Chapter 11 - The Recording Comes Back

Dante removed Leo and Mia from school for three days.

Not because he wanted to hide.

Because someone had photographed them.

Detective Reeves assigned patrol checks to the estate but warned him not to transform the children’s lives into a fortress.

"They need routine," she said.

"They need safety."

"They need both."

Dante knew that.

He still hired two independent security specialists.

Neither had any connection to Moretti Meridian.

Celeste attacked the decision within hours.

Her lawyers filed a memorandum describing Dante's new security measures as "escalating paranoia."

Nora nearly threw the filing across the room.

"They threaten his children and then use his response as evidence."

"Can we trace the photograph?" Dante asked.

"Reeves is trying."

Mia sat at the dining table drawing.

She listened more than adults realized.

"Why does Aunt Celeste hate us?"

Dante looked at her.

"She doesn't."

Nora glanced toward him.

Dante continued carefully.

"She has done things that hurt us because she wants something very badly."

"Your company?"

"Partly."

Mia colored a window blue.

"That's stupid."

Dante almost smiled.

"Yes."

"Companies aren't people."

"No."

"Then why do grown-ups pick them over people?"

No one in the room answered.

That afternoon, Leo approached with Isabel's old laptop charger.

"I remembered something."

Dante put down his phone.

"What?"

"When my tablet uploads, it goes to Mom's computer first."

"We checked that."

"No. The little box."

"What little box?"

Leo led them upstairs.

Behind Isabel's desktop was a black network storage unit Dante had forgotten existed.

It had been installed after a ransomware incident years earlier.

Local snapshots.

Automatic backups independent of the company cloud.

Priya called an IT forensic specialist.

Two hours later, they found a partial copy.

The video was damaged.

The first four minutes had no sound.

The last seventeen minutes were intact.

Dante, Nora and Detective Reeves watched together.

The camera angle was terrible.

Most of the image showed the underside of Lorenzo's old desk.

Then Celeste's voice appeared.

Clear.

"We need the temporary order before the board vote."

Grant Weller answered.

"Charles says the affidavit package is enough."

Victor spoke next.

"What if Dante doesn't react?"

Celeste laughed softly.

"He always reacts."

Dante closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Grant:

"And Leo?"

Celeste:

"He saw Sloane in here yesterday. We don't know what he heard."

Victor:

"He's eight."

Celeste:

"Eight-year-olds repeat things."

Grant:

"Then get the tablet."

Victor:

"I can clear the server if it syncs."

Dante stared at him on the screen even though only Victor's shoes were visible.

Then another voice entered.

Charles Delaney.

"You're all overcomplicating this."

Nora whispered, "There."

Charles continued.

"We do not need Dante convicted of anything. We need uncertainty. The court neutralizes the trust vote. The board neutralizes Dante. Bellaforte closes."

Celeste said, "And my Hawthorne agreement?"

Grant answered, "Protected."

Charles laughed.

"We'll discuss that after closing."

Celeste's tone sharpened.

"No. We discuss it now."

Then Charles said the line that explained everything.

"Don't forget, Celeste, I've read Lorenzo's scaffold file."

Silence on the recording.

Dante watched his sister's shoes shift.

Charles continued.

"You do your job. I'll do mine."

Celeste answered through clenched teeth.

"You think you can blackmail me forever?"

"I only need forty-eight more hours."

The recording stopped when Leo entered the study and picked up the tablet.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Reeves finally said, "That's substantial."

Dante looked at her.

"Substantial enough?"

"Enough for warrants. Probably enough for conspiracy charges when combined with Javier."

"Against Charles?"

"Possibly. Celeste. Grant. Victor. Sloane."

Dante exhaled.

For the first time, the balance moved.

Then Reeves held up a hand.

"But."

He hated that word.

"What?"

"Your court case and the criminal case are different things. This video helps. It doesn't automatically erase concerns about you."

Nora nodded.

"Dante's own conduct still matters."

He looked at them.

"My sister planned this."

"Yes," Nora said. "And you still yelled at board members, ignored counsel, and have years of documented anger."

"Some of which was distorted."

"Some."

That hurt.

Again because it was true.

Dante sat back.

"What do I do?"

"Stop trying to win every accusation," Nora said. "Start showing the court who you actually are."

Leo had been standing in the doorway.

Dante noticed him.

"How long have you been there?"

"Long enough."

Leo stepped inside.

"Did my recording help?"

Dante crossed the room and hugged him.

"It helped a lot."

Leo whispered into his jacket, "I thought I caused it."

Dante held him tighter.

"No. You revealed it."

Behind them, Reeves' phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

"What?"

Dante released Leo.

Reeves listened.

Then turned toward him.

"Sloane Mercer just requested an attorney."

"Good."

"She says she'll cooperate."

Dante felt the balance move again.

"Why?"

Reeves covered the phone.

"Because someone broke into her apartment last night."

Dante stared.

"Charles?"

"We don't know."

Reeves' expression sharpened.

"But she says the missing tablet wasn't there."

"Then where is it?"

Reeves listened to the phone again.

May you like

Then looked at Leo.

"Sloane says Celeste has it."
