Chapter 13 - The Separation

Ethan screamed when they took Lily.
Not cried.
Screamed.
He wrapped both arms around her bassinet while Renee tried to explain the court order.
“No!”
“Ethan—”
“No!”
Marcus stood near the door with his attorney.
Daniel had been ordered not to attend the transfer after the previous night’s arrest.
He watched through a video call from Maya’s office.
It was worse than being there.
“Don’t give her to him!” Ethan shouted.
Renee knelt.
“Ethan, listen to me. This is temporary.”
“Adults say temporary when they mean they already decided!”
Lily began crying.
Ethan picked her up.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Let me—”
“Don’t touch her!”
Marcus stopped.
Renee looked toward the county counsel.
Everyone in the room hated the situation.
But the order was valid.
Ethan whispered into Lily’s hair.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel turned away from the screen.
Maya said nothing.
When he looked back, Marcus was carrying Lily.
She reached over his shoulder toward Ethan.
The front door closed.
Ethan collapsed.
Daniel ended the call.
“I did this.”
Maya did not reassure him.
“Your conduct helped Marcus.”
“I need to get Lily back.”
“You need to stop thinking you personally move every piece.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What do we have?”
“Evelyn’s letter photographs. Anna’s recording. The altered ledger. North Quay ownership. Marcus’s false café statement.”
“Not enough.”
“Not yet.”
Detective Ruiz entered.
“We got something.”
A court-authorized review of the motel’s nearby traffic-camera network had identified another vehicle following Marcus’s sedan three nights earlier.
A van registered to Harbor Recovery Services.
Daniel stood.
“Anna was transferred.”
“Possibly.”
Ruiz continued.
“We also interviewed a former nurse from Harbor Recovery. She says Dr. Keene occasionally admitted private patients under initials only.”
“Against their will?”
“She won’t say without counsel.”
Maya looked at Daniel.
“That’s a crack.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Ruiz gestured.
“Speaker.”
Daniel answered.
Silence.
Then Ethan’s voice.
Not Anna.
“Daniel?”
He was crying.
“What happened?”
“Renee let me use the phone.”
Daniel lowered himself into a chair.
“I’m here.”
“Lily’s gone.”
“I know.”
“You said courts were safer.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I said we had to use them. I didn’t say we would always win.”
“I hate this.”
“I know.”
“I hate Marcus.”
Daniel hesitated.
“You can be angry.”
“I hate you too.”
The words hit.
Daniel breathed through them.
“You’re allowed.”
Ethan began crying harder.
Daniel did not say forgive me.
He did not say I’ll fix everything.
He said, “Stay with Mrs. Greene tonight. Eat something. Sleep if you can. Tomorrow Maya is going back to court.”
“What about Lily?”
“We are not stopping.”
Silence.
Then Ethan whispered, “Mom wouldn’t stop.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at the photograph of Anna on Maya’s desk.
“She never did.”
The next morning Cross Meridian’s board formally removed Daniel as chief executive.
Marcus became CEO.
Charles issued a statement about restoring stability.
Daniel watched it from a courthouse corridor.
“Thirty years,” he said.
Maya looked at him.
“What?”
“My father spent thirty years teaching me the company was my identity.”
“And now?”
Daniel looked toward the family courtroom where Marcus was fighting for Lily.
“Now I know exactly what it isn’t.”
The hearing went badly.
Marcus’s attorneys presented Daniel’s two arrests, the viral assault, and evidence of his forced entry into Charles’s home.
Maya presented the financial records and argued Marcus was implicated in a long-running fraud.
The judge found the allegations serious but not yet enough to declare Marcus an immediate danger to Lily.
Temporary custody remained with him for another five days.
Ethan was not present.
Daniel was almost grateful.
Outside court, Marcus approached.
“You could end this.”
Daniel stared.
“How?”
“Stop the trust challenge. Give Charles voting control back. Sign a declaration that Anna’s records are unreliable.”
“And Lily?”
“She stays safe.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Is that a threat?”
Marcus smiled.
“It’s a family settlement.”
Daniel took one step forward.
Then stopped.
Marcus noticed.
“You really are trying.”
Daniel said, “You’re going to make one mistake you can’t negotiate away.”
Marcus leaned close.
“I already did.”
“What?”
“I loved Anna.”
Then he walked away.
That evening Ethan received a call from an unknown number at Mrs. Greene’s house.
He answered before she could stop him.
A woman whispered his name.
“Ethan.”
He froze.
“Mom?”
Anna began crying.
“Baby, listen carefully. Don’t ask questions.”
“Where are you?”
“Tell Daniel Marcus is moving Lily.”
“When?”
“Before dawn.”
“Where?”
Anna’s breathing became ragged.
“Blue Ridge.”
“What’s that?”
A man shouted in the background.
Anna whispered one final sentence.
May you like
“Tell Daniel not to make the same mistake twice.”
The line went dead.
