Chapter 4 - Dante Makes His First Mistake

The emergency board meeting began at nine.

Dante walked into the thirty-fourth-floor conference room of Moretti Meridian headquarters carrying no lawyer, no public relations adviser and far too much anger.

It was his first serious mistake.

Celeste was already there.

So was Victor Sanz.

Victor, fifty-one, had served as CFO for eleven years. He had vacationed with Dante's family. He had stood beside Dante at Isabel's funeral.

When Dante looked at him, Victor did not meet his eyes.

That was answer enough.

Charles Delaney tapped the table.

"Let's begin."

Dante remained standing.

"Victor deleted a video from my son's tablet."

Victor looked up.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Celeste sighed.

"Dante, sit down."

"No."

The board members shifted uneasily.

Dante pointed at Victor.

"Administrator code VS-004 deleted my son's recording at 6:14 last night."

Victor's face remained controlled.

"IT credentials are used by my department."

"Your credential."

"I didn't personally delete anything."

"Then who did?"

Celeste interrupted.

"This is exactly what we've been concerned about."

Dante turned.

"What?"

"Your behavior."

He laughed.

"You arranged for a man to attack Leo."

"I arranged nothing."

"I answered your call."

"Yes. Because Javier contacted me."

"He tried to take my son's tablet."

"According to an eight-year-old."

Dante moved around the table.

Charles said, "Dante."

Celeste did not move.

"Go ahead," she said softly. "Show them."

Dante stopped.

"Show them what?"

"The temper."

He understood too late.

Every phone in the room might be recording.

Every person at the table had just watched him storm in and accuse two executives of crimes without counsel or formal evidence.

Dante sat.

"Fine."

Celeste opened a folder.

"We have received reports of escalating erratic behavior."

She passed copies around.

The first was a memorandum from Dr. Elliot Kline, the family grief counselor Dante had seen six times after Isabel's death.

Dante read one sentence twice.

Mr. Moretti displayed increasing hostility, paranoid ideation regarding family members, and difficulty regulating anger.

His mouth went dry.

"I haven't seen Kline in two years."

Celeste nodded.

"The report covers your sessions."

"He never wrote this."

"Are you alleging forgery?"

"I'm saying he never told me this."

"Clinical notes don't require your agreement."

Dante turned the page.

There were references to conversations he barely remembered.

Fear of losing the company.

Resentment toward Celeste.

Statements about protecting the children "at any cost."

Ordinary grief had been rearranged into something dangerous.

Then came an affidavit from a former nanny claiming Dante once smashed a glass during an argument.

He remembered that too.

It had happened after Isabel's funeral.

He had dropped the glass.

The affidavit said he had thrown it.

Then Charles slid another document toward him.

A notice from Celeste.

She had filed a petition that morning in Cook County probate court requesting appointment of an independent guardian ad litem and temporary limitation of Dante's powers under the children's trust.

Dante stared at the filing.

"You filed this before the board meeting."

"I filed it at 7:43."

"You planned this."

"I responded to a crisis."

"You told Mia about judges yesterday."

Celeste's eyes flickered.

"She's seven."

"She remembers."

"Children misunderstand adult conversations."

Dante's phone buzzed.

A message from Nora.

DO NOT DISCUSS THE TRUST WITHOUT COUNSEL. I MEAN IT.

Too late.

Dante looked across the table.

"Here's what this is really about. Bellaforte."

Charles frowned.

"That's speculation."

"The children's trust owns eighteen percent of the voting stock. If I'm removed as trustee, Celeste becomes successor."

Celeste folded her hands.

"Under Isabel's trust agreement."

"And with those votes, you can approve Bellaforte's sale."

Victor finally spoke.

"Bellaforte is losing money."

"That's a lie."

"It needs eighty million in renovation."

"Which we can finance."

"Not under current covenants."

Dante stared at him.

"What covenants?"

Victor stopped.

The room changed.

Dante leaned forward.

"What covenants, Victor?"

Celeste said, "This isn't the time."

"It is now."

Victor glanced at Charles.

Charles looked down.

Dante suddenly realized there was information his own board had that he did not.

"What happened?"

No one answered.

Dante slammed his palm on the table.

A few directors flinched.

Celeste did not.

Instead she quietly turned her phone screen toward him.

It was recording.

Dante felt himself go cold.

She had provoked him again.

And he had cooperated.

Charles spoke carefully.

"The board will appoint a special committee. Until it completes an initial review, we request that you voluntarily refrain from unilateral corporate actions."

"Request?"

"Yes."

"And if I refuse?"

Celeste answered.

"We vote."

Dante looked around the table.

People he had hired avoided his eyes.

His anger gave way to something more useful.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Leo and Mia.

He stood slowly.

"I'm leaving."

Celeste smiled.

"Good."

At the door, Dante turned.

"Victor."

Victor looked up.

"If Leo's recording disappeared because you touched it, I will prove it."

Victor's lips parted.

Then Dante added, "And if someone made you do it, this is your last chance to decide whether you fall with them."

He walked out.

In the elevator, Nora called.

"You accused them?"

"Yes."

"You threatened Victor?"

"Yes."

"You absolute idiot."

"I know."

"No, you don't. Celeste just filed a supplemental declaration."

Dante closed his eyes.

"What declaration?"

"She included security footage from the conference room."

"The meeting ended thirty seconds ago."

"Apparently she had a live feed."

Dante leaned against the elevator wall.

Nora continued.

"She wants the court to see you as unstable before we even get a hearing."

Dante stared at his reflection in the polished steel doors.

For the first time, he understood the shape of the trap.

Celeste did not need to make him violent.

May you like

She only needed to make him look uncontrollable.

And he had just helped her.
