Chapter 8 - The Second Betrayal

Daniel listened to Anna’s recording until sunrise.

There was no dramatic confession after the final sentence.

Only Anna breathing.

Then the file ended.

Maya shut the laptop.

“We need corroboration.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“You always say that.”

“Because courts prefer evidence to emotional certainty.”

“She said Marcus changed the records.”

“Then we prove it.”

At nine, Daniel met Ethan under supervision.

He did not tell him about Marcus immediately.

He told him something harder.

“The test came back.”

Ethan stared at the carpet.

“I know.”

“Renee told you?”

“Yes.”

Daniel waited.

Ethan asked, “Does that mean I have to live with you?”

“No.”

“Does it mean my name changes?”

“No.”

“Do I have to call you Dad?”

Daniel swallowed.

“No.”

Ethan finally looked at him.

“What does it mean?”

“That I’m your biological father.”

“That’s just science.”

Daniel almost smiled despite himself.

“Yes.”

Ethan folded his arms.

“What else?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“It means I have responsibilities I failed to meet even when I didn’t know where you were.”

“You looked for me?”

“For years.”

“Mom said rich people can find anybody.”

“She was almost right.”

“Then why didn’t you find us?”

Daniel thought of private investigators submitting invoices while he attended board dinners.

“Because I looked like a rich man.”

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I paid people to search. I didn’t question the story I had been given hard enough.”

Ethan looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother was protecting you from people she believed were dangerous.”

“Your father.”

“Yes.”

“And Marcus?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Possibly.”

Ethan stood.

“What did he do?”

Daniel told him only what Anna’s recording established.

Marcus was Lily’s legal father.

Anna said he had betrayed her.

Nothing more.

Ethan’s face drained of color.

“He can’t take Lily.”

“No one is taking her today.”

“But he can later.”

“Maybe.”

Ethan grabbed Daniel’s sleeve suddenly.

The gesture shocked both of them.

“You can’t let him.”

Daniel looked at the small fingers gripping expensive fabric.

Eight nights ago, he might have mistaken fear for permission to dominate.

Now he asked, “Do you want me to help stop him?”

“Yes.”

“Then I will use the court.”

Ethan’s grip tightened.

“Not your fists?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Not my fists.”

That afternoon, Maya obtained archived bank materials through counsel for Cross Meridian’s outside accounting firm.

The $4.8 million transfer had originated from an acquisition escrow account.

Anna’s credentials appeared on the final transaction record.

But earlier system logs showed another user had modified the source field twelve minutes after execution.

User: MBELL-CONTROLLER.

Marcus.

Maya placed the printout in front of Daniel.

“It proves he altered a field.”

“Does it prove Charles ordered him?”

“No.”

“Does it prove Anna didn’t steal the money?”

“Not yet. Her credentials still appear.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Where did the money go?”

“A vendor called North Quay Advisory.”

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

North Quay had been dissolved seven years earlier.

Its registered agent was a law office in Nevada.

Its beneficial-owner records were sealed behind corporate formalities.

Maya had already started lawful discovery through the civil trust dispute.

Daniel stared at the name.

“North Quay.”

Something bothered him.

Then he remembered.

His father owned a sailboat called North Quay when Daniel was a teenager.

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“Coincidence?”

“With Charles, almost nothing is.”

Renee called.

Marcus had completed his first supervised visit with Lily.

Ethan had refused to attend.

“He brought gifts,” Renee said.

“For an eight-month-old?”

“Clothes. Formula. A stroller.”

Daniel looked out the window.

“Did Lily react to him?”

“She cried.”

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“I know.”

Renee paused.

“Ethan had a bad reaction afterward. He thought Marcus would return with a court order and take her.”

“I’ll talk to him.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t promise him outcomes you cannot control.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Everyone kept teaching him the same lesson.

Power was not certainty.

“I won’t.”

That evening Maya received records from the family trust administrator.

The independent fiduciary had recognized Ethan’s paternity.

Charles’s eighteen-percent voting proxy was suspended pending formal transition.

For the first time in decades, Charles no longer controlled the block.

Within an hour, Cross Meridian announced an emergency shareholder meeting.

Daniel read the notice.

“He’s moving fast.”

Maya looked at the agenda.

“Proposed sale of strategic assets. Amendment of executive authority. Interim CEO compensation.”

“Marcus.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared from an unknown number.

Anna.

She was seated in a dim room.

Today’s newspaper lay beside her.

Her wrists were not visible.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

STOP DIGGING.
