Chapter 7 - Blood Loyalty

Daniel had not spoken to his younger sister, Elise Mercer, in six months.
She arrived at Rebecca’s office wearing a charcoal suit and carrying no handbag.
Daniel stood the moment she entered.
“You signed an affidavit against me?”
Elise shut the door.
“I signed what Vanessa’s lawyer gave me.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I thought you needed help.”
“With what?”
“Your temper.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So you told a court I’m dangerous around Noah?”
“I said you’ve become volatile.”
“When?”
“When you punched a wall after the Singapore deal collapsed.”
Daniel looked away.
That had happened.
Noah had not been present.
But it had happened.
Elise continued.
“You fired three executives in one month. You screamed at Julian in front of forty people.”
“He was stealing from us.”
“You didn’t know that then.”
“No. I knew something was wrong.”
Elise’s voice softened.
“Daniel, Vanessa told me you weren’t sleeping. She said you were mixing anxiety medication with alcohol.”
“I don’t take anxiety medication.”
Elise froze.
“What?”
“I’ve never been prescribed any.”
Her face changed.
“She showed me a bottle.”
Daniel and Rebecca exchanged a look.
“Whose name?” Rebecca asked.
“I didn’t read it.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You swore to a court that I abuse medication you never personally saw me take.”
Elise’s face reddened.
“I thought I was protecting Noah.”
“From me?”
“I thought Vanessa was frightened.”
Daniel stared at his sister.
“So was my son.”
Silence.
Elise sat down.
“What really happened?”
Daniel played the audio from Noah’s microSD.
By the end, Elise was crying.
“Oh God.”
Daniel did not comfort her.
Not yet.
She had helped Vanessa.
Consequences mattered even when betrayal came from fear instead of malice.
Elise wiped her eyes.
“I can fix this.”
“You can tell the truth.”
“I will.”
Rebecca said, “You’ll need your own lawyer before correcting the affidavit. A knowingly false sworn statement has consequences.”
Elise nodded.
“I understand.”
Daniel asked, “Why did Vanessa come to you?”
Elise hesitated.
“Because she knew I needed money.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“My restaurant group is failing.”
“You told me it was profitable.”
“I lied.”
“How much?”
“Six million.”
Daniel sat slowly.
Elise whispered, “Vanessa said Northgate would invest after the acquisition.”
There it was.
Another price.
Another weakness purchased.
“She bought you.”
Elise recoiled.
“She helped me.”
“She turned your debt into leverage.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Rebecca answered hers simultaneously.
Both calls were about the same thing.
The court had granted only a limited emergency order.
Vanessa did not receive custody.
But until a full hearing in seventy-two hours, Daniel was ordered not to remove Noah from Miami-Dade County, and Vanessa was entitled to one supervised visit if Noah’s physician approved.
Daniel was furious.
“She threatened him.”
Rebecca said, “Then document it properly and stop reacting like anger is evidence.”
He stared at her.
Again she was right.
Elise spoke quietly.
“I know something else.”
Daniel turned.
“Vanessa and Julian were sleeping together.”
The room went still.
“How do you know?”
“I saw them.”
“When?”
“Four months ago. At the Palm Beach house.”
Daniel felt humiliation rise beneath the anger.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Vanessa said you were separated privately.”
“We weren’t.”
“I know that now.”
Daniel walked to the window.
His wife.
His CFO.
His sister.
Each betrayal was connected by silence.
Elise said, “There’s a guesthouse camera.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“At Palm Beach. Dad installed it years ago.”
“Is it still recording?”
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca was already dialing the estate manager.
Twenty minutes later, they had an answer.
The camera had recorded Vanessa and Julian entering the guesthouse together repeatedly.
But the system retained only thirty days.
Daniel’s disappointment was immediate.
Then the manager added, “We do have one archived clip.”
“Why?”
“Mrs. Mercer asked me to delete it.”
Daniel went still.
“Vanessa?”
“Yes. I thought the request was strange, so I copied it first.”
Rebecca asked, “What does the clip show?”
May you like
The manager answered.
“Mrs. Mercer giving Mr. Reed a folder marked NOAH MERCER TRUST.”
