Chapter 8 - The Price of a Family

The Palm Beach footage did not prove an affair.
It proved something more useful.
Vanessa handed Julian a confidential trust file she had no authority to possess.
The date was five months earlier.
Daniel recognized the folder immediately.
It belonged in the locked cabinet of his home office.
“How did she get it?” Rebecca asked.
Daniel knew.
“I gave her the code.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Why?”
“She was my wife.”
No one answered.
Daniel was getting tired of hearing the same explanation leave his mouth.
Trust had become less like love and more like negligence.
Elise corrected her affidavit that afternoon.
Vanessa retaliated within an hour.
A financial newspaper published a story alleging Daniel was under investigation for misappropriating twelve point four million dollars from Mercer Maritime.
His photograph appeared beneath the headline.
MERCER CEO ACCUSED OF SECRET SELF-DEALING.
No charges had been filed.
That distinction vanished online.
By evening, lenders were calling.
Two clients paused contracts.
Mercer Maritime’s board scheduled an immediate special meeting.
Daniel joined remotely with Rebecca.
Vanessa appeared from the company’s executive conference room.
Julian’s seat was empty.
The chairman, Harold Beck, looked exhausted.
“Daniel, these allegations are destabilizing the company.”
“They were manufactured.”
Vanessa said, “That’s exactly what he keeps saying about anyone who questions him.”
Daniel muted himself before responding.
Rebecca nodded approval.
He unmuted.
“I have an audio recording involving Vanessa and Julian discussing the transfer.”
Vanessa leaned toward the camera.
“A recording made by a seven-year-old recovering from surgery.”
“Noah found the recorder. He did not make the conversation happen.”
Harold said, “Our counsel needs the original device.”
“The original was taken during a deliberately induced blackout.”
Vanessa shook her head sadly.
“Do you hear how this sounds?”
Daniel wanted to reach through the screen.
Instead he said, “Yes. It sounds like someone planned very carefully.”
A director asked, “Do you have evidence the blackout was deliberate?”
Rebecca answered.
“The yacht’s logs show the medical circuit was manually isolated thirty-four seconds before the main generator fault.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Barely.
But Daniel saw it.
Harold saw it too.
“Who initiated the isolation?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“This company cannot be governed through domestic accusations.”
“No,” Daniel said. “It’s currently being governed through fraud.”
The board voted.
Daniel remained suspended.
But Vanessa was stripped of authority to negotiate the Northgate sale pending an independent investigation.
Five votes to four.
A power reversal.
Small.
Temporary.
But real.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
After the call, Daniel returned home.
Noah was sitting at the kitchen table drawing airplanes with Grace.
Daniel knelt beside him.
“How are you feeling?”
“Better.”
“Pain?”
“Two.”
Grace smiled.
“That’s an improvement.”
Noah looked at Daniel.
“Is Vanessa still your wife?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Legally, yes.”
“Do you still love her?”
The question hurt more than the board vote.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
Noah considered that.
Then he pushed a drawing toward Daniel.
It showed three people beside a blue airplane.
No Vanessa.
One figure was labeled MOM.
Daniel swallowed.
“Why did you draw Mom?”
“Because the airplane was hers first.”
Daniel frowned.
“No. I bought it for you.”
Noah shook his head.
“She picked it.”
Daniel remembered the airport gift shop.
Claire had been sitting in a wheelchair near the gate.
She had pointed at the little blue plane.
“That one,” she had said.
Daniel had forgotten.
Noah had not.
Grace’s phone buzzed.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She showed Daniel a message.
Unknown sender.
STOP HELPING HIM.
Below it was a photograph of Grace entering Daniel’s house fifteen minutes earlier.
Taken from across the street.
Daniel went to the window.
A dark SUV pulled away.
He called security.
Then Noah whispered, “Dad?”
Daniel turned.
The boy was staring at Grace’s screen.
“That car was at the hospital.”
Daniel crouched.
“What hospital?”
“In Nassau.”
“You saw it?”
Noah nodded.
May you like
“And Mr. Reed got inside.”
The conspiracy had followed them across an ocean.
