Chapter 12 - The Missing Signature

Martin confirmed it two hours later.

A financing statement had been filed against a holding entity that indirectly referenced Noah’s trust assets.

It should have been impossible.

The trust prohibited pledging principal shares.

Daniel asked, “How does someone create a lien against property they don’t control?”

Martin replied, “Fraudulently.”

“Whose signature?”

“Mine.”

Martin looked furious.

“It’s forged.”

Rebecca added, “And yours.”

Daniel read the document.

His name appeared as trustee.

Martin’s as trust protector.

Both false.

The lender was a Northgate affiliate.

Vanessa sat across the conference table under an agreement negotiated by her criminal-defense attorney.

She had not received immunity.

She had agreed to provide information.

Daniel hated having her there.

But she knew Julian.

“You knew about this?” he asked.

“I knew he wanted the trust shares tied up.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was trying to get proof.”

“You keep calling secrecy strategy.”

Vanessa stared back.

“And you keep calling anger leadership.”

Rebecca intervened.

“Enough.”

Martin examined the filing.

“The notarization is the weak point.”

The notary was listed as Patricia Voss, a Florida mobile notary.

Rebecca’s investigator found her address.

They met her that evening.

Patricia was sixty-three and terrified.

“I never notarized that.”

She examined the document.

“That’s my stamp number, but not my signature.”

“Was your stamp stolen?” Rebecca asked.

Patricia looked down.

“Borrowed.”

“By whom?”

“My daughter.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Who is your daughter?”

“Lena Voss.”

Vanessa whispered, “Julian’s assistant.”

The chain was closing.

Patricia agreed to cooperate.

Lena did too—after federal investigators contacted her attorney.

She had copied Patricia’s stamp six months earlier.

Julian told her it was for urgent corporate documents.

“Did you know the signatures were false?” Rebecca asked.

“Not at first.”

“And later?”

Lena cried.

“Yes.”

“Why continue?”

“He had messages.”

“What messages?”

“About me and him.”

Vanessa looked sharply at her.

Daniel understood.

Julian had been sleeping with Lena too.

The room filled with a strange, ugly silence.

Lena wiped her face.

“He recorded us without telling me. He said he’d send everything to my fiancé.”

Daniel felt no satisfaction.

Only disgust.

Julian did not build loyalty.

He built leverage.

“What else did he make you do?” Daniel asked.

“I copied board packets. Password resets. Access cards.”

“Did you shut down the yacht medical circuit?”

Lena shook her head.

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

Lena said, “But Julian told me Mrs. Mercer would handle the yacht.”

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

She did not deny it.

“I requested a maintenance interruption,” she said. “Not the medical circuit.”

“Using my digital credentials?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“You just admitted unauthorized computer access.”

Vanessa’s lawyer touched her arm.

She stopped speaking.

Daniel stood.

“I’m done.”

Rebecca followed him into the hall.

“Where are you going?”

“To see Noah.”

“Good.”

He stopped.

“No. First I’m confronting Harold Beck.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Lena copied board packets. Somebody on the board fed Julian information.”

“You don’t know it was Harold.”

“He pushed hardest to suspend me.”

“That isn’t proof.”

Daniel’s temper broke.

“Everyone keeps telling me what isn’t proof while my son is being hunted and my company is being stolen!”

People turned in the corridor.

Rebecca waited.

Daniel heard himself.

Too loud.

Too angry.

Again.

He closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“Your rage is becoming part of their evidence.”

“I know.”

“Then learn.”

His phone buzzed.

A message from Harold Beck.

We need to meet privately. I know who helped Julian.

Daniel stared.

Rebecca read it.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“Where?”

“His house.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Public place.”

Daniel typed back.

Twenty minutes later Harold agreed to meet at a hotel restaurant.

Daniel arrived at eight.

Harold never came.

At eight seventeen, police vehicles screamed past the hotel.

At eight twenty-three, Rebecca’s investigator called.

Harold Beck had been found unconscious in his home office after an apparent assault.

And Daniel’s angry voicemail from the previous night had already been given to police.
