Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Confession

Nobody moved.

Detective Reeves stepped into the room.

Two federal agents followed her.

A third remained in the hall.

Charles recovered first.

"This is a private corporate meeting."

One agent replied, "Not anymore."

Grant Weller vanished from the video screen.

Priya immediately said, "He disconnected."

The agent made a call.

Charles looked at Celeste.

"You brought them."

Celeste gave a hollow laugh.

"You brought this."

Reeves served search and seizure warrants covering electronic devices and records related to Northstar, Arbor Ridge, the Bellaforte financing and the scheme involving Leo.

Victor stood abruptly.

"I want counsel."

"Then don't say anything," Reeves replied.

He sat.

Dante looked at Celeste.

"Finish what you were saying."

Charles snapped, "This meeting is adjourned."

Dante responded, "No."

Charles turned.

Dante's twenty-seven percent, the children's restored eighteen percent subject to Evelyn Park's oversight, and several independent directors were still present.

Evelyn spoke calmly.

"The trust shares oppose adjournment."

For the first time since the barbecue, Dante felt power return without having to seize it.

Charles saw it too.

Celeste continued.

"Four years ago, I helped conceal related-party payments Isabel had identified."

Dante's stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"Because Victor told me exposure would collapse a refinancing."

Victor whispered, "Celeste."

She ignored him.

"Later I learned Grant Weller controlled Northstar. By then I had already approved millions in invoices."

Charles said, "Stop talking."

She looked at him.

"Then Charles found Lorenzo's scaffold file."

One federal agent began taking notes.

Celeste's voice shook.

"He threatened to expose my role in the document review unless I helped move Bellaforte."

Dante asked, "When did the plan to use the children start?"

Celeste closed her eyes.

"Three months ago."

"Whose idea?"

"Charles suggested using the trust provisions. I said no."

Charles laughed.

"She's lying."

Celeste looked at him.

"I said no twice."

Dante's voice became harder.

"And the third time?"

"I said yes."

There was no excuse in her tone.

That mattered.

She continued.

"I convinced myself Leo and Mia wouldn't be harmed. That Dante would lose corporate authority for a few weeks. That I would close Bellaforte, escape Charles and take the Hawthorne position."

Dante stared.

"You were going to destroy my relationship with my children for a job."

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I told myself it was temporary."

"You told Mia judges might take them."

"I was preparing her."

"No. You were frightening her."

Celeste lowered her head.

"Yes."

The room was silent.

Charles suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

"This is absurd."

He stood at the head of Lorenzo's table.

"You want a villain? Fine. Make me one. But Bellaforte still owes my bank forty million dollars."

Priya said, "Based on fraudulent loan documents."

Charles smiled.

"Fraudulent according to whom?"

"Dante never authorized them."

"His signature is there."

Priya opened a binder.

"So are metadata logs showing Victor's office altered the approval certificate after execution."

Victor's face collapsed.

Charles turned toward him.

"You incompetent fool."

Victor looked up.

Something changed.

Fear became anger.

"You told me the logs were purged."

Charles went still.

Every federal agent in the room heard it.

Victor realized what he had said.

Too late.

Celeste almost smiled.

Charles pointed at him.

"You're confused."

Victor stood.

"No. I'm finished."

His lawyer was not present.

Reeves warned him.

"Mr. Sanz, you should stop talking if you intend to invoke counsel."

Victor looked at Dante.

"I deleted Leo's cloud backup."

Dante said nothing.

"Celeste told me to."

Celeste whispered, "Yes."

"I created the bridge-loan tranches."

Charles shouted, "Enough!"

Victor turned on him.

"You designed them!"

Charles moved around the table.

One of the federal agents stepped between them.

The power in the room reversed completely.

Charles had spent years making people afraid of what he knew.

Now everyone was speaking because they were more afraid of him than of the truth.

Dante looked at Celeste.

"Why did you keep Leo's tablet?"

"I couldn't destroy it."

"Why?"

Her lips trembled.

"Because Isabel's voice was on it."

Dante frowned.

"Isabel?"

Celeste nodded.

"There was an old video saved in the photos. Leo must have copied it from her computer."

Dante's chest tightened.

"What video?"

"She was talking to him when he was a baby."

Dante's throat closed.

"And you watched it?"

"Yes."

"While planning to take her children from me?"

Celeste began to cry.

"Yes."

For the first time, Dante saw not the brilliant lawyer or ruthless sister.

He saw a woman fully aware of what she had become.

Reeves approached Celeste.

"I need your phone."

Celeste handed it over.

Then she removed the Moretti Meridian access card from her purse.

She placed it on the table in front of Dante.

"I resign."

Dante stared at the card.

Charles barked, "You don't have authority to resign in the middle of—"

Celeste turned.

"I wasn't talking to you."

The federal agent served Charles with a second document.

A seizure order for Delaney Private Bank records.

Charles read it.

His face went white.

Dante asked Priya, "What is that?"

She looked over the agent's shoulder.

Then smiled for the first time all day.

"They found the bank transfer."

"What transfer?"

"Charles's personal family trust received a five-million-dollar commitment fee from a Hawthorne affiliate."

Charles stared at her.

Priya continued.

"Contingent on Bellaforte closing."

The board members erupted.

Charles had not merely advised a transaction.

He had concealed a direct personal interest in it.

Under the company's conflict policies, his vote was invalid.

More importantly, the transaction itself was compromised.

Dante looked around the table.

"The Bellaforte resolution is withdrawn."

No one objected.

Charles sank back into Lorenzo's chair.

The sale was stopped.

May you like

But the loan remained.

And saving Bellaforte would require Dante to confront the damage his own negligence had helped make possible.
