Chapter 14 - Dante Loses the Company

Priya confirmed it by noon.

Forty million dollars.

A bridge loan issued eighteen months earlier by Delaney Private Bank.

Borrower: Bellaforte Holdings LLC.

Documents bore Dante's electronic signature.

He had never seen the loan.

Victor had used a standing authorization Dante signed for ordinary refinancing transactions under ten million dollars.

The forty-million-dollar facility had been divided across related tranches during internal approval, then consolidated at closing.

"Deliberate circumvention," Priya said.

"Can the bank enforce it?" Dante asked.

"Against the company? Maybe. Against you personally? That's more complicated. But litigation alone could trigger covenant problems."

"And if Bellaforte misses maturity?"

"Delaney can seek remedies against pledged hotel assets."

Dante walked to the window.

Charles had created a trap with two exits.

Approve the Hawthorne sale and Charles's bank gets repaid.

Expose the fraud and risk financial crisis.

Nora said, "We seek an injunction."

"Against what?"

"The Bellaforte sale."

"Celeste controls operations."

"Temporarily."

"The board supports her."

"Not if they see the recording."

Dante turned.

"We release it."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Reeves asked us not to contaminate an active investigation."

He hated how every lawful answer required patience.

Celeste had no such problem.

At four that afternoon she held a company-wide video meeting.

Dante watched from home.

She appeared calm and authoritative.

"Moretti Meridian is larger than any one member of our family," she told employees. "Our responsibility is stability."

Then she announced a formal review of Bellaforte strategic alternatives.

Not a sale.

Not yet.

But the market understood.

Within an hour business reporters published stories about Dante's suspension, family litigation and "concerns regarding leadership conduct."

Moretti Meridian was private, but its bonds traded.

Their price fell.

Lenders started calling.

That evening, Dante received notice from the probate court.

The judge appointed a neutral professional fiduciary, Evelyn Park, as temporary co-trustee pending a full evidentiary hearing.

Celeste was not appointed.

That was a victory.

It did not feel like one.

Dante could not vote the children's shares alone.

The corporate balance remained broken.

Then came the board resolution.

By majority vote, Celeste's interim CEO appointment was extended for sixty days.

Dante read it at the kitchen counter.

Leo entered.

"Are you okay?"

Dante almost gave the automatic answer.

Yes.

Instead he said, "No."

Leo climbed onto the stool.

"Did Aunt Celeste win?"

"Today?"

"Yeah."

"Yes."

Leo absorbed that.

"Does that mean she's right?"

Dante looked at him.

"No."

That was a lesson adults often forgot.

Winning and being right were different things.

Mia came in holding a photograph of Isabel.

"Can we go somewhere else?"

Dante frowned.

"Where?"

"Not this house."

"Why?"

"Everybody knows where we are."

His chest tightened.

The anonymous school photograph had changed her sense of home.

Dante made another decision.

They would stay with Nora temporarily.

Not because Celeste had won.

Because his children needed to sleep without watching the driveway.

That night he packed their bags himself.

Bianca arrived unexpectedly.

"I want to help."

Dante looked at her.

"Then tell the truth at the hearing."

She understood immediately.

"About my affidavit?"

"About everything."

Her eyes lowered.

"I believed Celeste."

"You wanted to believe her."

Bianca flinched.

Dante continued.

"Because believing her meant you didn't have to admit this family has been covering things up since Dad."

Bianca looked toward the children upstairs.

"I was protecting us."

"That's what Celeste says."

The sentence landed.

Bianca sank into a chair.

After a moment she whispered, "I'll correct the affidavit."

Dante nodded.

It would help.

But not enough.

His phone rang.

Priya.

"Dante, we have a serious problem."

"What now?"

"The Bellaforte sale."

"What about it?"

"Celeste signed a letter of intent with Hawthorne this afternoon."

"She can't close without board approval."

"Correct."

"When's the vote?"

"She just called a special meeting."

Dante's pulse quickened.

"When?"

"Forty-eight hours."

"At headquarters?"

"No."

Priya hesitated.

"At the Moretti estate."

The same house.

The same garden.

The place where Javier had attacked Leo.

May you like

Dante looked out the dark window.

Celeste was taking the final fight back to where the conspiracy had begun.
