Chapter 10 - What Claire Found

Daniel flew to Charleston with Rebecca while Noah remained in Miami with Grace and two licensed security officers.
He hated leaving him.
But Noah said, “Find what Mom found.”
The Mercer family estate smelled exactly as Daniel remembered: cedar, old paper and the faint salt of the nearby marsh.
The archive room had been destroyed.
Desk drawers lay open.
Files covered the floor.
A wall safe had been drilled.
Rebecca crouched beside it.
“They weren’t searching randomly.”
Daniel nodded.
“They knew where to look.”
The estate caretaker, Samuel Boone, was seventy-one and had worked for Robert Mercer.
He stood in the doorway looking ashamed.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Daniel.”
“When?”
“Three nights ago.”
“Any cameras?”
“Cut.”
“Alarm?”
“Disabled with a valid code.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who knew it?”
“You. Miss Elise. Your father.”
“My father is dead.”
Samuel hesitated.
“And Mrs. Claire.”
Daniel turned.
“Vanessa?”
“Not from me.”
Daniel looked through the mess.
Whoever had entered either knew an old code Claire had known or received it from someone with access to her records.
Rebecca searched one cabinet.
“Daniel.”
She held an empty folder.
The label read:
VALE — PERSONAL GUARANTEE — 2014.
“That’s it.”
Daniel stared at the empty folder.
Gone.
Samuel cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Claire didn’t trust folders.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“Near the end, she came here alone. She said if a document mattered enough to steal, the original shouldn’t stay where the label said.”
Daniel’s pulse increased.
“Where did she put it?”
Samuel shook his head.
“She never told me.”
They searched for four hours.
Nothing.
Daniel was ready to leave when he noticed an old framed photograph lying facedown.
Robert Mercer beside the company’s first cargo ship.
The glass was cracked.
Daniel lifted it.
Something was taped behind the backing.
A brass key.
Rebecca smiled faintly.
“Your wife knew you.”
Daniel examined the key.
Stamped into the metal were two numbers.
3-17.
Samuel stared.
“Boathouse.”
They crossed the property in heavy evening rain.
The old boathouse contained seventeen storage lockers.
Locker three was rusted shut.
Daniel used the key.
Inside was a weatherproof case.
Claire’s handwriting appeared on the lid.
DANIEL — READ EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU REACT.
Rebecca looked at him.
“She really knew you.”
Inside were photocopies, handwritten notes and a flash drive.
The first document was an agreement signed twelve years earlier by Robert Mercer and Warren Vale.
Robert had borrowed thirty million dollars privately from Vale during Mercer Maritime’s expansion.
In exchange, Vale received the right to purchase certain port assets if Robert defaulted.
But another handwritten amendment changed everything.
If control of Mercer Maritime passed outside Robert’s direct family line, Vale could demand immediate repayment plus accumulated penalties.
Daniel calculated silently.
“That could exceed eighty million now.”
Rebecca nodded.
“And create a liquidity crisis.”
Daniel turned to the next document.
Claire had written:
Julian Reed knows. I confronted him on February 14.
Daniel stared.
Julian had joined the company claiming he discovered Robert’s hidden debt after Robert died.
Claire’s notes showed otherwise.
Julian had been Warren Vale’s analyst before joining Mercer Maritime.
The employment history had been omitted from his résumé.
Rebecca whispered, “He was planted.”
Daniel inserted Claire’s flash drive into an offline laptop.
A video appeared.
Claire sat in the same boathouse.
Thin from chemotherapy.
Daniel gripped the table.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, then I was right about the danger and wrong about being able to stop it.”
His eyes burned.
Claire continued.
“Julian Reed is working for Warren Vale. I cannot prove how much the board knows. I also cannot prove whether Vale intends to force a sale or simply keep leverage.”
She coughed.
Then said something Daniel never expected.
“But Julian is not the person I fear most.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Claire looked frightened even through the years.
“The person helping him is already inside our family.”
The video ended.
No name.
No explanation.
Rebecca whispered, “Who was inside your family three years ago?”
Daniel stared at the black screen.
Vanessa had not yet married him then.
May you like
But she had already been there.
She had been Claire’s closest friend.
