Chapter 7 - Lily’s Father

Marcus arrived at family court holding an eight-month-old photograph of Lily.
Daniel nearly crossed the hallway before Maya caught his arm.
“Don’t.”
“He knew her.”
“Yes.”
“He knew her while Ethan was collecting cans to buy formula.”
“Daniel.”
Marcus saw him.
Their eyes met.
Daniel stopped.
That restraint cost him more than the confrontation would have.
Marcus’s attorney presented a signed California voluntary declaration of parentage executed shortly after Lily’s birth.
Marcus Bell was legally listed as her father.
Anna was the mother.
The document was facially valid.
Marcus claimed Anna had disappeared with Lily after a relationship ended badly.
He claimed he had spent months searching.
Daniel sat behind Maya, feeling Ethan’s small shoulder beside Renee three seats away.
The commissioner asked Marcus, “Why did you not report the child missing?”
Marcus answered smoothly.
“Anna contacted me periodically. She told me Lily was safe. I believed pushing would endanger the baby.”
Daniel knew that style.
Marcus had used the same calm tone in billion-dollar negotiations.
The commissioner continued.
“Did you see Anna three nights ago?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why did she meet you?”
“She asked for twenty thousand dollars.”
Daniel whispered, “Lie.”
Maya stepped on his shoe.
The commissioner looked up.
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“I gave her five thousand in cash. She left.”
Detective Ruiz had no evidence yet proving otherwise.
The court declined to transfer Lily immediately but granted Marcus supervised visitation pending further investigation.
Ethan heard enough.
Afterward, he confronted Daniel.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You knew Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“You worked with him every day.”
“I didn’t know about Lily.”
Ethan’s voice rose.
“You don’t know anything!”
People in the hallway turned.
Ethan pointed at Daniel.
“You didn’t know Mom was innocent. You didn’t know where I was. You didn’t know Marcus knew Lily. You didn’t know your dad controlled those shares.”
Daniel had no defense.
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“How are you supposed to protect us?”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“I’m not asking you to believe I can.”
“Then what are you asking?”
“A chance to learn.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Mom already learned. That’s why she ran.”
He walked away with Renee.
That night, Daniel opened a box he had not touched in years.
Anna’s things.
He found photographs, birthday cards, old legal correspondence.
Then a court filing.
Three days before Anna disappeared, Daniel had signed an emergency petition seeking temporary sole custody of Lucas.
His father’s family attorney had drafted it.
Daniel remembered the story Charles told him.
Anna was unstable.
Anna had become obsessed with fraud theories.
Anna might flee.
Protect the baby first, ask questions later.
Daniel had signed.
He sat on the floor with the paper in his hand.
Maya arrived twenty minutes later.
“You found it.”
“I forgot.”
“No,” she said. “You buried it.”
Daniel looked up.
“I signed away her ability to take our son without risking arrest.”
“You signed a petition. The judge never ruled before she disappeared.”
“Anna didn’t know that.”
Maya sat opposite him.
“What did you tell her?”
Daniel remembered.
His voice cracked.
“I told her my lawyers would destroy her.”
Maya closed her eyes.
“Daniel.”
“She called me from a parking garage. She was crying. She said my father had stolen company money and Marcus changed the records.”
“And you?”
“I told her to come home.”
“That sounds reasonable.”
“I told her if she didn’t, I’d make sure she never saw Lucas again.”
The room became silent.
Maya said, “That is why she ran.”
Daniel stared at the custody petition.
“Partly.”
His phone buzzed.
An email from Renee.
Anna’s storage box contained an old digital recorder.
It held only one playable file.
Maya opened it on her laptop.
Anna’s voice filled the room.
“If Daniel hears this, do not let him pretend he was only a victim.”
Daniel flinched.
“He loved me. I know that. Maybe part of me still loves who he was before Charles taught him that love and ownership were the same thing.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Daniel signed the custody papers. Daniel threatened me. Daniel chose his father.”
A pause.
Then Anna continued.
“But Charles built the lie.”
Daniel looked up.
“And Marcus made it possible.”
Static crackled.
“Marcus changed the source account field after Charles moved four million eight hundred thousand dollars through a shell vendor. He made it look like my credentials initiated the theft.”
Maya leaned toward the speaker.
Anna’s voice became quieter.
“I forgave Marcus years later because he helped Ethan and me survive. That was my mistake.”
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
“Marcus is Lily’s father.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
May you like
Then Anna said the sentence that changed everything.
“And Marcus betrayed me a second time before Lily was born.”
