Chapter 9 - The Neutral Vote

The board suspended Dante as chief executive by six votes to four.

Not permanently.

"Administrative leave pending investigation."

The language was gentle.

The effect was not.

Celeste became interim CEO.

Victor remained CFO.

Dante retained his personal twenty-seven percent equity and a board seat, but operational authority disappeared before lunch.

His badge stopped opening executive floors.

His company email was frozen.

His assistant was instructed to report to Celeste.

Dante stood in the lobby holding a cardboard box containing family photographs from his office.

Employees pretended not to watch.

He had spent seventeen years building the company.

It took eleven minutes to remove him from it.

Outside, Nora waited beside his car.

"Don't give them a scene."

"I know."

"You look like you want to throw the building."

"I helped buy the building."

"Then don't throw your own property."

Despite himself, Dante almost smiled.

It vanished quickly.

At home, Leo saw the box.

"Did you get fired?"

Dante set it down.

"For a while."

"Because of me?"

The question devastated him.

"No."

"If I didn't record Aunt Celeste—"

Dante knelt.

"Listen to me. You did nothing wrong."

Leo stared at the floor.

"Javier grabbed me because of the tablet."

"Javier made that choice. Celeste made choices. I made some bad choices too."

"What bad choices?"

Dante hesitated.

"I trusted people when I should have paid attention."

Leo considered this.

"Mom used to say trusting isn't the same as not checking."

Dante looked at him.

"She said that?"

"About my homework."

He laughed softly.

Of course she had.

That evening Priya arrived with more financial records.

"I found the beneficial owner of Northstar."

Dante stood.

"Celeste?"

"No."

She placed a corporate filing on the table.

A Delaware holding company controlled Northstar.

That company was in turn managed by a trust.

The trust beneficiary was Grant Weller, Hawthorne Capital's CEO.

Dante stared.

"Moretti Meridian paid $6.4 million into a company owned by the man trying to buy Bellaforte."

"Yes."

"Why would Celeste do that?"

"Because Bellaforte isn't the only transaction."

Priya opened a second spreadsheet.

Over four years, Moretti Meridian had sold three minor properties to Hawthorne-related entities.

Each sale was slightly below independent valuation.

Each was followed by a redevelopment partnership in which Northstar received consulting fees.

Dante's skin went cold.

"How much did they make?"

"I can trace at least fourteen million in total related-party benefit."

"To Grant."

"Mostly."

"Celeste's cut?"

"Not obvious yet."

Dante frowned.

Priya slid over another document.

"A deferred compensation agreement."

Celeste had signed it fourteen months earlier.

Not with Moretti Meridian.

With a Hawthorne affiliate.

The agreement promised her a three-percent carried interest in a future investment vehicle if she left Moretti Meridian and joined as managing partner.

Nora stared.

"That could be worth tens of millions."

"Exactly."

Dante finally saw the structure.

Celeste did not merely want his job.

She wanted Bellaforte transferred cheaply, then planned to join the buyer and profit from the appreciation.

"She was selling our company from inside."

Priya nodded.

"And Victor helped."

Dante looked toward Isabel's photograph.

"She found this four years ago."

"Parts of it."

"And they kept going."

Priya closed the file.

"They may have accelerated after she died."

The words hung there.

Dante stiffened.

"What are you implying?"

"Nothing about her death. You told me it was cancer. I'm saying she was the internal obstacle. Once she was gone, oversight weakened."

Dante hated how true that sounded.

His grief had become their opportunity.

His phone rang.

Detective Reeves.

"We obtained a warrant for Sloane Mercer's company vehicle."

Dante stood.

"And?"

"No tablet."

His hope collapsed.

"But we found packaging for a portable drive."

"What kind?"

"Secure storage. Recently purchased."

Nora said, "She copied it."

Reeves continued.

"We also found something under the driver's seat."

"What?"

"A handwritten note."

Dante waited.

Reeves read it.

J — Leo to pool house. S — device. C — call. V — server.

Dante looked at Nora.

Every role.

Every step.

Javier moved Leo.

Sloane took the tablet.

Celeste made the call.

Victor deleted the backup.

Reeves said, "We have a conspiracy forming."

"Then charge Celeste."

"Not yet."

Dante gripped the phone.

"Why not?"

"Because I want the person above her."

Dante went silent.

"Above Celeste?"

"We extracted another deleted fragment from Javier's phone."

"What does it say?"

Reeves answered:

C thinks she's getting Bellaforte. Let her. Once Dante is out, we cut her out too.

Dante stared into the dark room.

May you like

Celeste believed she was controlling the conspiracy.

Someone else believed they were controlling Celeste.
