Chapter 17 - What Marcus Sold

Marcus talked for six hours.

Not because he became good.

Because he became afraid.

Prosecutors made no promises beyond agreeing to hear his proffer.

His attorney insisted on that distinction.

Marcus gave them dates.

Accounts.

Storage locations.

Passwords.

He admitted altering the $4.8 million transfer record eight years earlier after Charles ordered him to disguise North Quay’s ownership.

He admitted signing the declaration portraying Anna as unstable.

He admitted tracking Anna after she fled.

Then came Lily.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I found Anna again three years ago.”

Anna sat behind the one-way glass with Ruiz and Maya.

Daniel was not allowed inside.

Marcus continued.

“She hated me.”

His attorney said nothing.

“I helped her anyway. I gave her money. Documents. We… became involved.”

Ruiz later summarized the proffer for Daniel.

Marcus and Anna had begun a relationship nearly two years earlier.

Lily was conceived.

Then Marcus’s fear returned.

Charles discovered unexplained withdrawals Marcus had made to support Anna.

He threatened to expose Marcus’s role in the old fraud unless Marcus revealed her location.

Marcus did.

For two million dollars and the promise of becoming CEO.

Daniel sat motionless.

“He sold her.”

Ruiz replied, “That’s the practical version.”

“What happened three nights ago?”

“Anna contacted Marcus because she believed Charles had finally located Ethan through school records. She wanted Marcus to help move Lily somewhere safe while she brought Ethan to you.”

Daniel looked up.

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ruiz handed him Anna’s statement.

She had researched Daniel’s schedule.

Every year, on the anniversary of Cross Meridian’s founding, Daniel attended a private dinner at Marrow House beside the night market.

Anna knew he would be there.

She had sewn the bracelet loosely inside Lily’s cream blanket.

If she failed to return, Ethan was supposed to take Lily to the market.

Not because Anna trusted Daniel.

Because she trusted Daniel to recognize the bracelet.

Daniel’s throat closed.

“The collision…”

“Accidental.”

“The can?”

“Accidental.”

Daniel remembered Ethan reaching into the street.

Remembered striking him seconds later.

Anna had built a desperate path back to him.

And Daniel had met his son with violence.

Ruiz continued.

“Marcus picked Anna up. He claimed he would help. Instead he brought her to Charles.”

“Why?”

“Charles told him Daniel could never be allowed to establish Ethan’s identity before the trust transition.”

Daniel looked toward the interview room.

“And Harbor Recovery?”

“Keene admitted Anna under false psychiatric documentation. When the warrant got close, they moved her to Charles’s residence.”

“Keene?”

“His lawyer contacted us this morning.”

“He’s cooperating too?”

“Everyone cooperates when the boat starts sinking.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Charles named one North Quay.”

Ruiz blinked.

“What?”

“Never mind.”

That evening Daniel met Anna in a quiet conference room.

No lawyers.

No police.

Just them.

He sat across the table.

“The bracelet belonged to Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“Lucas.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you rename him?”

Anna looked down.

“Because every database in the country was searching for Lucas Cross.”

“That isn’t the only reason.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Lucas was the name we gave him together.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“And Ethan?”

“A name I chose after I realized I might be raising him alone.”

“Why Ethan?”

“It means strong, enduring.”

Daniel smiled painfully.

“That sounds like you.”

“No.”

Anna’s eyes filled.

“It sounds like him.”

Silence.

Daniel said, “I’m sorry.”

Anna closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“I don’t expect that to repair anything.”

“Good.”

“I don’t expect us to become what we were.”

“Good.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Anna did too.

It was the first sound between them that belonged to the old life.

Then she became serious.

“I heard what you told Ethan about forgiveness.”

“What?”

“He repeated it.”

Daniel looked down.

“He remembers everything.”

“He had to.”

Anna folded her hands.

“Daniel, Marcus gave prosecutors a location.”

“What location?”

“A Cross Meridian archive vault under Pier 38.”

Daniel frowned.

“We don’t have a vault there.”

“Charles does.”

“What’s inside?”

Anna looked toward the glass wall.

“The original transaction ledgers.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“And?”

“The emails ordering Marcus to alter them.”

“That would end this.”

Anna shook her head.

“No.”

“There’s more?”

“Yes.”

She leaned forward.

“Charles kept records of every payment he made to find Ethan.”

Daniel felt cold.

“For eight years?”

May you like

Anna nodded.

“He never stopped hunting us.”
