Chapter 17 - The Man in the Control Room

The Aurelia moved into the channel under remote engine control.

Daniel pulled the medical-suite emergency release.

Nothing.

Julian’s voice returned.

“You brought law enforcement. Predictable.”

Rebecca checked her dead radio.

“He jammed internal frequencies.”

Vanessa whispered, “He installed private maintenance access years ago.”

Daniel turned.

“You knew?”

“I knew he had access. I didn’t know this much.”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Satellite emergency beacon?”

“Bridge controlled.”

Julian laughed over the speaker.

“You’re all still thinking the yacht is the prize.”

Daniel walked toward the wall panel.

“What do you want?”

“The black-box card.”

“Federal agents have copies.”

“No. They have files. I want the physical card.”

“Why?”

“Because it proves chain of possession.”

Rebecca whispered, “He’s partly right.”

Julian continued.

“Give me the card and Vanessa’s original proxy packet.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You still have it?”

She shook her head.

Then stopped.

Julian laughed.

“She lies reflexively, doesn’t she?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“It’s in my attorney’s safe.”

“Wrong,” Julian said. “You moved it yesterday.”

Daniel stared.

Vanessa whispered, “Bank box.”

Julian knew.

He had been watching all of them.

Daniel looked at the blue airplane.

The evidence card was no longer inside it.

But Julian did not know that.

Daniel picked up the toy.

“I have the card.”

Rebecca stared at him.

Julian said, “Bring it to the bridge.”

“Unlock the door.”

“One person.”

Daniel glanced at Rebecca.

She shook her head.

He said, “Vanessa comes too.”

Julian was silent.

Daniel continued.

“You don’t trust her. Neither do I. That makes her useful.”

The lock clicked.

Daniel and Vanessa entered the corridor.

He carried the airplane.

“Do you have a plan?” she whispered.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Not getting angry.”

She almost laughed.

The bridge was dark except for instrument lights.

Julian stood near the helm holding no visible weapon.

Two hired security contractors flanked him.

Daniel recognized one from the SUV.

Julian smiled.

“You look terrible.”

“You look unemployed.”

Julian’s smile vanished.

Daniel placed the airplane on the navigation console.

“Stop the engines.”

“Card first.”

“The card is inside.”

Julian reached for it.

Daniel put his hand over the toy.

“Vale abandoned you.”

Julian froze.

“We heard the recording.”

“He’ll deny it.”

“You kept evidence because you knew he would.”

Julian’s eyes flickered.

Daniel continued.

“He used you. He used Vanessa. He used Harold. He’ll let you take every charge.”

Julian looked at Vanessa.

She said, “He’s right.”

“You don’t get to speak.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

Julian said, “You ruined everything when you let the boy hear us.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“No. You ruined it when you decided a child was leverage.”

Daniel felt rage surge.

Noah.

The floor.

The threat.

His fists tightened.

Then he saw the blue airplane.

Listen before you get mad.

Daniel forced himself still.

“Julian,” he said, “federal prosecutors will make a distinction between the architect and the cooperating witness.”

Rebecca had coached him on the language.

“You have originals Vale wants destroyed.”

Julian’s eyes changed.

Daniel knew he was listening.

“Stop the yacht. Preserve the servers. Walk off with your hands visible.”

One contractor shifted.

Julian snapped, “Stay where you are.”

That told Daniel something.

Julian was losing control of his own men.

Daniel continued.

“Warren paid you. But he paid them too, didn’t he?”

The contractor looked at Julian.

Julian went pale.

Vanessa whispered, “He was always going to replace you.”

A distant siren sounded over the water.

Coast Guard.

Federal agents had restored an external distress signal from a hidden transponder Julian had missed.

Julian lunged for the airplane.

Daniel stepped back.

One contractor grabbed Julian instead.

“Deal’s over.”

The bridge erupted in shouting.

No gunfire.

No heroic fight.

Just men realizing prison was closer than money.

Julian struggled.

“Get off me!”

Daniel did not touch him.

That mattered.

Minutes later Coast Guard officers boarded.

Julian was handcuffed.

As he passed Daniel, he smiled strangely.

“You think Vale loses because of recordings?”

Daniel said nothing.

Julian leaned closer.

“He owns the debt.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Even with the conspiracy exposed, Robert Mercer’s old guarantee still existed.

May you like

Vale could lose the criminal scheme and still destroy the company legally.

The final battle had moved from crime to ownership.
