Chapter 1 - The Person Behind Him

Dante Moretti turned slowly.
Eight-year-old Leo stood behind him with dirt on his white shirt and a red mark along one cheek. Seven-year-old Mia had both hands wrapped around her father's wrist.
Neither child made a sound.
Neither did the fifty guests scattered across the garden.
At the edge of the lawn stood Celeste Moretti.
Dante's forty-four-year-old sister.
Moretti Meridian Holdings' general counsel.
The aunt who had helped him raise Leo and Mia after their mother, Isabel, died four years earlier.
And in Celeste's right hand was a phone pressed against her ear.
For one long second, Dante's brain refused to accept what his eyes were telling him.
Then the voice in the black smartphone against his palm said, quieter now, "Javier?"
Celeste lowered her phone.
The connection ended.
Dante stared at her.
"Why," he asked, "did you want Leo away from me?"
Celeste's face remained composed.
She set her champagne glass on a passing tray as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
"You don't understand what you heard."
Javier, standing several feet away, looked suddenly terrified.
Dante glanced at him.
"You told me the person who wanted my son was behind me."
"I didn't say—"
"You did."
Celeste stepped forward. "Dante, Javier called me fifteen minutes ago. He said Leo was upset and you were losing your temper."
Leo jerked upright.
"That's not true!"
Celeste looked at him with practiced sadness.
"Sweetheart, adults are talking."
"Don't speak to him like that," Dante said.
Her eyes hardened.
The elegant garden around them—the clipped hedges, stone fountains, white-linen tables and expensive bottles of champagne—had become strangely theatrical.
Dante suddenly noticed how many guests were avoiding his gaze.
Board members.
Bankers.
Corporate attorneys.
Three members of the Moretti Meridian executive committee.
This had not been merely a family barbecue.
Celeste had insisted on combining Leo's end-of-school celebration with a company garden reception.
Now Dante wondered why.
He looked at Javier.
Javier had worked on the Moretti estate security team for six years. Dante had paid for his mother's surgery. He had promoted him twice.
"What were you trying to do with Leo?"
Javier swallowed.
"Nothing."
"You pinned an eight-year-old boy face-down on the lawn."
"He attacked me."
Leo's mouth fell open.
"I did not!"
Javier pointed toward him. "He stole something."
"What?"
Silence.
Dante held up the black smartphone.
"What's on this?"
Javier's confidence collapsed again.
"Give it back."
Dante did not move.
Celeste took another step forward.
"That isn't your property."
"My son isn't yours either."
Several guests exchanged glances.
Celeste lowered her voice.
"You're making a mistake."
"So explain it."
"I will. Privately."
"No."
"Dante."
"You wanted Leo separated from me. Javier attacked him. You called Javier while it was happening. Explain it here."
Celeste looked around at the watching guests.
For the first time, a faint crack appeared in her expression.
Then she changed tactics.
"You want the truth?"
"Yes."
"I was trying to protect him."
Mia whispered, "From Daddy?"
Celeste's eyes flicked toward her.
Dante felt Mia's fingers tighten around his hand.
Celeste sighed.
"Your father has been under tremendous pressure."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm telling the truth."
She turned slightly toward the crowd.
"The Bellaforte transaction has placed enormous strain on him. The board knows that. Several people here have witnessed his temper recently."
Dante stared at her.
There it was.
Not an explanation.
A narrative.
Prepared in advance.
Javier understood it too.
His eyes dropped.
Celeste continued.
"Javier told me Leo was frightened. I asked him to take Leo inside."
"You asked him to get Leo away from Dante," Leo said.
The boy's voice trembled, but it carried across the silent garden.
Celeste looked at him.
Dante saw something cold pass through her eyes.
Then it disappeared.
"That's enough."
"No," Dante said. "It's not."
He turned to Javier.
"Why did you shove Mia?"
Javier said nothing.
Mia pointed at him.
"He wanted Leo's tablet."
Dante looked down.
"What tablet?"
"The blue one," Mia said. "Leo had it before."
Leo's face changed.
His fear became something else.
Recognition.
"Dad."
Dante crouched in front of him.
"What?"
Leo looked at Celeste.
Then back at his father.
"I recorded something."
Celeste went still.
Dante saw it.
So did Javier.
"What did you record?"
Leo's breathing became shallow.
"I was playing spy yesterday in Grandpa's old study. I left my tablet under the desk with the camera on."
"And?"
Leo swallowed.
"Aunt Celeste came in with two men."
Every muscle in Dante's body tightened.
"What men?"
"I don't know."
"What did they say?"
Leo shook his head.
"I didn't listen to all of it. But Aunt Celeste saw me later with the tablet."
Celeste spoke sharply.
"He's confused."
"I'm not!"
Dante stood.
"Where's the tablet now?"
Leo pointed toward Javier.
"He took it."
Javier immediately shook his head.
"That's a lie."
"Police are on their way," a voice said.
Everyone turned.
Margaret Hale, one of Dante's neighbors, stood near the terrace with her phone raised.
"I called them when Javier put Leo on the ground."
Javier cursed under his breath.
Celeste's expression hardened.
Dante looked again at the black smartphone.
It vibrated.
A new message appeared on the locked screen.
No sender name.
Only a number.
YOU HAD ONE JOB. GET THE TABLET BEFORE THE POLICE ARRIVE.
Dante felt something colder than anger move through him.
He raised the phone so Javier could see the message.
Javier's face drained.
Celeste stared at it.
Dante said, "Who sent this?"
Javier said nothing.
Sirens sounded beyond the wrought-iron gates.
Celeste leaned toward Dante.
Her voice was almost inaudible.
"You should think very carefully before you turn this into a criminal matter."
Dante looked at his sister.
"Someone attacked my son."
Celeste's gaze did not move.
"And someone," she replied, "can take both children away from you."
That hurt more than Javier's shove.
Dante looked at Leo.
Then Mia.
Then back at his sister.
"What have you done?"
Celeste stepped away just as uniformed officers entered the garden.
May you like
And Dante understood, with absolute certainty, that the attack on Leo had been designed to start something much larger.
What he didn't know yet was that Celeste had already started it weeks ago.
