Chapter 13 - The Family Breaks

Dante wanted to show Celeste the memorandum.
Nora refused.
"Not yet."
"She deserves to know."
"You're underestimating what desperate people do when their entire self-story collapses."
"She's my sister."
"She framed you for child abuse."
The words ended the argument.
Celeste learned anyway.
Bianca told her.
Dante discovered this when Celeste arrived unannounced at their mother's townhouse.
He happened to be there reviewing old corporate records with Priya.
Celeste walked into the drawing room holding a copy of Lorenzo's memorandum.
Her hands were shaking.
"You gave him this?"
She was looking at Bianca.
Bianca stood.
"You had a right to know."
Celeste laughed.
It sounded almost broken.
"A right?"
Dante had never seen his sister cry.
Not at Isabel's funeral.
Not at Lorenzo's.
Now tears stood in her eyes.
"Twenty years," she said. "He let me think it was because I was a woman."
Bianca whispered, "That was part of it."
"Don't."
"Celeste—"
"Don't make it kinder."
She looked at Dante.
"You knew?"
"Yesterday."
"And you believed him."
"I believe the document is real."
"My father was a coward."
"Yes."
Celeste looked surprised.
Dante continued.
"He should have confronted you about the scaffold memo. He should have told you the truth. He should have told the worker's family the truth."
Celeste's face twisted.
"You think you're morally superior now?"
"No."
"Really?"
"No. Isabel warned me about Northstar and I ignored her. I signed payment batches I didn't review. I let you and Victor control things because it made my life easier."
Celeste stared.
Dante said, "I helped create the space you used."
For a moment she had no answer.
Then the anger returned.
"You got everything."
"Not everything."
"You got the company."
"I lost my wife."
"So did the rest of us!"
"But you used her trust to attack her children."
Bianca gasped softly.
Celeste looked toward the doorway.
Leo and Mia were standing there.
Dante had not heard them come down.
Mia's face was devastated.
"Aunt Celeste?"
Celeste's expression changed instantly.
"Mia—"
"You wanted a judge to take us?"
"No."
Leo stepped forward.
"You told Javier to get me."
Celeste opened her mouth.
No words came.
Dante moved toward the children.
Leo backed away from everyone.
"You all lie."
"Leo."
"Grandma lied. Aunt Celeste lied. Javier lied. You didn't believe Mom."
Dante stopped.
That last one was for him.
Leo's eyes filled.
"You say you protect us, but you didn't protect Mom when she told you."
There was no defense.
Dante let the silence stand.
"You're right."
The adults in the room went still.
Leo seemed almost more upset by the admission.
Dante crouched.
"I loved your mother. But I didn't listen to her enough. That's something I can't change."
"Then how do I know you listen to me?"
Dante looked at him.
"You don't know because I say it. I have to show you."
Leo wiped his face.
Mia began crying.
Celeste took one step toward her.
Mia recoiled.
The movement destroyed whatever remained in Celeste's expression.
She stopped.
Bianca covered her mouth.
Dante gathered both children.
Celeste stood alone in the center of the room.
For the first time, no strategy could restore her authority.
Then she looked at Dante.
"You think Charles is your biggest problem."
Dante straightened.
"What does that mean?"
"Bellaforte's debt."
"What debt?"
Victor had mentioned covenants at the board meeting.
Now Celeste smiled bitterly.
"Ask Priya."
Priya's expression changed.
Celeste continued.
"Moretti Meridian has a forty-million-dollar bridge facility maturing in six weeks."
Dante stared.
"We don't."
"We do."
"Who signed it?"
Celeste held his gaze.
"You did."
"No."
"Your electronic signature. Your board authorization. Your trust certification."
Dante turned to Priya.
"Find it."
Celeste laughed softly.
"You really don't know."
Dante's stomach tightened.
"Know what?"
"Charles and Victor used your omnibus authorizations to secure a loan against Bellaforte's holding company."
Nora said, "That's fraud if Dante didn't approve it."
Celeste nodded.
"It is."
"Then why hide it?"
"Because if the bank accelerates after learning the authorization was defective, Bellaforte can be pushed into default."
Dante understood.
"If we expose the fraud, we could lose the hotel anyway."
"Yes."
Celeste looked at him with exhausted hatred.
"That's Charles's final insurance policy."

Then she turned to Bianca.
"And the lender is Delaney Private Bank."
