Chapter 16 - No More Running

Maya filed the emergency civil action at 6:12 a.m.

Anna Cross v. Charles Cross, Marcus Bell, and Cross Meridian Holdings.

Claims for fraud, false imprisonment, civil conspiracy, breach of fiduciary duty, and injunctive relief.

Daniel joined only where his interests were legally relevant.

For once, he was not the center.

That mattered.

At 9:00 a.m., a superior court judge heard argument on whether the noon asset sale should be temporarily restrained.

Charles appeared with six lawyers.

Marcus appeared separately.

Anna testified from a wheelchair.

Daniel sat behind Maya.

Charles stared at Anna as if she were an employee who had disappointed him.

Anna stared back.

Her attorney asked, “Why did you leave eight years ago?”

“Because Charles Cross framed me for theft and Daniel threatened to take my baby.”

Daniel shut his eyes briefly.

No hiding.

The attorney continued.

“Who altered the transaction records?”

“Marcus Bell.”

Marcus’s lawyer objected.

“Foundation.”

Sustained.

Anna continued only with what she personally knew.

“Marcus admitted it to me years later.”

Another objection.

The judge allowed limited testimony for state of mind, not truth of the underlying act.

Maya then introduced bank records independently showing Marcus’s user credentials altered the source field.

North Quay’s beneficial ownership record showed Charles owned the recipient entity.

Charles’s attorney argued the records reflected a legitimate internal transaction.

Maya asked, “Then why was Anna accused of stealing it?”

Silence.

The judge looked over the documents.

“What is the urgency?”

Maya presented the sale schedule.

“At noon, defendants intend to shift historic liabilities into a thinly capitalized subsidiary while transferring valuable operating assets to a buyer.”

Alder Ridge’s counsel protested.

The judge examined the indemnification schedule Anna had preserved.

Then came the trust evidence.

Ethan’s legally established parentage.

The independent fiduciary’s suspension of Charles’s voting proxy.

Charles’s attorney argued the asset sale had been approved before suspension.

Maya produced the board timestamp.

It had not.

Charles looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked away.

The judge issued a temporary restraining order.

The sale was frozen for fourteen days pending fuller evidence.

Daniel exhaled.

Charles did not move.

Outside the courtroom, he approached Anna.

Daniel started to stand.

Anna lifted one hand.

He stopped.

She wanted to face Charles herself.

Charles said, “You think this is victory?”

Anna’s voice was quiet.

“No.”

“You spent eight years hiding.”

“I spent eight years surviving what you paid people to do.”

“You stole my grandson.”

Anna’s eyes flashed.

“I saved my son.”

Charles glanced at Daniel.

“And look what he became without his father.”

Daniel flinched.

Anna did not.

“He became a child who protected an infant with his own body after your son hit him.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“That is Daniel’s shame, not mine.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his father.

“It is mine.”

Charles smiled faintly.

Daniel continued.

“But you taught me the language I used to excuse it.”

“Do not blame me for your temper.”

“I’m not.”

Charles’s smile disappeared.

“I’m blaming you for your crimes.”

For the first time, Daniel felt free of him.

Not because Charles had lost power.

Because Daniel had stopped needing Charles to carry Daniel’s guilt.

Detective Ruiz approached Marcus at the far end of the hall.

“Mr. Bell, we need to speak.”

Marcus’s attorney intervened.

Ruiz handed him a warrant.

Not an arrest warrant.

A warrant for Marcus’s phones and electronic devices connected to Anna’s confinement.

Marcus went pale.

Charles saw it.

That single glance between them ended their alliance.

Marcus whispered, “You said Keene destroyed everything.”

Charles hissed, “Shut up.”

Ruiz heard.

So did three attorneys.

Marcus realized it.

His face collapsed.

He looked at Anna.

“I can fix this.”

Anna laughed softly.

“No, Marcus.”

“I can tell them where the originals are.”

Charles turned.

“Do not.”

Marcus looked at him.

Years of fear, greed, resentment, and dependence passed across his face.

Then he looked back at Ruiz.

“I want my lawyer.”

His attorney said, “Good.”

Marcus added, “And I want to discuss cooperation.”

Charles’s face became murderous.

Daniel watched the old wolf realize one of his traps had closed on himself.
