Chapter 16 - The Black Box

The forensic technician cut open the blue airplane in Daniel’s presence.

Noah had given permission.

“I want Dad there,” he had said.

Inside the hollow fuselage was a tiny metal capsule.

Not part of the toy.

Inside the capsule was a second microSD card.

Daniel stared.

“When did Julian put that there?”

Noah shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

The card contained hundreds of files.

Bank records.

Emails.

Recorded conversations.

Photographs.

Northgate payment schedules.

The original forged-trust templates.

Copies of Elliot Crane’s invoices.

Audio of Harold accepting money.

Audio of Melissa discussing credential theft.

And one folder labeled INSURANCE — WV.

Warren Vale.

Rebecca opened it.

The first file was a recording between Warren and Julian.

Warren said, “Once Daniel is removed, Vanessa votes his proxy and the trust gets frozen. We trigger Robert’s guarantee, force a liquidity event and buy the ports separately.”

Julian asked, “And Vanessa?”

“Disposable.”

Daniel felt no satisfaction.

Vanessa had betrayed him.

Vale planned to betray her.

The next file contained Warren’s instructions to move the $12.4 million through Daniel’s fake company.

Clear.

Explicit.

Devastating.

Rebecca immediately contacted federal investigators.

“This can collapse the conspiracy.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“What?”

“Warren will claim manipulation, missing context, hacked audio.”

“We have metadata.”

“He’ll still fight.”

“What are you suggesting?”

Daniel thought of Julian.

“If this is Julian’s insurance, he’ll want to trade it for protection.”

Rebecca understood.

“We find Julian.”

Federal agents already had a lead in Portugal.

But before they could move, Julian contacted Daniel directly.

One encrypted message.

I HAVE THE ORIGINALS. VALE WILL KILL THE DEAL AND BLAME VANESSA. MEET ME OR LOSE EVERYTHING.

Rebecca said, “You are not meeting him privately.”

“I know.”

Progress again.

They coordinated with federal authorities.

Julian demanded a meeting on the Aurelia.

The same yacht.

He believed maritime complexity would give him options.

The yacht was docked in Miami.

Federal agents agreed to controlled surveillance.

Daniel told Noah he would be staying with Elise.

Noah frowned.

“Are you going back to the boat?”

“Yes.”

“Is Vanessa?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She has information we need.”

Noah looked frightened.

“Don’t trust her.”

Daniel knelt.

“I don’t.”

“Then why bring her?”

“Because sometimes you can work with someone without trusting them.”

Noah considered that.

“Like a group project with someone bad?”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Exactly.”

Noah held out the damaged blue airplane.

Its fuselage had been carefully reassembled after the evidence was removed.

“You take it.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“So you remember.”

“Remember what?”

“To listen before you get mad.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Daniel took the plane.

“I will.”

That night, Daniel boarded the Aurelia with Vanessa, Rebecca and an undercover federal team hidden in crew areas.

Rain began again over Biscayne Bay.

Not as violent as the first storm.

But enough.

Vanessa stood in the medical-suite doorway.

She looked at the padded floor where she had forced Noah down.

“I still see him there.”

“You should.”

She flinched.

Daniel placed the blue airplane beside the bed.

Vanessa stared at it.

“He loved that thing.”

“He still does.”

A message arrived.

Julian was aboard.

No one had seen him enter.

Then the yacht’s internal lights flickered.

Daniel’s blood went cold.

Rebecca touched her concealed radio.

No response.

Vanessa whispered, “He knows.”

A speaker crackled overhead.

Julian’s voice filled the medical suite.

“Daniel, you never learn.”

The doors locked automatically.

The engines started.

Daniel rushed to the window.

The dock began moving away.

Julian had taken control of the yacht.

And this time, there was no child in the room to warn Daniel what came next.
