Chapter 11 - Before the Marriage

Daniel met Vanessa through Claire.

That memory had always felt beautiful.

Now it felt contaminated.

Vanessa Lane had been a strategic consultant hired to advise Mercer Maritime’s charitable foundation.

Claire liked her.

Trusted her.

Invited her to dinners.

When Claire became ill, Vanessa organized appointments, charity events and meals.

After Claire died, Vanessa stayed close to Daniel and Noah.

Eighteen months later, Daniel married her.

He had told himself Claire would have approved.

Now he sat in Claire’s boathouse staring at records proving Vanessa had exchanged emails with Julian before Claire’s death.

Rebecca read one aloud.

“February 16. Vanessa to Julian: ‘C is asking questions. Stop using company email.’”

Daniel felt sick.

C.

Claire.

Another email.

Julian to Vanessa: “Vale says contain it. No more discussions with her.”

Vanessa replied: “I’ll handle Claire.”

Daniel shut the laptop.

Rebecca studied him.

“Don’t assume more than the evidence proves.”

“I know.”

“You’re thinking she harmed Claire.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Claire had terminal cancer.”

“I know.”

“There is no evidence Vanessa caused her death.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t create a murder theory because betrayal hurts.”

Daniel exhaled.

Rebecca had become the person repeatedly stopping him from destroying his own case.

“What does ‘handle Claire’ mean?”

“We find out.”

Back in Miami, Grace called.

Vanessa had arrived for the supervised visit.

Noah refused to see her.

The court-appointed supervisor documented the refusal.

Vanessa asked to speak to Daniel.

Rebecca advised him to record the call.

Vanessa’s face appeared on video.

She looked tired for the first time.

“You went to Charleston.”

Daniel said nothing.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You found something.”

“Why were you emailing Julian while Claire was alive?”

For once Vanessa had no immediate answer.

Daniel watched the silence.

“You knew he worked for Vale.”

“Yes.”

The admission stunned him.

“Why?”

“Because I was working with him.”

Noah, in another room, could not hear.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Against Claire?”

“At first? Against your father’s mess.”

“My father was already dead.”

“His damage wasn’t.”

“Claire discovered the guarantee.”

“So did I.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Because you were barely functioning while your wife was dying.”

“Don’t use Claire to excuse this.”

“You want truth? Fine. Claire asked me to investigate Julian.”

Daniel froze.

Rebecca’s pen stopped.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew I had contacts in private equity. She asked me to get close to him.”

“Then why are there emails saying you would ‘handle’ her?”

“Because Julian believed I was on his side.”

Daniel wanted to reject it.

But Claire’s video had not named Vanessa.

Maybe there was a reason.

“Prove it.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Now you sound like me.”

“Prove it.”

She looked toward the supervised-visitation office.

“Claire kept a second record.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you to realize Claire trusted nobody completely. Including me.”

Daniel said, “You married me.”

“Yes.”

“You slept with Julian.”

Vanessa’s expression shifted.

“So Elise told you.”

“Is it true?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

The word landed quietly.

Daniel expected rage.

Instead he felt exhausted.

“How long?”

“Seven months.”

“Why?”

“At first for information.”

“And later?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Later because I hated you.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“Because you never married me. You married someone to stand in Claire’s empty space.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“So you stole twelve million dollars?”

“No.”

“You forged my proxy?”

“I changed the packet.”

That was an admission.

Rebecca wrote furiously.

Daniel said, “Why?”

“To stop Vale.”

He almost laughed.

“By giving yourself my vote?”

“Yes.”

“By trying to control Noah’s trust?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with something that looked like frustration.

“Because your board has a traitor you still haven’t found.”

Daniel went still.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Convenient.”

“Julian wouldn’t tell me.”

“You were sleeping with him.”

“He didn’t trust me either.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Then why attack Noah?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I didn’t attack him.”

“He says you forced him to the floor.”

“He had the recorder.”

“That is not an answer.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I needed that card before Julian knew Noah had it.”

Daniel stared.

“You frightened my son to protect him?”

“I panicked.”

“That’s what abusers call losing control.”

She flinched.

Good.

He wanted her to.

Then she whispered, “Daniel, the twelve million wasn’t the real theft.”

“What was?”

May you like

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“Someone has already pledged Noah’s trust shares as collateral.”
