights house eighteen months after Anna disappeared.

Cancer.

Daniel remembered Charles closing most of the second floor afterward.

Including the old nursery.

The address Marcus left belonged to that house.

Maya hated the idea immediately.

“It could be bait.”

“It probably is.”

“You cannot break into Charles’s house.”

“It’s partly mine.”

“No. The property sits in a family LLC. You have no possessory right to walk into locked rooms.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Anna said proof might be in my own house.”

“When?”

Maya froze.

Daniel pulled out the storage-letter copy.

Anna had written:

If they take me, remember that Charles hides truth where family is least willing to look.

At the bottom, barely visible, was another line.

EVELYN KNEW.

Daniel’s mother.

They obtained no warrant.

They had no probable cause tied to the residence.

Maya told Daniel to wait.

He did not.

That was his next mistake.

Late that evening, Daniel used an old key to enter through the garden door.

The alarm code still worked.

That should have warned him.

He climbed the staircase.

The nursery door was locked.

He forced it.

Inside, white sheets covered old furniture.

The crib Lucas never used stood beneath the window.

Daniel’s throat closed.

He remembered Anna folding tiny clothes there.

Evelyn had loved her.

At least Daniel thought she had.

Behind the crib hung a framed watercolor moon.

He took it down.

A wall safe sat behind it.

Daniel knew his mother’s old four-digit code.

His birth year.

The safe opened.

Inside were three folders.

A flash drive.

And a letter addressed to Daniel.

His hands shook.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to make Charles confess before I died.

Daniel sat on the floor.

Evelyn had known.

She wrote that she discovered suspicious transfers after Anna vanished.

She confronted Charles.

He admitted moving money into North Quay to hide losses from a disastrous private investment.

Marcus altered the records.

Charles believed Anna would expose everything.

He planned to discredit her until she surrendered the child and evidence.

Evelyn begged him to stop.

He threatened to place Daniel under a conservatorship-style corporate incapacity review and destroy Anna publicly.

Then came the sentence Daniel read twice.

Charles told me Lucas must remain “unconfirmed” until the trust transition passes.

Daniel looked toward the nursery window.

A floorboard creaked behind him.

Lights snapped on.

Charles stood in the doorway.

Two security guards behind him.

“I wondered how long Marcus’s little clue would take.”

Daniel rose.

“You knew I’d come.”

Charles looked at the open safe.

“I knew you still confuse emotion with entitlement.”

Daniel held his mother’s letter.

“She knew.”

“She was dying.”

“She knew what you did.”

“She knew fragments.”

“You framed Anna.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“You entered my home illegally.”

“This was Mom’s room.”

“This is property owned by Cross Family Holdings.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“There it is. Property.”

Charles stepped forward.

“Put the documents down.”

“No.”

“One call and the police will arrest you.”

“Make it.”

Charles studied him.

“You think being arrested again helps Ethan?”

That stopped Daniel.

Charles saw it.

“You think a juvenile court will give a battered child to a man charged twice in one week?”

Daniel’s grip loosened.

The security guards moved closer.

Charles held out his hand.

“Give me the flash drive.”

“No.”

“Then lose your son.”

Daniel’s anger surged.

He wanted to hit Charles.

He imagined it.

Then Ethan’s voice returned.

Not your fists.

Daniel backed away.

“I’m leaving.”

“With nothing.”

Daniel slipped Evelyn’s letter inside his coat.

Charles nodded to the guards.

They blocked him.

Daniel’s phone was already recording video openly in his hand.

“You touch me, it’s on camera.”

Charles smiled.

“So you do learn.”

Police arrived seven minutes later.

Charles pressed charges for trespass and forced entry.

Daniel was arrested.

The flash drive remained in the safe.

The letter was seized temporarily as disputed property.

By morning, headlines were worse.

DANIEL CROSS ARRESTED AGAIN.

DISGRACED CEO BREAKS INTO FATHER’S HOME.

Maya met him after release.

She was furious.

“I told you to wait.”

“I found evidence.”

“You found evidence in a way that may make it unusable and gave Charles a narrative that you are spiraling.”

“I copied part of the letter with my phone.”

“Good. Also stupid.”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I thought I could fix it quickly.”

“That is your disease.”

He looked up.

“Thinking rules become optional when your intentions feel important.”

Daniel had no reply.

Maya’s expression softened only slightly.

“And now there is a consequence.”

“What?”

She handed him a family court order.

Marcus Bell had been granted temporary physical custody of Lily for seventy-two hours pending an emergency hearing.

The court cited Daniel’s escalating conduct and Anna’s continued absence.

Ethan would remain in foster care.

The siblings were to be separated that evening.

May you like

Daniel closed his eyes.

His mistake had given Marcus exactly what he wanted.
